Consistently Good Indian Food 11/13/2011

BIG Indian food lover here, yes I am. Now I will prefice this and tell you that if it was my wife writing this it would not be as enticing, she did not have the experience I did. The place itself is designed very tastefully, not like your average sparce Indian restaurant. Lighting was set to evening mood and was very calming. The funny thing is that the place is in a tiny strip mall and they have valet parking. Next door is a 7-11 so being a NY'rker I parked on the street. The whole valet thing here in L.A. is amusing to the point of revulsion. But I digress. We were immediately greeted and seated. The place was not full, but not empty either. Just the right amount of people. Our waiter was very nice and accomodating. So now the food. Ordered the veg. samosas, which were very nice. Not overpowering, with just the right amount of spice. Now don't get me wrong, I love spicy food, both spiced and hot, but this was a nice opener. We especially enjoyed the spicy (Hot) pickled carrots. Main course was the chicken tikka masala, and lamb korma. What I loved about the chicken was that it was creamy and had a smokey aroma from the fact that they first roast the chicken in the tandoori oven and then cook it in the sauce. One observation about the texture of the chicken, it was a little harder than I would have liked. My wife felt so even more than I, but the flavor was very much to my liking. The lamb was soft and spicy (Hot) which I loved. The spinach sauce that it was cooked in was just spot on. Oh yeah, also had garlic naan. I love this stuff, can't get enough of it. Overall I had a really nice time and the food was just the way I like it. Will have to go there alone next time since the Mrs. likes clay oven better over this place. Which reminds me...if you are even in NYC you have to try the Rose of India. If I didn't write about it in the past I will try to do so soon. more

Great food, but their customer service can be a little better 2/5/2009

I love this place. They have such great food, but their customer service NEEDS to be improved. I love to go for the food, but I'm sometimes not in the mood to deal with the staff. They are very pushy, rude, and very anxious to get you out of there (not as though they are so busy.) They just want to get you out of there for some reason. I have even taken food to go, PURPOSELY, so I don?t deal with their staff, and it just wasn't the same as dining in there. Pros: great food Cons: horrible customer service more

great service and food 1/20/2009

When we arrived we used the valet service (no problems). We were seated promptly and ordered lamb samosas, chicken tikka masala, matar paneer, garlic naan and rice. more

Obnoxious customer service 12/31/2008

We went to this restaurant on New years eve and had absolutely the most horrendous experience. If you're too busy to cater to customers sitting in your restaurant, you need to hire more staff or get the staff you have to move their butts (there were certainly enough staff on hand, they just seemed to be heavily sedated or stoned and had trouble acknowledging our existence). We had to wave frantically and shout at times to attract the staff's attention. To begin with, we were well ready with our order, but had to wait about 15 minutes to attract the ""customer service"" guy to send a waiter our way to take our order! Bizzare. This worthy's only job seemed to be bugging customers and engaging them in inane and inordinately lengthy conversations. We were already fuming. Then, a dopey waiter turns up to take our order, and forgets to get the hot water I ordered (I had a bad throat). I had to again go through frantic-wave to get my hot water. Food arrived, was delicious, compliments to the chef, no complaints in that department. We decided to have dessert. So we again went through frantic-wave. No response. Nary an acknowledgement of our presence. 15,20,30 minutes passed. Absolutely mind boggled, I practically shouted the ""customer service"" guy to our table, and gave him a piece of my mind. Told him that we had changed our mind about dessert, and would he please send the check asap. To which the guy had the cheek to remark that ""I am not a waiter. i will send you a waiter. Lucky, please attend to these guys. they are complaining"" Wtf!! By now we had lost it, and I went over to the big turbaned owner, and made a formal complaint. The guy came over, and apologised, more in the spirit of ""I dont want a scene"" rather than ""I am genuinely sorry what can i do to make up"". We left a $0 tip and left with a sour taste in our mouths. Pros: food Cons: ""customer service"" (esp. if you are not American) more

