best hair cut 10/4/2011

Excellent hair cutter, from flat-top to business look, and retro 1950s styles, this guy is good. (No wonder he is always booked.) Finding a good barber was very satisfying. I was EXTREMELY happy with the cut and the strait razor shave on my neck. Overall, hands down five stars. more

Really good 10/3/2011

Really good service here. I come here all the time for a good shampoo, cut and shave. more

great barber shop 9/30/2011

Sate Street Barber has become my new barber shop. They really know what they are doing and they do such an amazing job at it. The best thing is they open through out the whole week so they can fix me up any day. Highly recommended them to all my boys already and they like them too. more

""Current"" 9/15/2011

Getting a hair cut at State Street Barber reminds me when I was back in Detroit as a little kid going to the neighborhood barbershop. Nothing like the hot lather and straight edge razor shaving your neck and the then the hot towel to clean you up. No more mullet. I held onto that thing as long as I could and now I look more ""current"". more

Fits my schedule 9/9/2011

I love this place. It's like a good old fashioned haircut with minimal fuss and wait time. Close to home and the hours fit my schedule. more

Great 9/8/2011

Val is so great. I usually call in advance to make sure she is available. I love the atmosphere of this shop. It feels like family coming in here to get my hair cut. more

Great shop 9/7/2011

Great barbershop. Always quick, courteous, quality and very inexpensive. Best barber in Boston, I think. more

cool place 9/6/2011

I like the massage they give you when you get your hair cut. They're super relaxing and they aint that expensive. Great place and I will be back for sure. more

Well worth the money 8/31/2011

I have gone to a traditional barbershop all my life back in Michigan. I recently moved to Boston and I knew I had to find a good barbershop. After a few unsuccessful tries, I heard about State Street Barber. Their staff is professional, knowledgeable, and will work with you to give you a cut you will love. This placed has renewed my faith by mixing traditional atmosphere of a barber shop with more service than just using clippers. Well worth the money. . more

Never Disappoints 8/4/2011

I first moved to Boston, and my gf at the time recommended it; luckily, my remaining hairs were in the hands of the Master himself, Tom. Ever since, I have sojourned to the South End every month-six weeks for Tom to take care of me. Great haircut, remembers your style (and your life), takes meticulous time with you, and it comes out looking fantastic every time (clearly dependent on what you started with). Super nice guy, lots of fun every time I'm in there, and can squeeze you in if you're persistent. Most importantly, he never disappoints, and that's why you're going there. more

Definitely Worth It 8/4/2011

This place is fantastic. I work at a local hotel and whenever a gentleman asks me for a place to have his hair trimmed, State Street is the only place I recommend. I moved to Boston about a year ago and have gone about a dozen times and each time is great. The people are friendly and they know how to cut hair. At first I was a little taken back by the price but when you can leave feeling good about the way you look, it is definitely worth it. Give Ben a try. more

Second to None 8/1/2011

This is for all of you - gentlemen, guys, dudes, buddies, men, whatever, even women. This was an amazing experience. The place was recommended by couple of friends, the barber was getting reviews - too good to be true. So one day I decided to check the place and barber out. I am a realist in life and do not believe everything I hear or read, I have to see it myself, process it myself - decide it for myself. But this ended up to be almost better than advertised... The salon is nice, the service is very good, but the barber is beyond description. The professionalism, backed up by years and years of experience, the attitude, the old world school, the way he expresses himself with his thick Russian accent, the jokes, the wisdom, the ease that he puts you in, when he holds the blade in his hand, the precise cut that you get, the softness and the amazing feeling of your face when he is done shaving, the whole experience is amazing to say the least. Second to none! So many words out of me for 1 hour (almost) experience is not usual, but I felt I had to pay the respect to the true professional, that really deserves it. The name of the Master - the Barber is Val. Check him out. more

An Easy 5 Stars 8/1/2011

It's an easy five stars. For what you get, I'd so far as to say $34 is a good price, even if they no longer can serve beer (darn lawyers!). My second haircut was even better than the first. I can say that they went out of their way to make my experience amazing. I saw other people getting shampoos and neck shaves, etc., when I was there, so I'm happy to know that anyone I refer there will get great treatment and service. more

So bad, I'm taking the time to write a review 1/19/2010

Worst experience I ever had. The skill of the barbers is poor. Cons: overpriced - could have had the same service at Supercuts more

State St. Barbers is fantastic 2/28/2009

I work in the South End and a few of my co-workers have been raving about State St. Barbers. The weather finally got nicer so I decided to check it out. Beautiful space, very nice girl at the front desk. My barber's name was Ben Jr. Great guy, well-spoken. I wanted something professional but not conservative and he knocked it out of the park. I got back to the office and a couple of the secretaries gave me major thumbs up on my new 'do. I'll definitely be paying Ben Jr. another visit in a few weeks. Pros: excellent quality, great environment, good value more

They compelled me to sign up and write my first bad review. 1/23/2009

The entire haircut was spent listening to the guy complain that i was 12 minutes late. For 15 minutes I was lectured like a high schooler that ditched home room. I warned them I was coming from Malden, and that I might be a little late. Pros: If it was cut the right length, I'm sure it would have been fine. Cons: Everything else you could possibly imagine. Supercuts is better. more

Excellent and Professional Barber. 1/22/2009

Classy but comfortable atmosphere. Cut was excellent and professional. Service friendly and warm. Prices very reasonable for the quality. Recommend without hesitation. Pros: Value, Service, Cut more

Boston Branch Unimpressive 7/7/2008

There are no ""sit-in"" barbers but they are rather called in when an appointment is made. So the shop is very precise with the timing: you must not be more than ten minutes late or else your appointment is void. Not the most customer friendly in this respect. The quality of the cut varies with the barbers, some are mildly competent while others are unskillful (based on three trials). The shop setting is decent and is reminiscent of a classic barbershop, so this is probably the only nice thing going for it, aside from a free soda (used to be beer) upon arrival. With the new price at $34, this place is for those who value decor over substance. There will not be anymore trial for this reviewer. Pros: decor Cons: skill, price, customer service more

Now that's a great haircut 4/23/2008

I just tried State St. Barbers after a very disappointing experience I had in January at High Street on Newbury. I'm glad I found this place. Everything was so much more professional and the barber was 10 times better! You know how you can just tell who truly cares about what they're doing and who is just trying to earn a buck? I felt like my barber (Nour) really took time to understand what I wanted and then he delivered, big time. I went back to my office and several people were complimenting my haircut. I haven't had that happen before! At $34, I thought it was very reasonable. And I didn't have a hard time finding parking like on Newbury. Pros: expert service, elegant decor, easy parking more

dressed up supercuts 1/18/2008

Overrated. Really just an overpriced and well packaged supercuts. If you have short or buzzed hair, its a nice experience and the complementary beer is a good start, but if you have medium or long hair, it is not the place to go for a real stylist. I will not go back. more
