I usually give restaurants with a rating over 8 a chance, but found Virgil's to be a big disappointment. The crab cakes still had shell in it, cocktails were way too sweet, the si...

Yeeeeeee Haw! 11/6/2002

Virgil's came very highly recommended to me from a family member that frequents Virgil's at least 2 x a month. So I figured why not try it. I was in Times Square on my way to a party at Club Babalu's and I figured stopping at Virgil's to eat first would make sense. I ordered the Beef Brisket and my friend ordered the ribs and the chicken combo ( I wound up eating some of her chicken). The food was great. My side orders cheese grits and collard greens were unbelievable. You have to try the drinks; the Junebug and the Cremesicle. Virgil's is a must sit, stop and eat spot. The service was excellent, the restaurant is clean and has a trendy southern decor. This was one of the best eating experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. You've gotta go the soul food here is authentic! Pros: Good Drinks, Great Tasting Food, Fun atmosphere Cons: Brisket portion small, Collard greens small more

Tourist crap! 11/1/2002

The service was terrible. You can get better food from the deli buffet. more

spiritual wings 10/26/2002

Virgils Wings are an amazing start - they will make you long form more and stay in your mind for a very long time. The dry rub ribs are know by my friend and me as ""spiritual ribs"" Definately get the hush puppies to start - just plain awesome! Pros: crowded, food, bartenders Cons: crowded, no reservations, bar is too small more

Virgil's BBQ is top o' the line. 10/26/2002

Lunch was reasonably priced (for NYC), friendly atmosphere, good food, and close to the theater district. more

NY winner 10/26/2002

One of our favorites in mid-town Manhattan for reasonably priced good food. Always crowded which tells you a lot. more

Never order out from this place 10/25/2002

Virgils has great food, but uses ""less than capable"" people to handle deliveries. Do not use these guys for delivering food to customers...it's painful and scary....will the food ever get there...and is it the right amount?"" Who needs that? They could not even suggest the correct amount of Ribs and Chicken for any given size party. If you are near the place and want to eat there, fine....don't have food delivered. Pros: Great Food, Convenient to Midtown Cons: Terrible phone servic, terrible delivery ser more

BBQ'S SHAMES ALL THE REST 10/18/2002

I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO GO AND EAT WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS AFTER WORK FOR A FEW DRINKS OR IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHEAP PLACE TO GO AND EAT BEFORE OR AFTER A MOVIE WHILE ON A DATE ON OF NEW TORKS BEST KEPT SECRETS IT PUTS THE REST TO SHAME more

I ACTUALLY LICKED MY FINGERS 10/3/2002

This has to be one of the best BAR-B-QUE's in the city. The staff was curteous and friendly. The service was prompt. The food was very good. They have a variety of hot sauces to try.....but fair warning...the SCORNED WOMAN is not for the faint of heart. A little pricey but don't let that deter you. I can't wait to go back. Pros: service, atmosphere, selection Cons: prices more

BEST BBQ IN NYC, HANDS DOWN! 10/3/2002

This is simply put, the best barbeque in the city. The food is fantastic, the waiters are friendly, they have a great beer and wine selection, and they can accomodate a large group. The ribs are phenomenal. But don't skip the amazing appetizers (hush puppies and biscuits and gravy are MUSTS!), and save room for dessert! Pros: GREAT FOOD, GOOD SERVICE, BEER SELECTION Cons: a little hokie more

Best in NYC! 9/21/2002

BBQ wings to die for! Richest, thickest, tastiest Bleu Cheese I've ever had. Lively atmosphere smack in Broadway! Catch a show and stop by Virgil's. It's the best BBQ I've had! Great place for family, friends, fun! Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Expensive, Crowded more

