Great Place to Celebrate 50th Anniversary Dinner 7/29/2010

My son arranged for my wife and I to have a pleasent dinner here before a theater engagement as part of our 50 wedding anniversary weekend celebration in NYC.\r \r He arranged everything with Ari one of the owners and the evening went smoother than a vintage Rolex.\r \r From the Champeign start to the after dinner drinks it all flowed smoothly and was a smooth show.\r \r Thanks to everyone involved from the Chef, our waitress and Ari. \r \r ARB10 Pros: Excelent food & service, Great management, Cons: a little noisy at times but not a poblem more

My favorite Restaurant 5/11/2010

I can't believe the choices in their menu. They had a cheeseburger that suprised me on how delicious it can be. Very attentive staff. Great crab cakes. I just would like everyone to go and enjoy. Pros: The food and service more

Consistently solid (very good food, good service) 9/23/2009

I work very close to Thalia, and it's just a no-brainer. This is one of the few places I know of that has been around for a while (at least for the 6 years I've been working in the area), and that hasn't gone downhill, or lost their enthusiasm to deliver good food and service at a reasonable price.\r \r I have so many favorite dishes here: the duxelle ravioli with mushrooms, the crabcake sandwich, the braised short rib.\r \r They also have a takeout place right around the corner, and the quality is just as good.\r \r Whomever manages this place really has their act together.\r \r The ambiance in the restaurant is also very nice. Perfectly soft lighting, and the tables are not too close together. Pros: Consistency in level of service and quality more

Really tasty food in a nice theatre district restaurant 10/19/2008

My husband and I ate here after a matinee show and had really excellent food. Our reservation was for 5:30 but we were able to be seated early (restaurant was still empty). The service was very prompt and polite. I had a tasty beet and goat cheese salad and really delicious, well-cooked skate with vegetables; my husband had a fresh mozzarella appetizer (good cheese, so-so tomatoes, but it is mid-October) and the most amazing gnocchi. So light and soft and fragile, they must have been half cheese. Delicious! A nice shared dessert and two glasses of wine for about $100. The menu might not be earthy-shatteringly innovative -- no foams or infusions or miso anything -- but really a good value for well-prepared food in the theatre district. Nice ambience too. more

Fine Sunday Brunch 9/14/2008

My family and I ate there before a recent Sunday matinee. Given how expensive brunch has gotten, it is refreshing to find one with meals under $15 that include juice/mimosa. While there are better places at twice the cost, it was a refreshing, plesant way to start the day on Broadway. Interesting dishes included a fine crab meat and asparagus omelette, vanilla french toast and great banana and strawberry pancakes. Highly recommended for a reasonable brunch spot in midtown! Pros: Resaonable brunch, some different menu items Cons: Staff a bit young, but pleasant. more

Good service and drinks 7/30/2008

I went here for Restaurant Week so I got a cheaper deal. The portions are pretty small, but that's what you expect for fine dining in NY. I enjoyed the drinks and the service was impeccable. Pros: Very nice atmosphere and great location for Theater dining Cons: Expensive more

Good gourmet food, service was a bit off. Still recommend it. 4/18/2008

My wife and I ate there pre-show and they had some glitches in the service but we would go back for another try. We ordered a raw sampler, three appetizers and a side dish. We told them to bring them in any order as soon as they were ready. With tiny tables, they brought out EVERYTHING at once. I sent back the raw to chill out until there was room and we were swamped with the rest of the stuff. This kind of thing in inexcusable and if the stuff didn't look so good, I would have left. The waiter needs to have better control over the staging of courses and the food delivery guys need to be better trained. Onto the good stuff! The mussels, mozzarella and the raw plate were really good. The menu looks very interesting and we will be back to taste some more. Pros: Food, ambiance Cons: service glitches more

Spoiled Juice.. Mediocre Food... Horrible Management 4/6/2008

I went to to Thalia for brunch, ordered an omelette with asparagus and crab meat. It was more like a flap of egg with cold crab meat, asparagus and tomato inside. This brunch entree comes with a choice of drink.. wine, fresh squeezed juice. I ordered a ""fresh squeezed"" grapefruit juice, when it came it tasted fermented. Disgustingly acidic. When i asked the waiter about this funny taste, he recognized it has gone bad, took my drink and quickly came back with a new one. When i asked him if it was fresh squeezed, it says it may have been fresh squeezed an hour ago. A juice does NOT ferment in 1 hour! When asked to speak to the manager, he admits the juices are squeezed last night and he simply said he doesn't know what went wrong, that the entire container of which the juice came from is okay. He even says the bartender tastes the juice in the morning! He implied that I don't know what i'm talking about. So he just said ""I don't know"". \r \r This just disgusts me in how the management does not even acknowledge their wrong doing, and i had to suffer through a disgusting taste of spoiled juice.\r \r I would not wish this experience upon anyone. I went to this restaurant based on nice reviews.I expected quality food, because its not a ""cheap"" place. But i don't know what is so nice about it other than decor. Pros: Decor more

