Best

I have read the reviews on here and have to strongly disagree with some peoples opinion of the staff! I don't think they are rude or standoffish at all! You just have to get to ...

Worst

The people who run this place suck. There is no nice way to say it. The personalities run from obnoxious to bitterly aloof. I know there are some people who chalk this up to "...

Its all Good 8/2/2007

I have been coming here since I was about 15, and have always been happy with the food and service. The pepper-salted squid and shrimp is out of this world. Kung Pao Combo is also great. Don't worry about the service, its fine. Great prices and food keeps me coming back for more. Pros: All the food is great more

Best Chinese Food I Ever Ate 7/19/2007

I was 57 years old before I tasted the best Chinese food I ever put in my mouth. No fooling. The food is perfect. You can taste and identify and slowly savor each and every ingredient in their dishes.I've eaten there many times since and they have never missed a beat.Just thinking about one eggplant dish makes my tummy moan. The squid is fantastic. I've never had a bad meal there. Pros: cheap.great food.ez parking.good service.nice folks.kid friendly. more

General Tso's Tofu = MMMMMMMMM. 3/30/2007

My dad, who is by no means a high-falutin' food guy, introduced me to Thien Hong. He's a regular for the squid--used to be once every couple of weeks, now he's retired, so goes less often. The first time I went (several years ago), I was dubious. Now it's one of the first places I take out-of-towners or friends who've never been. Rave reviews all around. Pros: tasty and affordable, fast, lazy Susan tables in back for family style Cons: not a terribly romantic place more

Decent food but felt like a cafeteria 3/14/2007

I thought this place was good but it felt more cafeteria like. Good service but not as warm and friendly like Zien Hong down the street. We did like the salt and pepper squid that we kept hearing reviews about - totally not spicy like the menu said it would but it was good. Portions are plenty at a good price. But, comparing this place w/ its equivalent Zien Hong, I'd prefer to go to Zien - we just like the cozier, smaller mom & pop feel. more

Best Squid in the City! 2/18/2007

This is our favorite place to eat pepper salted squid. The service is fast paced and to the point! Each time we go I order something new to try things I am unfamiliar with. The servers are not pushy and help you make a good choice ordering something less Americanized. Everything is really tasty here! I have been visiting for dinner at least once a week lately! Keep up the good work! Pros: Squid and vegtable dishes Cons: Parking lot is always full! more

Great Salt and Pepper Shrimp 11/12/2006

The food here is great, people come here for the salt and pepper squid and shrimp. I don't like squid but the shrimp yum! I would highly reccomend. Pros: Shrimp Cons: A little crowded on a Sunday more

i love squid...That's what it's all about!! 5/20/2006

If you haven't tried good calamari recently, then go to this place. The service might not be all that, but what do you expect, the food is the WHOLE point of going there. When I go there I don't even have to look at the menu, i just order Calamari every single time. It's like they know me better than I know myself. They know me because I go there almost every time if I'm feeling up to some delicious Chinese food. Sure the parking isn't that huge, but it's worth it since it doesn't take that long to get seated. Pros: Squid (THE BEST), fried trout fish, inexpensive Cons: parking, service more

Ying Yang 2/6/2006

Squid and honey walnut shrimp good, pork dishes and service bad. Pros: honey walnut shrimp Cons: pork, loud lady owner more

Average service, but GREAT food. 1/5/2006

Yes, the service is average and no, they don't paste on the Disneyland smiles, but this has been the most consistant Chinese fare I have found in Portland. Pepper Salted Squid, Green Beans and Asparagus dishes are outstanding and arrive with striking consistancy every time over the several years we have been coming here. Bottom line, it really is about the food. The service is always fast and to the point, but don't expect any frills or coddling here. more

don't go here 12/28/2005

I'm not sure why this restaurant has such as high rating, but the food was so-so. It is made for Americans, so I wouldn't recommend people looking for good Chinese food to come here. Also, the service is atrocious, the waiters act if they don't want to be there. Cons: mediocre food, BAD service more

Yep... it's all about the squid. 8/27/2005

Visiting Portland, I used this dining search engine to find good restaurants. Everyone in regards to this restaurant suggested the Salt/Pepper Squid. Being that I order Calamari everywhere I go, I realized that I had to find out if it was the best ever. And it was so Yummy-licious. Not only that but the portions were so big that my husband and I couldn't believe how they are giving out that much squid for such a low price. As much as we loved the squid, we did not like the sweet and sour chicken. We eat white meat 90% of the time and it was dark meat and left a not so pleasant aftertaste. I'm sure we would come back for the squid. By the way, if you walk by all the tables in the restaurant, everyone has the salt/pepper squid. It's really good. Pros: No wait, Inexpensive Cons: No parking, okay service more

