Good food, good staff, great sake 10/6/2009

Richard the bartender was great - explained the different sake selections in detail, and even gave me a taste of some of the unfiltered sake which was great. The fish was fresh, which really defines the difference between good sashimi and bad sashimi. Overall a great experience for a single businessman's night out on the town. Pros: Waitstaff friendly, fresh fish more

best japanese experience in SF 2/2/2009

Great music, sake, fish and vibes. friendly staff and right around the corner from the Independent. Pros: ambiance Cons: ?? more

Not a place to go if you are serious Sushi Lover 1/22/2009

Atmosphere of Tsunami was very nice and modern looking unlike typical Sushi place. My wife and I was looking forward to their Sushi, since the owner was Japanese. After reading high reviews from CitySearch, my expectation was very high. However, we were very disappointed when we saw the rolls served on our plate, and our instinct was damn right about how it was going to taste. Sushi here must be made by some kind of Amateur...only some Caucasian people who doesn't know real Sushi would give 5 star for this 1 star sushi. (No wonder we were the only Asian customer!) I should have realized that CitySearch in San Francisco must have been rated mostly by non-Asian people!! I lived in Japan for 14 years, and I know what real sushi taste like. Never go there expecting authentic Japanese sushi. Oh and also, i would never order Plum wine there. They use cheap Plum wine which taste like cough syrup, we had whole bottle for ourselves but couldn't finish them (only had a glass...so awful). Good thing we went there when it was Happy Hour...other wise we could have wasted so much of our money. Only thing that impressed me was it's large selection of Japanese Sake and Caucasian waitresses who had very good accent on Japanese menu's and they were all hot. I'm sure there are other better things, and I would probably go for drinking but definitely not for Sushi... Pros: Good Service, Romantic Ambience Cons: Awful Sushi, and Awful Plum Wine more

Great sushi - Poor service. 1/19/2009

The sushi was really fresh and really good (for the little that we had). The presentation was equally as pleasing. Unfortunately for this place, I have no tolerance for poor service. We had reservations and were seated immediately. It took a half hour for our drinks to arrive. We ordered an appetizer and the first of our main courses. They arrived at the same time(?) and by that time our drinks were empty. Our server didn't check on us for another half hour and it was not busy. She was horrible! Maybe her cat died earlier in the day?? By the time we finally got her attention we had to ask for the check and get out of there before our heads exploded. Too trendy for my taste as well. I don't recommend this place. Pros: Fresh Sushi Cons: Horrible Service more

If You Know Sushi This Is The Best 5/22/2008

First I would like to ask where can you eat decent sushi for less than $40 or $50 a person. This is what a person would spend at Tsunami or the like of Tsunami spots in the city. Expensive if your hang out are WEBE sushi for example. Pros: Sushi, sake' ambiance, late noght dining Cons: parking more

Love Tsunami 4/14/2008

Tsunami is a great place, maybe not for everyone, but I know Japanese food and they do too, Chef Adashi buys fresh fish daily and cares about the quality very much, yes it is pricey and if you want a cheap California roll and some crappy hot sake look somewhere else! Tip the chefs a beer and you can't go wrong! Pros: As a regular.... everyone says Hi! Cons: Small sushi bar 4 seats, of course the best palce to sit more

Avoid it 2/18/2008

Staff was unprofessional, the manager or someone who I thought was one was extremely rude. The sushi sampler was too expensive for four types of fish and two small slices each at $25. My friends and I had two samplers - three small one ounce shots which cost $16 each. Our tab for a sushi sampler, two sake samplers was $60. The sushi came with some greens stuffed into a small shot glass and didnt even have any dressing. Our waitress came twice to check if we were okay - to actually check if we needed to order more food. When we said we were pacing ourselves - we just came from dinner. She came back with our check without us asking for it. The music? - Rock and Alternative music- it didnt quiet go along with the Japanese decor. Oh and for that manager, my friend noticed that the area where she was sitting was wet- yes water under the table. She came to wipe the floor herself but how she said ""its okay now"" was so patronizing and condescending that we should have taken it as a sign. We should have not stayed to order. Pros: Ambience is good Cons: Everything is terrible - service poor, food and drinks are not worth it more

best sushi ever 12/31/2007

anyone who says tsunami has bad service must have outrageous expectations or be too old for this restaraunt. we usually sit at the sushi bar and talk it up with Adachi or Thomas (coolest sushi chefs ever!) and enjoy 1/2 off hand rolls and sake. Every person I have brought to Tsunami has said this was the best sushi they have ever eaten, and I have the same feeling every time I go there (about once a week). Thier fish is fresh, crab is delicious, and specials are awesome. Tsunami definitely is not a one star place, and the proof is in the jam-packed restaraunt every night. Pros: best sushi Cons: expensive more

Low and Sushi and Poor Service for Sushi Lovers 11/15/2007

Sushi is not so good and not worth the money. Service is poor on average and the best you can expect is one glass of water. Staff is likely to encourage you to pay the bill and leave quickly so they can refill your table. Pros: location Cons: food, service, sushi more

Worst Service in the City 9/22/2007

If I could give a zero stars rating I would do it. The wait staff at this restaruant is totally unprofessional and appears to be drunk and high. Get a clue and stay away from this terrible place!! There are too many other good restaurants in San Francisco to waste your time here. more

