Best

One of my favorite restaurants for Greek food in town. The food is always excellent and there is lots of parking (just follow the signs). My favorite is the Keftedes, herb rice an...

Worst

Unless you like greasy food and a noisy ambiance, I would avoid this restaurant. Personally, I do not like either.

For a Pappas, they serve really good greek food. 6/12/2007

not recommened 5/7/2007

I was never so humiliated in my life, the waiter did not come back. I felt like crying. Finally the manager came over. I have never experienced such rascism in my life. The food was horrible also. more

Greek Food... Not so much... 12/4/2006

Just because you put Feta and Hummus on the menu does not qualify the restaurant as Greek! Now I am usually one to give credit where credit is due, but the food was waaaaayyyyyy overpriced, and the menu lacked interests. Pros: Facility looked nice and clean Cons: The price of menu items guaranteed a 20.00 minimum purchase. more

great greek 11/17/2006

really good greek food although i would question just how authentic the menu really is. anyway, the octopus appetizer is excellent....especially if you like lemon. the osso buco-style lamb shank over the orzo pasta is my favorite. family-style and comfortable place. more

Love yia yia's 5/2/2006

I have been going to Yia Yia's for a couple of years now...I discovered this place after going to Niko Niko's for a while...and became tired of the crowds there. Yia Yia's offers a good happy hour experience (for those of us who like a quiet atmosphere for happy hour) and great food. I've tried just about everything on the menu and love everything. The moussaka and gyros are great. Pros: good food, quick service, inexpensive Cons: crowded sometimes more

May go back again 3/15/2006

My co-worker and I went there for lunch and both really enjoyed the Rotisserie Lamb Gyro. The meat was tender, juicy, and flavorful. I don't know how authetic this place is. The main dining room is large and spacious but way too loud. What I do not like is having to order yourself upfront but then later they provide you with a waiter. Why not just do one or the other? Although our waiter was extremely pleasant and prompt, is there really a need for such a role? Pros: Rotisseris Lamb Gyro Cons: loud atmosphere, uneeded wait staff more

If you like flavor - don't try it. 2/27/2006

Sorry excuse for Greek cuisine. TERRIBLE! That's really all I can say . . . more

Not up to the Pappa's standard 8/31/2005

The Gyro's are good, but it is not Pappa's quality. At least not what most of us have grown accustomed to. The greek salad is okay and the baklava is not very good at all. Overall average. Pros: Gyro Cons: Baklava more

Not that Greek 8/18/2005

If you're looking for a gyro and fries then this place is pretty good; if you're looking for a good Greek salad then keep looking. The Greek salads at Pappas' Greek restaurant are surprisingly bad and NOTHING like the Greek salads served at other Pappas restaurants. I've also had exceptionally slow service here more than once. Pros: good gyros Cons: slow service more

Great Food and Service 7/22/2005

I first went to this restuarant about 6 months ago. I ended up just getting the Hummus, and had that as my meal. Their Hummus is so so yummy! I also really love the Gyros! Their prices are great, and the wait staff is very attentive and friendly. more

Two Words: Baked Feta 4/27/2005

I am hooked on Yia Yia Mary's appetizers. My girlfriends love to go for happy hour and get excellent appetizers, great service and good drinks. Among our favorites is the baked feta (a block of feta cheese baked until golden and bubbly, covered with fresh marinara and served with pita bread triangles)and the jumbo shrimp. You have to try the appetizers and wash them down with their freshly made Sangria. Pros: Happy hour,, appetizer specials,, great bartenders more

Good Greek 4/12/2005

I rarely get excited about pita bread, but they do something different that tastes great. The pita is especially good with the appetizer plate -- a combination of about 5 different dips, especially the taramasalata, a wonderful caviar dip. The grilled meats are quite good too, especially with the feta. I was a little disappointed with the greek salad -- too much iceberg lettuce with an unappetizing wedge of cold feta and a so so dressing. Although the food is very good, don't go for the ambiance. The dining room is huge, loud, and chaotic. The restaurant makes more money that way. more

