Val's has been around for many years and has withstood the test of time. The menu has remained the same and the burgers, shakes and fries continue to be the best. Parking is limited and there is usually a line so it's good to get there early. It's anold-fashioned burger joint that the whole family will enjoy. more

I've relocated from the California Bay Area to Houston, Texas and the meal I miss the most (and both Houston and the S.F. Bay Area has unquestionably great food) is Val's burgers! Made to order--Quality prime beef, ground specially to assure the quality and the steak cut french fries make Val's burger meal better than any other anywhere. Well-done or rare, from the baby burger(1/4 pound) to the papa burger(1 pound), you can top them with your preference: raw or smothered onions, sweet or dill pickle, several type of cheese choices and more. You can travel across the nation looking for a better burger, and, I have, and you will not find a better burger and fries, anywhere. Vals.If you live in the East Bay and do not know this name ,I feel sorry for you.This is THE best burger and shake joint.It's the real deal 50's diner.Not some ""made to look like a diner"" place. Here are some tips for the newbies so you will look like a Vals Pro.Order your shake as an ""all around"" , i.e. ""i'll have an all around chocolate shake"" .It's on the menu so you can read up on it.Also, the vegetable soup is awesome, and so is the clam chowder on Fridays.Order a side of sauteed onions for your burger too. Best Burgers Ever! 5/20/2004

If you want a burger that would shame In-N-Out or a steak that makes you forget Outback, Val's is the place to go. It's a little tiny hole-in-the-wall type of place that has a vintage diner feel and seriously delicious homestyle cooking for a very reasonable pricetag. We have never been there and not LOVED everything that we ordered. From super-thick shakes served the old-fashioned way, to tasty chili and the ridiculously big Papa Burger, it's all fantastic! The BEST Burger in the Bay Area 4/19/2003

I've been eating Val's Burgers for years! Even though I no longer live in the Bay Area, I still go back for a Val's burger every time I'm in town. You can't find a better burger anywhere. It's small and quaint, and you may have to wait for a table - but the service is great and the food is fantastic. They're fast, but not fast food and you get a lot for your money! THE BEST BURGER 2/24/2003

Get the mama for regular folks, but if u are really hungry, get the papa. It doesnt look like it when u get it, but these are the best burgers anywhere. Dont drown it with a lot of condiments either. Get a basket of fries to share for 2 people, and make sure u get a milk shake, u will not be disapointed. Get there at or before 5 and u wont have to wait. This burger is an ""event."" It's also not for the feint of heart or a calorie pincher. But for a special occasion - or when ya just gotta have a burger.......why settle? Go for a Val's Buger! Great Burgers. Order one of their terrific Milk Shakes and you get the metal container holding the excess, that it was made in. Parking is atrocious. You're going to have to wait outside or jammed inside, standing. Is the food worth the inconvenience? Yes. Don't go here for the ambiance. You're sitting elbow to elbow with the other dinners. This is the best burger joint ever! The burgers are cooked the way you want them and all the condiments (onions, pickles, etc) are on each table. The shakes are fountain style and the basket of fries are unbeliveable. Breakfast is really a treat here, also! A real diner with great food! This place has been in business since the 30's and is packed all the time! more
