I usually give restaurants with a rating over 8 a chance, but found Virgil's to be a big disappointment. The crab cakes still had shell in it, cocktails were way too sweet, the si...

GRAND SLAM BBQ'S---CITY'S BEST! 6/14/2008

My boyfriend and I decidedto take my bestfriend advice and visit this restuarant on friday and we were highly impressedwith the food as well as service.. ok..let me start out the the homemade biscuits & maple butter..OMG...THEN WE HAD THE BBQ WINGS.....I MEAN THE MEAT WAS FALLING OFF THE WINGS....we ordered something called the ""pig out"" .. which has ribs, lamb, beef brisket, chicken all on the same plate.....we couldnt even finish all....this restuarant surely knows how to bbq....even desert was great! Pros: food & service was great Cons: if your looking for a romantic amposhere....this is not it...more like a loud hang out spot more

Great way to kick off the unofficial start to summer! 5/23/2008

Two words--TRAINWRECK FRIES! They are so amazingly delicious that my best friend and I had to make it something we only eat before Memorial Day and Labor Day. The BBQ is not as good as other places, but with fries like that...who needs smoked meat?\r more

These other reviewers are crazy.... 5/2/2008

My number one love in life is a good bbq joint. When my boyfriend suggested we have dinner at Virgils when we were leaving Madame Tousseaus last weekend, I was more than excited to check it out. It was after 11pm, and the place was crowded which was a drag....but lets get down to the food. The appetizers were delicious, we ordered hush puppies (which comes with a cinnamon butter that melts right into them) and the plate provided a generous proportion, leaving us with leftover hush puppies for two days. For dinner,\r I ordered the brisket (my heart belongs to brisket!) and the lamb. I am not sure what kind of sauce they use, or how it is smoked, but it's incredible. The taste was so unique, with hints of sweetness spices that were out of this world. The meat was tender, fell apart in my mouth. We were too full for dessert (bummer) so we had coffee and were on our way. Also to mention, whoever our waitress was, she was really sweet and helpful. \r \r If you went once and were not impressed, try it again. I am awfully picky about my bbq joints... Pros: brisket, pulled pork, lamb, hush puppies, great service Cons: very crowded more

avoid at all means 4/7/2008

well i worked there for a while and the place sucks..the bbq is not smoked well the kitchen workers sweat over the food..theres rodents in the basement..management hah dont even get me going..they are so un-experienced at it..the food is tasteless and rubbery..the only good thing they have going on for them is the location..the drinks are prepared by unprofessional staff and they are mostly mixers no booze at all..the frozen drinks are prepared and reused for days even weeks..if u want to get sick go right ahead..the servers are rude and leave your card open so they can add a tip even after u left, if you dont believe it ask lisa or aquino they would answer you..the bar staff is slow they talk behind the customers back make fun of them ask francis he knows about it..jess the bartender robs from the tips he doesnt report all of the profits and gives away drinks to some customers messes up the timing of the orders and then gets mad to the cheff..the server frank steals drinks from the service bar along with Pedro the service bartender that sends ``soda`` to the cheff downstairs by soda i mean ``patron - dos herraduras - corazon mixed with coke`` in exchange for steaks and stuff he also drinks at his workplace..why do u guys think there is so much coronas missing?? do the math..thats all i have to say now..if u want to get sick..overpriced food that u can make at home go there Cons: everything from the start to the end more

down down hill 4/5/2008

i too use to go to virgil's about 4- 5 yrs ago they change so much and the price went up so high for the worst.went there march 2 it was horrible. we had to wait a will to get seated then when they finally seated us we had to get up for people who came after us because they was larger and they sat us at a dirty table. more

used to be good 2/15/2008

I started going here 3 years ago, and stopped last summer. The meat kept getting fattier, the drinks weaker, and the prices are absurd for bbq. i don't think the meat is smoked as real bbq is supposed to be. i had dinosaur bbq on my list for a long time... places to try, but didn't because of the location. The distance is worth it, especially since I don't have to go into tourist hell and pay tourist prices! sorry virgils, i was loyal for 2 1/2 years but your service and food went downhill too far to get back up. more

Enjoyed it! 11/30/2007

My husband and I went to Virgil's for Thanksgiving dinner. We had never had Thanksgiving dinner BBQ style but were pleasantly pleased. The turkey was very good and the portions were big enough that I had leftovers. I would love to go back someday and try the ribs. We recommend Virgil's BBQ. more

Awesome BBQ! 10/16/2007

Great food and service to go along with it. We went when there wasn't a wait (10pm), after a show. The server was very nice and attentive and we didn't have to wait at all. The BBQ is one of the best I've had. Pros: Service, Ambiance was all good more

good barbecue 9/10/2007

great atmosphere, good meat, great variety on the menu. busy and kind of loud, but not too bad for a times square restaurant. i love a restaurant that offers cheese grits as a side dish. Pros: great variety compared with other barbecue places in the area Cons: loud and busy more

Horrible BBQ 9/4/2007

Very old meat. Was cooked days before I was served. The portions were small. The baked beans were old and dry. Pros: excellent margaritas, clean bathroom, good waiter Cons: old ribs and sausage, small portions more

You can find better BBQ else where 7/30/2007

I would have to agree with the past reviews of Virgils, the BBQ is just average, and considering the price i wouldn't advise going here. I had to wait 10 min for my waiter to come and take my order, the food came literally in 2 min, even before my drink. The waiter never returned and had to ask another slower waitress for the bill. The pulled pork and chicken were good, and ask for fries instead of the minature portion of potatoe salad, for more value. But again, i think there are numerous better BBQ restaurantes and places in the times square area. Pros: Cant really think of anything Cons: Food, service and price more

