Unprofessional and Obnoxious 11/30/2008

As sportsbars go The Valley Tavern, and consequently The Dubliner (same owner, same block), try very hard but fail as places to go see the ""big game"". The televisions, while plentiful, have the distinction of being roughly ten feet directly above your head, making for a very sore neck after three hours of football. In addition, the view from the seating area another twenty feet away is no better, and from there you will also have to wait a century before the waitress will arrive to take your order. For that matter I found the bartenders to be completely obnoxious when I sat at the bar. When the waitress came to take my order (at 11 am) I let her know I would need some water to rehydrate first and would then have a beer. She brought me my water. Immediately following, the second waitress behind the bar also asked me what I would like to drink. I told her the same thing. Within fifteen seconds of that conversation the owner approached me from behind the bar as well. He informed me that there was a two drink minimum and that he was ""trying to run a business"". This all took place within three minutes of my arrival. Is this really the way to treat your customers?\r \r Suprisingly, the owner decided to utilize this same setup for both of his pubs. Pros: Yuppies and Hipsters staring up at a TV Cons: surly, obnoxious bartender chicks with tattoos more

Valley Tavern 11/20/2006

When I moved to noe I vowed i would never go out in the suburbanite neighborhood. However the TAvern is really close, its spacious, theres a smoking room, pinball, you can bring in food from the outside and theres a big patio. So it has its benefits. Its deifintely not the usual crowd for the city but its a nice neighborhoody bar and on Sundays they have every football game you could want to see. I have heard people complain about the lack of quick service but I feel its part of the laid-back atmosphere -- theres certainly no one in a rush in there. more

I agree with the last reviewer. This used to be a great bar to meet for a quiet drink. Now there are so many televisions that it's like some kind of sensory-overload nightmare. It's okay when there's a Giants game or something, but when there's not a sporting event, would it kill them to turn them off? Do we need 15 screens of infomercials? I think the warm, friendly vibe of this bar has been ruined by covering every spare surface with a television screen. Pros: Good booze selection, smoking lounge, accepts credit cards Cons: Too many TVs, Fairly pricey more

Valley Tavern Destroyed By Television Onslaught 1/18/2006

This used to be our local, but it was bought by the owner of the Dubliner. He raised prices, and installed an obscene number of televisions in what used to be a quiet neighborhood bar. We still stop by occasionally, but the visual and audio din is just about unbearable. Its not really a neighborhood bar, and it doesn't work as a sports bar. Hopefully someone will let the owner know that 15 televisions are just too many. Pros: smoking lounge, pool tables, not crowded Cons: too many TVs, can't use patio, not cheap more

perfect afternoon/evening spot 8/24/2004

Great selection of draught beers. FREE wireless internet! Great big patio in back which is often ALL mine (w/ my friends). Owner is nice Irish guy who loves to talk and is often around. Never bad music. Very relaxed atmosphere and average prices. Staff don't mind if you bring in take-out to have with your beer. Pros: Perfect neigh'ood bar, free internet, Friendly staff Cons: , Pkg's tough fri/sat more

The wireless internet saved my life. 8/24/2004

And it is the perfect neighborhood bar as well. Pool, great service, ATM, juke box, etc. more

Comfy spot 5/16/2004

It has changed from the old days. My friends and I like new big leather booths and pool table. I've never had a an issue with service, in fact I like the laid back vibe they have. The new flat screen TVs are nice to catch the Giants on. Pros: Lots of room, Internet Jukebox more

Rude bartenders detract from coolness 8/24/2003

This bar has the potential to be awesome. It has a nice, roomy front area, pinball machines, a pool table, good drink selection, and an incredible multi-leveled back patio. Unfortunately, the place suffers from the rude bartenders who haven't changed (in attitude) since it was the Coyote Club. I went into the Valley Tavern with high hopes that the service would be different since the name had changed. I was disappointed. I waited a full 5 minutes for service at an almost empty bar while the bartender chatted with her girlfriend. After I coughed and stared pointedly enough to tear her away from her conversation, the bartender acted as if I was the jerk for interrupting. Needless to say, although I live only a few blocks away, I'll be continuing to avoid the bar that sits on 24th St. between Castro and Noe no matter what name it goes by. Pros: Back patio Cons: Bad service, bad atmosphere more
