Wow read on . . . . . 12/11/2008

To those that have not had the opportunity to experience the sushi experience, this isn't the place to start. I was extremely overwhelmed at how bitter and sour the fish tasted. Their excuse - we had a busy lunch and this is what was left. A real sushi experience is seeing before buying, no sushi bar here folks just an extremely overpriced menu. I can't believe their prices were on par with Nobu in Beverly Hills, Ca. Wow, what a terrible experience. Stay away! Pros: Location Cons: Food is terrible and sour. more

Very low quality sushi, expensive 5/20/2008

Expensive (probably most expensive sushi in SA) and sorely lacking in quality. The fish was sub-par. Even the rice was dry and stale--not moist and fresh. Service was good, if a bit unfriendly. But the quality was certainly below average. We won't be returning. Pros: Good location across from Majestic Theatre Cons: Low quality sushi, stale rice, expensive more

My worst sushi experience ever 1/23/2008

I have dined at over 50 sushi restaurants all over the world. I can confidently say that my experience at Yokonyu was the worst. The first thing I noticed was the music . They were playing some sort of latin techno, not creating the ambiance expected at a sushi restaurant. Second of all I was astonished at the prices. $10 for a bowl of miso, $15 roles, $7 bottle of water. This place makes the award winning Uchi in austin look cheap. When I ordered a $10 glass of saki (which other nicer sushi restaurants charge $12 for a bottle of the exact same saki!!) and a glass of water the waiter made a comment about it being tap water.. of course. Still, none of this was a big deal. When the sushi arrived I was surprised how thin the fish was cut. The waiter brought a bottle of sauce I mixed it with the wasabi and started eating the sushi. I was shocked at how sour it was. I went on to a second piece and the same thing sour. On the third piece I questioned the waIter and he told me he would ask the sushi chef. It turns out that he had served some lemon juice mixture for what I thought was soy sauce. He said it had a latin flair. Whatever the case.. it ruined my sushi and left a disgusting taste in my mouth. Why in the world would you serve this with sushi.. not option of soy sauce.. unless requested.. and not warn the customers. I was also surprised that the waiter did not offer to replace the sushi this sauce spoiled. I paid my bill and left to order pizza. Very disappointing establishment!! Cons: music, food, price more

Overpriced, not worth it 9/19/2007

The sushi was average, at best. I did not see one Japanese person behind the sushi bar. We are big sushi lovers and this was a sad attempt at Japanese flavor. The rolls were very overpriced and basically all filled with cream cheese, fried, and hardly any had raw fish and were priced around $14 and up! The nigiri was again very expensive, averaging $8 for two pieces. Our cold unfiltered sake was average, but again overpriced knowing what I'd pay for it at an asian grocery store. The wait staff was not very professional Not really worth it! Pros: downtown, near the riverwalk Cons: expensive, not a good variety of rolls, not a single Japanese sushi chef! more

A nice change 1/12/2007

My husband is obcessed with this place and its rock shrimp and kosimo roll. Both of those were ok to me. However i had a fish that was cooked in foil with garlic, spinach and lots of other good stuff and it was delicious. Very different! The server was hanging around like a fly but a nice guy anyway! Pros: interesting fish dishes, prompt seating Cons: boring decor, a little over priced more

TOO GOOD FOR SA! 1/12/2007

The service is impecable and the rolls are so unique that you cannot eat anywhere else to get the same flavor. Most of all, THEIR SAUCES ARE HOMEMADE AND AMAZING!!!! I literally would pay them to get the recipes! Pros: Unique rolls, everything is homemade-literally Cons: prices for little fish servings more

Sushi - Latino 10/28/2006

If you want authentic japanese sushi, this is not the place. If you want to try something new, a latino-flavored japanese-fusion, then go... Pros: Latino-friendly maki-rolls. Cons: A little on the expensive side. more

Best Sushi in San Antonio 9/27/2006

Yokonyu Sushi Bar and Restaurant is by far the best shushi in San Antonio. Not only is conveniently located in downtown San Antonio, but it offers excellent quality food, great customer service, and a great atmosphere. The place is hip and modern with eclectic music, and a bar area. The flavors are unique, they have their own sauces with a hint of latin flavors. I truly recommend Yokonyu Sushi for a great dining experience! Pros: Sushi Rolls are Great! Cons: A little pricey more