Amazing Sushi, great atmosphere 9/13/2007

I went to Tsunami for the first time tonight and was very pleased with my experience. Firstly, and most importantly, the sushi was incredible. The sashimi was fresh and had great texture; the rolls were large and delicious (spider roll and the mama san). Although I do agree with many of the reviews about the inattentive waitstaff, I must say that the absolute opposite was true of the sushi chefs. We sat at the sushi bar and had a wonderful experience being waited on by the sushi chefs, who were friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable. The icing on the cake was the fun and trendy atmosphere, which I felt was not pretentious as I had heard. Pros: amazing sushi, friendly sushi chefs, atmosphere Cons: inattentive waitstaff, a little on the expensive side more

Zagat Review Is Correct Somehow 7/19/2007

I always enjoy reading Zagat before going to places to eat. On this one Zagat underrated them but were close. Fish is amazingly super fresh with very pretty presentations... Sachimi is out of this world. I was there Wed when they offered a selection of fish I never heard off that was flown to them from Japan .. Very good. Pros: sushi fresh ... sake' Cons: busy more

One Star ... maybe 7/13/2007

From all the amazing reviews, I thought this would be the best sushi in the city. Wrong, wrong, wrong. I went last night w a friend. It's trendy, I guess, and they def squeeze as many tables in there as possible. The service was s-l-o-w and our waitress in particular kind of hung around the table waiting for us to order more food even when we'd say 'so, I think that's all for now'. Odd. The fish is fresh, I'll give them that, but the rolls are totally small for the price and I highly recommend staying away from their Hawaiian Pokki Salad. Hawaiian Pokki is DICED tuna; this tuna has been pounded to the point where it looks like a sheet of mica. You can barely even see it given the super dark atmosphere and the fact that it's so thin. It ends up being warm - less density = gets warmer quicker - which doesn't help w it settling all that well. Overall, if you're looking for a marina-esque sushi place in the western addition - this is your place. If you want an amazing sushi experience for half the price, head over to Zushi Puzzle on Lombard. Fish is fresh, rolls are CREATIVE and big, and the staff is amazing! Pros: Trendy, maybe you can find a new girlfriend Cons: Small rolls, little light - can barely see your food, not-so-bright waitstaff more

WHAT, YOU HAVEN'T HEARD? 7/10/2007

NOT IMPRESSED @ ALL. DEFINATELY FELT LIKE AN OUTSIDER IN THIS HIPSTER HAVEN. SUSHI IS PAR @ BEST, AND THE STAFF SEEMED TO BE WAY MORE INTERESTED IN THE INDIE ROCK BAND PLAYING LATER THAT NIGHT THAN THE MEAL I WAS ORDERING. I FREQUENT MANY SUSHI RESTAURANTS IN THE CITY THAT HAVE A GOOD BUZZ ABOUT THEM, BUT THIS ONE WAS WAY OVERRATED. LOWER YOUR PRICES, AND LEARN TO APPRECIATE YOUR CUSTOMERS. SERVICE IS WHAT ATTRACTS SOMEONE TO A RESTAURANT AND THE FOOD IS WHAT KEEPS THEM COMING BACK. AT THIS POINT THE FOOD IS DECENT, WHICH MEANS TSUNAMI HAS SOME WORK TO DO. Pros: THEY SPENT A LOT ON THE DECOR!!! Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE. more

Very Good 5/21/2007

I have been here two times and I was struck by how relaxed the setting is it be sitting at the bar or lounge area although the lounge felt a bit tight at least the table we got. the place has a great energy about it with very cute servers who realy knew their product and very fun cute chefs working the bar. Pros: fish, sake, atmosphere Cons: parking more

Great fish, but kinda pretentious 4/6/2007

First of all, no qualms with the sushi. It was very tasty and fresh. The problem is that there are probably a dozen other sushi places with as good or better fish. In this competitive market, it is imperative for waitstaff to make each and every customer feel comfortable and wanted. I left tsunami feeling that I was neither welcomed nor wanted. I should elaborate, it wasn't that I was affirmatively mistreated, just that I felt like a leper. It seemed that the waitstaff was more concerned with themselves than with serving me. It was like being served by the ""cool kid"" in high-school who hasn't the time nor energy to acknowledge your presence. So next time, I'm going to Koo or Sushi Bistro or Sushi Groove or Kabuto . . . . more

Loud and expensive mediocre sushi. 3/9/2007

My wife and I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in the city. We have our favorites, but we also like to branch out and try new ones. Last night we took a friend to Tsunami and I was really dissapointed. I can't believe this place got a rating of 9.8! more

Excellent 11/17/2006

This place is gourgous in design and seems to offer the best sushi in the city. Fish is super fresh with emphasis on presentation. The chefs wear funky street clothes and they are all young and act very fun behind sushi bar. Now the killer in this place is the sake list that I dont think exists anywhere in this city .. we sampled couple of diffrent sakes then got a nice Junmai sake bottle that was excellent. All in all, this place is great but for those who are on ""budgets"" probably not the best spot for them.. it is not super expensive but not cheap either.. Pros: sake, design, service Cons: parking, parking more

Not worth your money!!! 10/31/2006

Cocktails are tasty, get in for happy hour if you can. Rolls are crazy expensive and small portioned. Menu is also pretty limited. Fish is fine, but not spectacular, and esp for the price. Service is friendly, middle tables are a bit cramped and close to one another. Total was $120 for two people incl 2 drinks each (one at happy hour) and we definitely WERE NOT full. Pros: Tasty cocktails Cons: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, small portions more

melts in your mouth 10/7/2006

this place is tres expensive.... and worth every penny. if you have the means and love sushi, you must have a seat here. Bring your appetite, and plan to stay awhile Pros: sushi is best in SF. That says something. Ambience & presentation are great too Cons: $$$$$$$$$$$$ more
