This is my spot! 5/5/2011

I am a big fan of Vietnamese food and as a really picky eater and not a big meat eater, I must say that they got the kind of grilled pork with steam rice that I want! I rarely see fat on the meat, they use a leaner kind of meat and it taste delicious! I love their sandwiches especially their soup and their avocado smoothie! I hope they are open on Saturdays but apparently they are not. They get super busy during lunch and I can tell that everyone loves to eat here! I just sometimes hate the service, but I love the fact they get my food ready and done so quick! Food makes up for the service :) more

My favorite Vietnamese Restaurant in town! 2/15/2010

I have been going to this restaurant since it was located at the old Que Huong supermarket shopping center... then it later moved to the former Pho Cong Ly location, and I was devasted for the year or so when they closed down to their current location on Travis. The owners and waiters are ALWAYS friendly. Even the bus boys and the guys that bring out the food are nice to the customers. Its very clean and parking is manageable due to no other businesses open in the small center. I have tried nearly everything on their menu, and I have to say that I have loved everything. You can judge a good Asian restaurant (Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, etc) by how many of those customers of that culture are actually dining there!! You see many whites, hispanics, blacks... and most of all Asians here! It appeals to everyone. And if Asians like the food here, that means its authentic and tastes like what our mama's made at home. Don't think that Pei Wei and PF Chang's is the best asian food you have ever had, because it's not!! Thien An is the real deal. And for the price the food is offered at, you can more than what you've paid!! Pros: Best Banh Xeo, friendliest service, great desserts, cheap Cons: cash only, crazy busy during lunch more

PHO Hot Spot 10/31/2008

Excellent Pho and great service just give your self some time cause it gets really busy during lunch more

Best bet for yummy, cheap Vietnamese outside of Bellaire's Chinatown 4/3/2008

We drove by Thien An dozens of times on our way to Les Givral's (2704 Milam) without giving it a chance because it's forgettable from the outside, located in a tiny strip that we thought would forever be cursed with failed businesses (formerly housing a gelato place called the Italian Hut; I think the old sign is still there). But we're so glad we finally made the stop and have become regulars. The pho is excellent, satisfying and the broth not too greasy. One of the most popular dishes is the banh xeo and rightly so. It has nice crunchy edges (perfecting lacey crisp edges is the art of making banh xeo); it's a bit harder all around than I like to make mine but it is fragrant (mm, creamy coconut) and best of all, fun-sized - order it and your eyes will get big too! For fun, we once counted the number of times a plate of banh xeo came out of the kitchen while we were there for lunch - forgot the count but it was definitely in the double digits! Their Vietnamese sandwiches are okay but nothing special. We always forget to ask them to go easy toasting it - usually the bread comes out too hard. So we still like to go to Les Givral's for banh mi, if for no other reason than they are close by. Thien An stocks a small selection of Vietnamese desserts (don't think they are made on premise; I'm sure they all come from Chinatown) but I wish they kept more on hand for my che cravings. A nice surprise is they actually have good customer service, so rare in Chinatown! If only they weren't closed on Saturdays, oddly! Pros: Great value more

Best com ga ro ty 1/8/2007

Best com ga ro ty (roast chicken w/ fried rice) in town !!! pho is not so good, banh mi is also good. Cheap and simple Vietnamese Pros: cheap and good food Cons: cash only, parking more

Can't beat the price...or the service 11/14/2005

A coworker introduced me to this place a few months ago. All I can say is great food, huge portions, and best of all, the service was outstanding. The guys and girls that work there have to be the most polite people on earth. I have eaten at almost every Vietnamese restaurant in the midtown area and this one has the best mix of high quality food and great service. If you want banh mi sandwiches, pass on all the other locations and eat here. You can actually taste how fresh the ingredients are. Pros: Service, Huge Portions, Taste Cons: Cash Only(no biggie) more
