Thelma's BBQ Attitude 5/16/2012

My brothers took me to Thelma's for my Birthday and it started off very nice. When we first got there the line went real fast but the attitude of the owner Thelma is off the chain she is one of the meanest business owner I have ever known, the food was ok but none of that matters when she have a JACKED UP ATTITUDE! I will never ever go back and I will let my friends and family know not to ever go there again and beleive me they will not eat there. more

Whiners stay home... 4/22/2011

I read the reviews and knew without reservation that Thelma or her crew would not be rude to me. We walked into a place that was just as I expected. We waited in line with nice folks. We read the menu and signs during our short wait. One sign says no sevice if you are on your cell phone - amen! - and another says no sevice if your pants are sagging - double amen!! No extra bread for sale is clearly stated, too. In other words, order off the clear menu and be polite. This is not hard people! We did just what was expected of us and we received friendly service and amazingly good food. Our sandwiches were huge and priced right. The sliced beef was great, and loaded with sauce (deal with it!) and the catfish was crisp and delicious. Dirty rice was tasty, too. Thelma appears to appreciate your business and they serve great food. They expect their guests to have manners or dine elsewhere. Maybe this town would be better if more of us lived up to some basic expectations.... more

It was just a Penny!!!! 3/3/2011

My dad states he will not ever go in Thelma's again. Once he stopped to get him a bite to eat and needed ""just a penny"" and Thelma made him break a $10 bill just for a penny. I thought that was outrageous to say the least. I have heard countless of others tell me how rude she is. When you are dealing with the public and taking their money, you need to have some people skills and have a pleasant attitude in which she obviously does not have. more

Thelma's Mouth Loses Another Customer 12/2/2010

I don't care what race you are Thelma is rude as hell! I wouldn't go back and definitely wouldn't recommend to another human....don't care if she were giving those tough-ass ribs away for FREE. I'm a grown man and you have more rules posted on the wall then menu items! The place is a dump, the menu is hand written and it's no wonder why people can barely read it and the nerve of Thelma or Momma or Queen Niggatry to get an attitude that you aren't completely ready to order when you get to the ordering window of that roach motel. I'm black so this isn't a race issue. I'm telling you DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME GOING TO THIS DUMP. I hope the place burns down AGAIN and cancer crawls up her rude ass and kills her. My Take on Thelma's 9/26/2010

I just went there on Friday, September 24th. I ordered the fish dinner with okra & green beens. This was my first time going to the new location. I was not familiar with the menu at the time I ordered. The lady that took my order did not seem rude to me, if she were impatient, she did not show it. I have heard of the rumors of them being rude to customers. My husband goes there quite often and he has also told me of some of the events he's witnissed. All of the signs in the place will kind of intimidate you. I guess I was lucky on the day I went, but I did not take a long time deciding. I will definitely go back. But I do think that any business should take into consideration ALL of their customers & their location. It's a busy & historic part of town, small on the inside & very fast paste. So if you get someone that come into your establishment, they may not be used to how things work in there. more

Horrible and Rude 9/13/2010

Catfish and BBQ plates are delicious . Unfortunately, you may get treated like crap. If you are not treated badly just sit and wait and the customer ahead of you or behind you will be treated horrible. Don't go. I went in 8/2010. We 2 times before about 3years ago. I do not go because of her rudeness of the workers and Thelma. It is unnecessary and makes for a bad dining experience. I will probably try her again in 10 years and I live in Houston. She has horrible people skills. more

I don't know why people are bring up the race. The first time my family went to Thelma's, my hubby wented the ribs but she said that it will take awhile, so he just ordered the beef. We ate our very good food and as we were getting in our car, she came out side to give us a order of ribs FREE. NOW, WHO HAVE YOU EVER HAD THAT DONE TO THEM AT ANY OTHER PLACE??? WE LOVE THELMA'S. WE HAVE BEEN THERE ALL DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY. LUNCH TIME, SHE IS ALL BUSINESS. SHE KNOW THAT PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TIME TO PLAY AND THATS WHY PEOPLE STILL GO. SLOW TIMES OF THE DAY, I HAVE SEEN SHE TAKE TO CUSTOMERS AND SHE IS VERY FRIENDLY. more