Too bad you can't order the PR machine 9/19/2002

We had a very disappointing visit to Virgil's. The last time we visited, 2 years ago, we swore we would never return. Being in a forgiving mood, we did and lived to regret it. Our waiter was too busy trying to sweet talk a table of young women to provide adequate service to a table of middle-agers. It took 20 minutes before he approached the table- despite our expectant looks- and another 20 before the drinks were delivered. After the food was tossed onto the table, we didn't see him again. Not surprisingly, the bill was promptly delivered when summoned. A complaint to the manager fell on deaf ears. The barbeque was mediocre and made less palatable by the lack of service. Take your chances with this place. more

There's a reason it's packed 9/18/2002

and it isn't just tourists. The ribs just fall off, the sauces are great, and the corn bread kills. Great beer selection. And the split, grilled flat dogs make a perfect lunch meal. Why would anyone boil hot dogs?????? Even the bar service is reasonably quick and very friendly. Pros: Variety, beer on tap Cons: Crowds more

Terrific--you must go! 9/16/2002

Awesome BBQ. We had reservations at 8, but it was raining so we went early and were seated right away. Very crowded, but who would expect less in the middle of Times Sqare. Food was amazing in my opinion! more

Ummmm, Ummmm, Good 9/6/2002

The best ribs, cornbread, potato salad & greens that I've ever had in a restaurant. I've recommended Virgi's to everyone I know and will continue to do so. Pros: Delicious, Good value, Great service Cons: Crowded, Filthy bathroom more

Abita beer 9/3/2002

Good BBQ, And real good hot suace. This is also one of the few places where they have Abita beer. Pros: good bbq Cons: crowds more

Finger Lickin Good! 8/30/2002

This is one of the best BBQ places I've been to in NY so far. There's one on 8th Street that's good too. We had a great seat on the second floor in a semi booth by the window that was the best seat in the house. We had BBQ hotdogs that were absolutely too delicious! The wait when we went (tuesday night) was 30-40mins but it was worth it! I would definately recommend to anyone. more

Best Pulled Pork in NYC 8/29/2002

Wow! We love this place. After seeing that it was voted Best Barbecue on Citysearch, we checked it out and it's definately the best. We're from Texas and miss the barbecue there. At Virgil's we tried the ribs, the pulled pork and the chicken barbecue sandwhich, all were fantastic! We love this place ans it's right near the theaters. Pros: Ribs, Pulled Pork, Hot Sauce more

Hog Heaven!!! 8/23/2002

Dust off your County Fair bib, and a pair of trousers with an elastic waistband--cuz your gonna need em'. The food isn't what you'd call dainty, but it sure is delicious. From the Chicken Fried Steak--yes, lovers of all things chicken fired--to the Brisket Po' Boy, you will not be dissappointed. I have been there three times now and have licked my fingers clean every time. The decor is perhaps the most entertaing part of the Virgils experience. The place is a vertibale shrine to all things BBQ, including a map of the best BBQ's in the US which make a killer road-trip--figuratively, if not literally. Prompt and entertaining service, coupled with a respectable beer selection make this BBQ pit a real Hog Heaven!!! Pros: County Fair Decor, Chicken Fried _______, Potato salad and slaw Cons: Bloated walk home more

Wings Wings Wings 8/20/2002

There are a few hits and a couple of misses at Virgils but the barbeque wings are an all-time classic that can't be missed. The pulled pork and brisket are also excellent and I usually order the pulled pork sandwich with mustard slaw. The ribs are on the dry side -- personally, not to my taste -- but others may feel differently. There are a number of other dishes on the menu including chicken and fish, but in my humble opinion they have nothing to do with barbeque and (with the exception of trying them once) I've always avoided them. The sides are all very good as is the corn bread. Try the wings! Pros: Wings, Wings, Wings Cons: Pre-theatre crowds more

overcooked 8/20/2002

I like this place, but the last time I went the ribs were overcooked. It's the kind of thing that would happen when a place gets so successful they can't prepare the ribs using the time and care they need. Still a good place, and you have to try the hush puppies more