Good Greek, for a good price 3/24/2005

The restaurant is a big, airy space. The menu is very simple, with several Meze's, and then the typical Souvlaki and Gyros. They also had some seafood specialities. We had Hummus to begin, which was very good (but hummus always is!) but a little bland. The Pita was excellent. I followed with chicken and beef souvlaki plate, my wife had a Gyro. The gyro was delicious and salty, with a nice tangy tzatziki sauce. My souvlaki was very flavorful, and had a nice charred outside. It came with lemony roasted potatoes and a small greek salad. The potatoes were very intersesting and had a nice flavor. The service was prompt and well trained and we had no complaints The worst thing about the restaurant was the smoke from the bar. When is Houston going to join the modern world and ban smoking in restaurants and bars? Pros: good location, good food, inexpensive Cons: smoky more

Loved It! 7/7/2004

I've been to Yia Yia's 3 times now and have been pleased every time. I think the food is great, especially the tasty Mousaka (the best I've had in the US since tasting it for the first time on a visit to Athens...and I've ordered it a lot of places) and the delicious Feta and Roasted Red Pepper dip. I can't comment on it being more or less authentic in taste to Niko Niko's...because every time I try to go to Niko Niko's it is so crowded I can't get a table! However, in it's own right I think Yia Yia's is a great place. It gets a bity noisy at times and service could be faster overall, but the value for your money and taste will keep me going back. Pros: Food, Inexpensive more

Average 6/26/2004

We have been twice. The first time was better than the second. Service was slow both times, but waitstaff was pleasant enough. Last night there was ""something"" wrong in the kitchen. About an hour after ordering, we were told one of the items wasn't available that evening. A half hour after that we got our food. The manager did comp the meal- which was a nice gesture. We'll go one more time to see. The Spanakopita is delicious- as well as the Keftades (sp?). We still need to try the gyros before making a final decision on the restaurant. Pros: taste, atmosphere Cons: , inconsistant more

Big Pappas Disappointment 6/13/2004

If you like Pappasito's, Pappadeux, Pappas Brother's Steak House or C&H, you'll be sorely disappointed with the newest edition to the Pappas family or restaurants. If you're expecting the highest Pappa's standards in service, you won't find them at Yia Yia Mary's. Plus, the quality of the food was only average and the noise level was unnecessarily high. Cons: , poor parking, poor value more

Nice Environment, 'Average' Food 5/17/2004

I actually have been in Yia Yia Mary's several times with friends and I did enjoy my dinner. But being from Greece, I can definitely say that there is a great dissimilarity in the recipees. I think that Niko Niko's menu is much tastier, original Greek cooking. more

Great Greek 3/24/2004

This place is EXCELENT!!! I have taken several people here since it opened and EVERYONE has said Yia Yia Mary's has the BEST hummus ever tasted. We go there at least once a week. I have been to several restaurants around town the serve greek, middle eastern, etc. and Mary's, bar none, has the best hummus & beef/chicken kabbobs. Everyone I have taken has recommended this place to others. The price is average compaired to other restaurants in the Galleria area and you get a good amount of food for the price. Service is fast and courteous. The place is always packed (lunch & dinner). If it wasn't great it wouldn't be packed! I still haven't gotten used to the ordering/paying system they have though. Pros: Great Hummus Cons: , Parking more

Yummy! 2/15/2004

I can't speak for the Giros because I have not yet tried them, but if they are anything like the Souvlakis, they have to be wonderful! I have tried both the chicken and beef souvlakis, and they were both delicious! The beef is on the rare side, so if you only like charred beef, not the place for you. Very tasty! Also, try the Saganaki appetizer---Greek cheese flames tableside and served with scrumptious fresh Pita bread! Very cool to see and absolutely satisfying to eat! Service is so-so, but the food was wonderful! A little pricey, but it is a Pappas restaurant! Pros: Food, Location more