All That AND The Squid Too 6/19/2005

Many reviewers have told you about the fabulous Pepper Squid... and it is. But, I would also like to commend the restaurant for prompt, helpful service. They also have live shrimp, dungeness crab and lobster to chose from. We had the live shrimp, also in a pepper sauce that was amazing. Even the fried rice was wonderful. The ambiance is very nice. And the squid really is to die for. They have a VERY extensive menu. You will find something on it worth checking out. Pros: Squid, Service, Wonderful food Cons: Not enough parking more

Take a large party. 4/22/2005

I try to hit this place up for the salt and pepper squid at least once a week. Typically, I take a group of friends on Sunday afternoons or late evenings for a satisfying meal. I guarantee service may not be the best but the food is top notch. I can deal with the service because food is the star here. I get pretty good service probably because my group of friends comes in at least weekly and the hostess knows our faces. I would recommend this eatery to anyone and know that after the food is served and the plates are passed around nobody will go home hungry and the bill will not cause heartache. And by the way, if you want to get the waiters attention just stop a waitress or waiter passing by your table and they will take care of anything your table needs. Pros: Food, Inexpensive, Clean Cons: Parking more

you havn't had good calamari until now 4/21/2005

i go here enough that i don't open the menu anymore and the owner knows what we will be ordering. can't say enough about the squid. it is by far the best made and the out of towners i have taken here agree. when they visit again they want to go here. the service is ok. don't expect 4 star service and you won't be disappointed. parking can be tricky during busy times so you may have to walk a block or so but who cares its worth it for the squid. oh if you order it ""to go"" be warned that your car will smell of it for a day or two. Pros: squid, squid, more squid Cons: parking, closed mondays more

The SQUID = Yum, yum and yum! 3/22/2005

Did I mention the yummy squid? We are addicted to it----it is fabulous, you must try it!!! If you are thinking, ""I wouldn't touch squid with a ten-foot pole!"", you should try it once---even the kids love it! EVERY table we see has an order of it. The other food is decent---I like the moo shoo pork, but the salad rolls are just mediocre. The service can be really slow---but it is worth suffering through it to get the squid!!!!! One great advantage is that they have some really large tables with lazy susan's---great for groups! Pros: Salt Pepper Squid, Did I mention squid?, The squid! Cons: Slow service more

tasty and fast 8/2/2004

A great place to go for the house specialties like Pepper Salted Squid. Everything that I have ordered has been superb and the service is amazingly fast. Its as if they know what I want and call it into the kitchen when I show up. Pros: off street parking, fairly inexpensive, tasty more

Two Words: Peppered. Squid. 5/10/2004

Its all about the Peppered Squid up in this Viet/Chinese joint. Be mindful of the shotty service after 11PM, but at those prices, who cares? Pros: Peppered Squid, Late Hours, Decent Prices Cons: Service more

Wow... 4/17/2004

Never have I seen so many folks in agreement about a restaurant! Add me to the list please. Salted pepper squid is one of my favorite dishes and thien hong is the best I've ever had, hands down. However, the service is rude on occasion. Still not so bad to avoid that squid! Avoid the moo shu dishes at all costs. Pros: salted pepper squid, good value more

Ah, such squid! 11/11/2003

I spent 3 months in the land of calamari (spain), but Thien's salt and peppered squid beats out anything I tried over there. Don't worry if you're squeamish about the tentacles, the body is the best part. Service is inept, but polite. Then again, if they screw up your order, everything is so good you might just be pleasantly surprised. Dining room is noisy and tasteless, so consider ordering to go, if possible. Pros: Squid, Food, Cheap Cons: service, crowds, lack of ambience more

Great food; bad service 11/5/2003

I have eaten at Thien Hong quite a few times and the food is really good especially the fried salt and pepper squid, very impressive and the ca ko to, is really good. But there were a couple of times when I did ran into some bad food, for instance usually there salt and pepper squid is really good, but the one time I had ordered it, it seemed like the squid was still raw and not cooked thoroughly, but overall the food is great. On the downside the service is not top notch. The waiters were not attentive at all and water was not served at all and we had ask like 5 times! Also our orders were not taken correctly were always missing an item, and we had to keep asking for stuff, it was not served. Pros: variety of food, salt and pepper squid Cons: service more