Great For Tourists! 7/20/2007

As long as the tourists are not from down south. The food is just average. It doesn't compare to Daisy Mae's, Blue Smoke, Dinosaur or even Spanky''s on the next block. And its definitely not worth navigating Times Square to get to it. Pros: Get to see Mid-Westerners Wearing I Love NY Tee-Shirts Cons: Average BBQ more

Virgil's ribs aren't bad, but..... 5/13/2007

Real ribs when prepared in the south have the membrane underneath removed as well as the tuffer meat above the joint, neither of which were done at Virgil's. In competition this would have cost valuable points. The meat was tender enough...the dry rub was fine...maybe a touch over powering...not allowing the flavor of the pork and the woods it was cooked over to fully come through.... the sauce on the table was good...it went well with the rub...I liked the spicy sauce best. The biscuits and gravy were to die for! I've always stayed away from sawmill gravy north of the Mason Dixon Line but I've gotta hand it to Virgil's for serving up some of the finest tasting white gravy I've ever had. When I come again to NYC I'll go back and try something other than the ribs.\r \r more

NY's #1 RESTUARANT, EVER!!!!!!!!! 3/23/2007

I am in love with this restuarant! I go here about once a month and every time, I am soooo satisfied! They have the best biscuits, mashed potatoes, and steaks! They also are really helpful if you have an allergy! Pros: BEST BISCUITS EVER! Cons: Bit Pricey, but totally worth it! more

Prepare to be WELL FED!!! 1/19/2007

Ahhhh... Virgil's. Follow my directions carefully - order the chili cheez fries (yes thats right), the biscuit n gravy, and a house salad (ranch dressing on the side). For entree, the beef brisket with collard greens and/or corn on the cob and/or baked beans and/or mashed potatoes and/or .... oh wait.. i can't continue any more because i'm full just thinking about all this food. My only regret is that my stomach is not 20 times bigger than it is, because the food at virgils is soooo good and tasty that you will just get MAD that you can't fit any more of that tasty goodness in your belly. \r yum..\r i'm serious about those chili cheez fries. You laugh. But i mean, the fries are perfect with a little skin on them, the chili is some kind of special chili with no beans that is just perfect, and they don't mess around with the cheese - they use Velveeta. they are not getting fancy. They are just getting down and dirty, the way real BBQ should be. ONe time i got a bunch of friends together and invited them to join me at Virgils for dinner. There was about 12 of us and we ordered 3 plates of chili cheez fries for the table as an appetizer. One friend showed up late. He was laughing at us for being so trashy with our cheez fries. Well, that is, until he had the last 3 bites that were left. THEN he proceeded to order chili cheez fries as HIS ENTREE because they were so good and he just had to have more. TRUE STORY!!!\r enjoy. Pros: Fantastic savory satisfying BBQ - professional staff more

Pretty Good Food 12/23/2006

I moved up from the south for a job and I could not find good BBQ anywhere. This is the closest thing to southern BBQ in the north, but nothing can't beat real southern BBQ. Try the dry rubbed ribs. If you like chopped pork make sure you ask for bread. For some reason this dish did not come with bread. Its just a plate of meat. \r \r We made reservations for a Saturday night at 6:30pm. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:15pm and it was packed. There was a two hour wait for people who did not have reservations. The host told us we had to wait at the bar, but we will definitely be seated at 6:30pm. When 6:30pm comes by our names was called and we were seated. Pros: Pretty good food for the north, service, great drinks, and atmosphere. Cons: Parking more

A Friday Feast 11/2/2006

We were just at Virgil's for a Friday lunch. This was my first visit and I expected the food to be a complete greasefest, but I was mistaken. \r \r We had a very short wait at the bar before our table was available. Our order was taken promptly however it took around 30 minutes for our food to arrive. By this stage it was just gone 1pm and the place was really busy so I guess it's understandable.\r \r I had the Virgil Burger (with Fries). The burger was cooked to perfection, the meat delicious and tender and nothing about it was overly greasy. Combined with the Scorned Woman hot sauce, it made for a real treat. I wasn't too happy with my fries - around 50% of them were badly burnt to the point of being inedible. My colleagues fries were fine - I guess I was just unlucky.\r \r Overall. great BBQ food and I'd definitely return. Pros: BBQ Food, Choice of delicious sauces Cons: Slow service more

Best Hush Puppies in the North Country 11/1/2006

You may have to wait to be seated, but it's worth it. Not only are the main dishes exceptional, so are the side dishes, which is rarity with most rib restaurants! Pros: big portions, ambience Cons: parking, taking home left overs more

Not that great, but good location 10/31/2006

As a Southerner, I can't say that this is particularly good barbecue. That being said, they do serve good drinks, it's a great place for large groups, and it's very conveniently located, especially if you're going to a Broadway show. Overall, slightly above average. Pros: Great location Cons: So-so food and ambience more

Great service and great food. Get busy before Theater time and weekends, but definitely worth the wait. 9/25/2006

Virgil's is awesome!!!!!!! Everything is great there. My favorite is the chicken fried steak. There is a large selection of beers, but if you don't drink get the sweet tea. Pros: food, service Cons: wait on weekends and before the theater more