Best Food in theater District 10/8/2007

This is an underrated restuarant I feel it isa find and better than some famous more well known restaurants in NY It is my favorite resturant for the quality and selection of the food the decor is beautiful and the service is professional The chef is excellent and the food is mainly Americal Gourment My favorilte dish is the scallops but there is only good food here. Pros: food more

Great Atmosphere, Mediocre Menu 7/25/2007

All of the greatness of this place lies in its ambiance; great lighting, chic decor, classy yet unpretentious atmosphere. The service was also very attentive and the seating prompt. \r \r However, you'd never come here for the food. Though the food itself was great, the menu selection is pretty mediocre and limited. Nothing on the menu really jumped out at me, which isn't a great thing when you're paying $20+ for an entree with no side.\r \r So, come here for the great atmosphere, for a nice place to lounge and have good drinks, but don't come here for excellent food. Pros: Fantastic ambiance, classy and chic atmosphere, good drinks, good service Cons: Bad menu selection more

Great seafood, Reasonable Prices 7/15/2007

Great food. Everyone in our party of six enjoyed their meal. The prices were quite reasonable for NYC. The only negative was that the bathroom wasn't very clean Pros: Food, Cost Cons: Bathroom more

Good food, but super slow 7/5/2007

I had to go here for a lunch meeting and the food was good, but the service was pretty bad. They were acting like they were really busy, but in fact, the restaurant was nearly empty. Since we only saw our waiter about 2 times we had to ask the other wait staff when we needed something. He even took forever to take the check. So, the food is good, but the service is slow! Pros: Good food Cons: SUPER slow service more

Nice Decor.. food not that great 6/4/2007

My husband and I went for pre-theater dinner. I informed the waitress that we were going to a show and the food came out very quickly. The appetizers were good, my husband had the cream of mushroom soup and I have the mozz & tomato salad. Our entrees were below average. I had the crab cakes, do not recommend. My husband had the strip steak, he hated the way it was seasoned. I would not recommend. Get a slice of pizza at Ray's before your show and go someplace not in Time Sq/ Theather District for a late dinner. Pros: fast service, decor Cons: food!!!!! more

beautiful space, bar and dining area really nice 5/24/2007

Thalia is eye candy both from the street and being on the inside. Towering ceiling throughout, beautiful lighting and a really well designed layout. The menu, some call it new American, I guess that is about right. There are choices on the menu for just about anyone: meat or vege lover. The food is good, but it doesn't impress. It's reasonably priced for the city and the area. We didn't get the WOW we were hoping for. Ordered the side of Thalia fries which we thought might be spiced or otherwise special since they put their own name to the side dish. But they were just freakin fries. I don't even think there was salt on them. So I can't suggest ordering them -- unless you want to spend big bucks on fries. Service was very good and the wine was generous. Pros: beautiful room, great location for theater Cons: competent, not extraordinary food more

WORST SERVICE AT CAFE 4/27/2007

I have gone to Thalia cafe every day for the past maybe 5 years - and now every morning a large group of high school kids are in there, and they (the employees) do not pay attention to regular customers and I WILL NEVER STOP IN HERE AGAIN. it is insane and ridiculous and highly unprofessional. Pros: nothing Cons: SERVICE IS HORRIBLE more

Fantastic - one place that has it all, and does it all well 2/26/2007

This place really does have it all.. \r I live down the street and have done everything from business meetings to a late night with the girls there... the actual restaurant is beautiful but not overdone. \r \r things you have to try: the lobster eggs benedict at brunch, the scallops and tiramisu at dinner, and the burger if you are in the lounge area.\r \r thalia is a 'must try' in midtown!! Pros: lounge apps, prices Cons: Only brunch on sat / sun more

NEVER GO HERE 2/20/2007

Never go here!!!!!! This place is the worst. This place has waiters will listen to your conversations, and if you don't tip like 20 to 25% of the bill the managers will come to you and tell you that you did not leave enought and that you are not welcomed and they will be rude and nasty to you. I will be sure to tell everyone and post everywhere NEVER to go to that place. It is awful and has bad employees and owners. Cons: waiters listening to you conversaion, rude nasty managers more
