Great Place to Watch Hockey and Play Board Games 2/28/2012

I've been here a couple times with some Canadian friends, and each time has been great. There's a great atmosphere here, and not the people aren't pretentious like other places in Houston. They have a wide variety of board games, Canadian beer, and HOCKEY! If you're a hockey fan, and you live in Houston, you're doing yourself a disservice by not frequenting this place. Even if you don't like Hockey, The Maple Leaf Pub is a great place for after hours to hang out with friends or co-workers. more

Hockey, Girls and games everywhere... 4/7/2011

Best little ol' pub in Texas. Lot's to do and very nice folks too. And the staff and owners are spectacular.. Pub Heaven for me!! more

You gotta love the Maple Leaf 9/14/2009

I was glad to see the Maple Leaf toping the list of bars in Houston. I can't agree more! This is the best place to go out with a group of friends and talk to others at the bar. Great staff....hodge podge of people there that usually aren't pretending to be too cool. And for some reason I always walk out sauced and a nice hangover in the morning = good time in my book! Pros: What a bar should be Cons: its a Canadian bar!!!! ;0) more

Convenient spot, good drafts 2/14/2009

I have some friends that live in the Calais directly across the street from ""The Leaf"" as they call it. Would rate 4.5...For a Friday night I noticed the following...individual tables with 4-5 people playing board games, chatting it up, generaly having a good time. Others seemed to be regulars at the bar, we opted to throw some darts. Stells Artois was served in corresponding glass (nice touch) and promptly, I might add by their only male server at the time. Pros: Location, Windows, Service Cons: none during the week or the occasional Friday night more

Best Midtown Pub 2/12/2009

Great Neighborhood Pub. The bartenders obviously know their stuff. Late night pizza offering is the best. Pros: Great casual neighborhood bar Cons: parking - what else is new in mid-town and they atleast have a parking lot more

Favorite Bar in Houston 2/4/2009

This is easily my favorite bar in Houston. It's very non-assuming and completely comfortable. You fit in if you're wearing a suit and tie or if you chilling in shorts. The bartender always remembers my drink order even if it's been a while since my previous visit. The mixed drinks are stout and are moderately priced considering the bar is located in midtown. Pros: Parking & Service Cons: Patio isn't that large more

Great Hockey, Great Service, Great Place 1/29/2009

I was really disheartened to read a few of the reviews. I am not related to the owner, but I have visited the Maple Leaf Pub many times during the hockey season. I was so ecstatic last year to find out that there is an actual hockey bar in Houston. I made a couple of new friends there and even ran into some old friends. The staff is always friendly and the service is wonderful! The owner is a really great guy too! Pros: Hockey! It is a comfortable atmosphere. more

Good hockey bar eh? 1/26/2009

Well, hockey games only have 3 stars, so that will have to do for now. Besides, just made my first visit prior to the Aeros game 1/23. Alas it was the all star break and the lame Rockets were throwing another one away. The Labatt Blues were nice and cold, and $3.50 is a bargain compared to the $7-8 at the Toyota Center. Selection of other brews was impressive, I'll have some of my other faves from home next time. Being alone, I sat at the bar and can see the point about the limited view if not all screens are on the same channel. Pros: Convenient location for me Cons: None readily apparent in a first visit more

this place is worthless! stay away! 12/17/2008

I've actually been here many times because it is the only way for me to follow my favorite hockey team. Nevertheless, this place has not shown any signs of improvement over that time. The jukebox has a bunch of old CDs in it. The music is not loud enough. Most of the other customers are old men. The gender ratio is usually about 9 males for every female (and that one female is usually unattractive anyway). The drinks are overpriced. It is at a noisy intersection. If all that weren't bad enough, there's one bartender named Amanda who has a serious attitude problem. Pros: access to all NHL games Cons: everything else more

One of the better bars in the area! 6/26/2008

I've been here a handful of times, and have had nothing but a good time every time. I only require a friendly staff, plenty of beers to choose from, decent prices and no pretention. So far, so good! Pros: a comfortable bar with no delusions of grandeur Cons: windows are too big!!! more

everybody knows your name 6/6/2008

I love the maple leaf my husband and I were there over the weekend to watch NHL playoffs, and we popped in last night with a group of friends. I love the friendly atmosphere it is definitely not like the other bars in midtown. Scott and the other staff rock they are always so friendly and really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. On busy nights you have to understand that you are not the only patron at the bar, and you may have to wait a few minutes for a drink, but that's the case at any bar when it's busy. The staff always seems to work very hard on busy nights to make sure eveyone gets taken care of. As for other reviews talking about the TV setup I really don't understand what they're talking about they have 5 very nice large plasma TVs and I've never had a problem seeing any TV when I've been there. I have to give kudos to the owners for making it such a relaxing comfortable friendly environment! Pros: atmosphere, staff, and parking Cons: can't think of any more

