Too Expensive, Service Contract Not Worth It 9/8/2011

We have used Blind and Sons for a few years for various electrical and plumbing needs. Overall we were satisfied with the service, to the point where we agreed to a $15/month service contract which was supposed to give us preference and better pricing. Last week our water heater (previously installed by them 5 years ago) sprang a leak. We called at 7 AM to have a tech come, considering they claim "24/7 service". Instead I was told they would come out "sometime that day" to look for it. When the tech arrived, he confirmed what we already suspected - we needed a new water heater. The first time they put one in, it was $587. This time they quoted us a price of $1,035, and that was AFTER a 10% service plan discount. To top it off, they were going to replace it with the exact same type of heater that was there before - a middling quality Bradford White. I called around to other places, including Sears and the Home Depot. To a company, they quoted me prices between $200-$300 cheaper than what Blind & Sons wanted to charge us. Thankfully I was able to cancel the appointment, and the next day Home Depot installed a high-efficiency GE water heater for $775. Suffice to say, we have canceled our service contract. Even with the savings, Blind & Sons is just too expensive by far. They're not the only game in town and need to stop charging like they are. more