What's with the tude Thelma 9/30/2009

Thelma, what is your problem? Why are you SO rude? I've been in there a few times and thought maybe you were just having a bad day, but this thing goes deeper than that. It seems you are absolutely miserable...at least that is what is projected by your attitude to your customers, and not just your attitude to the white customers. You're obviously not prejudiced when it comes to being rude to ANY race. Thelma, chill out and be nice. You've got something people want and that is FOOD, GOOD FOOD!!! Don't make people lose their appetites because you've got to cop that sister girl attitude you have going on. I won't be back until I hear you have redeemed yourself. Worst Customer Service Ever!!!! 6/19/2009

Thelma BBQ has the worst customer service ever!!! I had know idea what I was getting myself into. First of all the wait is super long. I waited in line for 30 minutes only to be kicked out once it was my time to order. Yes, kicked out!! Walked up to ask the person at the window(the owner) and ask what was the best thing on the menu because this was my first time coming. She told me I should have been looking at the menu instead of talking on the phone. Then I stated I did look at the menu and didnt know what to order. I stated that she didnt have to be so rude and she cursed at me and then stated that I could spend my money somewhere else and showed me the door. As if I didnt know where the door was, the place is a match box. Try to support black owned businesses and look how you are treated. Themla simple doesnt care about customer service. Apparently neither do her customers. Will never step foot in there AGAIN! Pros: Nothing Cons: Customer Service more

worst place for bbq 5/21/2009

i had wanted to order a 3 meat plate with 2 types of beef and ribs, was told i couldnt.i feel if im paying for it then whats the problem...anyway..i ordered the sliced beef, ribs and sausage and it was the WORST bbq i have ever had in my life..i was still tasteing it the next day..the beef and the ribs was tough as shoe leather and the sausage while it had a good flavor was cheap and def not all beef...if i could rate this place a neg star if i could..dont see how anybody thinks that this greasy mess/slop is good bbq..somebody please send the health dept over there cause im sure baised on what i seen there are most def some health code violations...AND PLEASE SOMEBODY TEACH THEM HOW TO BBQ.. i guess to the crackheads in the hood thats mighty good eats but not to me and i grew up in the hood.... Thelma's link sandwich is about as good as her menu gets. Her mom makes her desserts, which the pecan pie is a delictible treat. Either way, if you can finish a whole sandwich, you will have to take the pie home with you to eat later. The setting is a rather modest small living/dining room of an old house with all walls removed. more

PLEASE, LISTEN UP! THIS RESTAURANT HAS GREAT FOOD; BUT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS BEYOND THE WORST I HAVE EVER, EVER EXPERIENCE. I HAVE RESOLVED NOT TO GO TO THIS RESTAURANT, AFTER GOING ABOUT THE FOURTH OR FIFTH TIME AND GEARING MYSELF UP TO WHAT I KNEW WOULD BE A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Rude customer service, poor BBQ 12/19/2008

I went to this place with a friend after we read good reviews on it. She went before i did, because she couldn't wait from anticicpation. She got the chopped beef sandwich, and said it was very big and overdrowned with sweet sauce. She was not impressed, but wanted to go back to try the fish, since it had good reviews also. Disappointing brisket, sugar barbecue sauce, charged for food that wasn't served 11/26/2008

Disappointing - tough brisket, sugary bbq sauce. Plus, they ripped me off. First, I tried to order a three meat plate - chopped beef, sliced beef, and chicken, and she refused to let me order two types of beef. I think she has some sort of mental issue with it. Whatever, so I ordered sliced beef, sausage, and chicken, and an order of ribs. Well, after sitting down and eating a few bites I noticed that there was no chicken. After paying $24 for a meal, I expect to get everything I paid for. Conveniently, there is a sign (among many signs) that says something like ""check your order before you walk away"". Well, in retrospect that is probably a way for them to steal from customers - sorry, you didn't check your order, your problem. Pros: Shack-like atmosphere. Rustic. Good quality food 11/16/2008

I been to Thelma's several times. I love Thelma's BBQ meat only. They make one of the best BBQ ribs, brisket, and link in Houston. Their sides are ok I had better. I have to warn you they have one of the worse customer service ever. The staffs there are not friendly people but it doesn't stop me from keep coming back because I like their BBQ meats and so I come order it to go then leave. horrible place!!! 9/22/2008

what can i say , to start off , there is no parking and second the place can seat probably no more than 10 people and the condition of the place is horrible, its surprising that it is still standing, its dirty and old and almost even scary !!! and to top it off , they double charged my credit card and wouldnt refund me my money and even had to put a claim in to my bank!! more