The service is so MUCH better now! Great job! 5/21/2008

I've been to the Maple Leaf Pub several times because I'm a huge college hockey and NHL fan. On weekday nights when the bar isn't as packed, service is usually average. That is, if you are ready for a fresh drink/refill, you can either order one from the bar with minimal wait or catch the attention of a wandering staff and place your order. However, on any given weekend, all bets are off. First, the bar gets extremely packed. So, attempting to get the attention of someone behind the bar warrants the use of rescue flares. Next, the presence of any staff on the floor checking on the patrons is nearly non-existent. It's ashame, MLP is one of the few pubs in Houston that offers so many Canadian brews, yet it's very trying to just place order to get one. With more bar staff and waitresses, MLP would be much approved. Pros: Hockey, Canadian Beer Cons: Needs bigger flat screens and more seating more

i would not recommend to anyone I know 5/18/2008

me and a few friends go out two to three times a month to try out different spots and thought that The Maple Leaf Pub looked like a good place to go. (well we were wrong) the atmospher of this place seemed really nice, there are board games to play and the staff seemed friendly enough. all was good untill we got ready to pay the tab and leave......... my friends boyfriend went to the bar to close us out and me and my friend went outside. when he came out he was pis*ed, the tab was $30 for 3 drinks and no they were'nt even top shelf. my friends boyfriend had a beer she had a s*x on the beach and I a long island ice tea or for better words a glass of ice water because thats what it tasted like. my friends drink was bearly biggiger than a shot, I know s*x on the beach can be either a shot or a drink but we asked for the drink and not the shot two sips and she was done. back to the tab... the blond at the bar charged us for each shot she put in the drink WTF? we were at a pub not the hilton. when we left I called the pub back and asked how much thier long islands were and i was told $7 when i told the man how much we were charged i didnt even have to tell him our name he already knew. Hmmm??? well he said he would refund the difference which was cool but why were we over charged in the first place dont this place train there employees befor the let them interact with the customers? was it because we didnt look like her average clintel ? or was it because she was running short on cash and needed some extra gas money????? who knows and who cares she knew what she was doing and it was not right if you dont fit this pubs "" class of people "" then i would not recommend it. would never go again. Pros: ughhhh???????? Cons: liked the board games more

DO not Go here. 5/18/2008

BAD! BAD! BAD!.I, my boyfriend and a friend of ours went to the maple leaf on May 10. We just wanted to have a few drinks and relax. The place looked nice and we did like the atmosphere. My boyfriend ordered a beer which is the only drink you should order. I ordered a ""S*x on the Beach"" which the bartender must not have known how to make. She gave me a shot of a drink. You can google this drink (which I did before I wrote this) and see how the drink should be made. My friend got a long island ice tea and she said she didn't like it either. But you know what. We weren't really mad, we just didn't order any more and just hung out. We just thought this is not a place to order mix drinks from. No biggie. So all we ordered was one beer, and 2 mix drinks. My boyfriend went to go take care of the bill. It came up to $30. WTF? The bartender was charging for every item that was in the mixed drinks. The beer was $4.00 and my drink was may be $10.00 and the long island was $16.00. My boyfriend asked her if she was serious about the bill and she just smiled and said yes. He paid and said some words and left. My friend & I were in the parking lot waiting and he told us about it. We were really in shock. Part of us felt we just got suckered and maybe this happen because we didn't ask how much the drinks were gonna be before we orderd. My friend called the place up and asked how much was a long island. the guy who answer said $7.00 and then she told him we just left and were changed $30. He must have looked at the bill and said ""oh , were are going to refund you $13.50. I do not believe this was a mistake and our checks were confused with someone elses. This bartender did this on purpose. Why were we singled out? We weren't drunk and acting stupid. She just really thought she could rip us off. Maybe pocket some of the money. I do know we were the only latinos there. But I don't want to play the race card. But just stating the fact. Do not go to this place. Pros: Parking Cons: everything more

Response to Htowncoog 5/8/2008

I have not yet visited but I heard about this through another hockey fan and then read the review from Htowncoog. I now rate this place as a 5, I was planning on catching the Fri/Sat night playoff games but have been motivated to go tonight. You can watch the rockets at any bar or restaurant, people who have passion for the game of hockey need a place to enjoy a game, and I found it. I gained some serious respect from the response given. Look forward to the experience tonight. Pros: I'll get back to you Cons: I'll get back to you more

Not a true sports bar - Other ""onetime"" reviewers probably employees or associated with owner. 5/3/2008

I was there to watch the hometown Rockets play the Jazz in the playoffs and to my surprise when I got there, only one tv was tuned into the Rockets game and the rest were showing Dallas Hockey. Ok, I get it, this is a ""canadian"" bar so of course because it's a ""canadians"" bar, if they show anything else besides hockey it wouldn't be a ""canadian"" bar right? Those ""canadians"" must all be stereotypical one cell-brain creatures who can't appreciate anything besides hockey i take it *sarcasm*. Pros: Free well lit parking, friendly staff (although a little slow), clean Cons: trying too hard with their hockey/canadian gimmick. no HDTV's - and not enough TV's more

Cool sports bar, especially for hockey 2/20/2008

Cool sports bar. We went there last night to watch hockey. They have several flat-panel TVs mounted on the walls, several choices of draft beer as well as lots of bottled beer and mixed drinks. There are dart boards and a hockey game machine and some coin operated touch screens to play between events. I'll be back to the Maple Leaf Pub. Pros: Good, friendly sports bar Cons: It would be nice if they served food more

All around GREAT pub 10/15/2007

First and foremost, I have always received the best service from the bartenders at the Maple Leaf, particularly Curtis. He has only served me twice and I still remember his name. They are all attentive, prompt, friendly, and all around just memorable bartenders. The juke box RULES. It is a roomy bar with interesting, friendly patrons. Dart boards didn't hurt, either. However, I want my emphasis to remain on the service. I feel like it's the most determining factor no matter where you are. Let's put it this way- I will keep filling out applications until I get to work alongside those people! Pros: everything! it's even next to a pizza joint if you get hungry Cons: ? nothing. more

Great Place 9/13/2007

I went to the Maple Leaf last night for my boyfriend birthday with a group of friends. Needless to say we all had an excellent time. It has a great relax feel not to loud you were able to have conversations with everyone. Props to the bartender he was great and we will all be back for Hockey season. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: music more