Great place for lunch or dinner on any given day/night. Very casual space. Great food. Good service. Good value. My husband and I have been tried many Indian restaurants and my husband's favorite dish is, of course, the popular chicken tikka masala.... and he claims that Taste Of India makes the BEST chicken tikka masala... and I may just have to agree..... =] more

best food and service 12/7/2008

I was really surprised to see nefgative comments for Taste Of India. It is the best Indian restaurant I have ever seen in LA. There food are very very good and consistently good. I have been to india and had Indian Cuisine there. I feel no difference. Even tastier and healthier than what I had in India. There food are great, good service and manager""s personal attention to what is being delivered to customer had impressed me a lot. If I ever want to go to any Indian restaurant that will be TASTE OF INDIA and TASTE OF INDIA only, where Indian cuisine is at its best!!!!! more

Bad customer service 6/16/2007

I just had the most bizarre experience at Taste of India today. I walked in an asked an older gentleman in a waiter's uniform if I could place a carryout order. He said, Hello. I said hello back and asked if I could please place an order. He did not answer me at all. I thought maybe he didn't speak English, but I asked again, and he just looked over my head like I wasn't talking. I waited by the bar for a while, holding a take out menu. I was absolutely starving, and had to be in Calabasas in 25 mins, so I didn't want to drive anywhere else. I sat down at a table, assuming a waiter would take my order. 10 minutes passed, and no one acknowleged me or took my order. The waiter stood 5 feet from me and competly ignored me. I was the only person in the entire restaurant! I could understand if they were super busy or it was almost closing time. I finally walked up to someone speaking on the phone and, when they finished their call, placed an order. It was the Vegetarian lunch special, just curry and a salad. I was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, it took 25, and I was the only customer there. Needless to say, I was late to my appt, and didn't get a chance to eat. I used to eat at the champagne brunch all the time 3 years ago. I don't know if the ownership has changed or if I just happened to get a shift of trainees or something, but I won't be back. If one person had apologized for the wait or explained why the staff ignored me I wouldn't be so irritated. Pros: food is pretty good Cons: Bizarre wait staff more

If you love a low key, hidden gem... this is a must. 1/30/2007

My husband and I have been visiting Taste of India on a frequent basis for the past six years after receiving the recommendation from a neighbor at the time. Although I have been dubious about divulging our well kept secret, they do afterall deserve the recognition. I was initially warned to not let the strip mall locale deter me from discovering what awaited inside and I am so happy that we listened! Being a lover of Indian food, I was delighted to discover the friendly and knowledgeable staff, a sufficient menu and the BEST Indian food I have ever had (the Chicken Mahkni is our absolute favorite). Although for some there might be perceived down-sides to dining in a ""strip mall location"" (it is definitely not glamorous), for us the upsides are numerous; the small and casual environment is perfect for quiet and leisurely dinner conversation; We have never required a reservation for dinner and the staff is always friendly and willing to assist with menu items to suit your palate; Finally, the value remains one of the best around and the parking (free of valet at this point) is rarely difficult to find. Pros: Relaxed Environment, Delicious Food and Friendly Service! Cons: Small Parking Lot more

Lovely Owners - Fantastic Service - Take their Advice on What to Order! 7/9/2006

For nearly five years my family and I have been going to TASTE OF INDIA. Delicious food, served by a warm and wonderful staff in a simple but peaceful environment. The owner and the waiter offer wonderful suggestions about what to order to expand your knowledge of Indian food. Every time I take their advice I end up with an utterly FANTASTIC meal. Highly reccomend. Pros: Service and Food are Fantastic Cons: Okay, so it's in a strip mall but GET OVER IT! more

I wouldn't go anywhere else... 7/2/2006

I went on 30 days vacation to India 7 years ago. We visited different cities and never ate in the same restaurants twice. Food overthere was delicious and after coming back, I frantically looked for an Indian restaurant. Taste of India is where I go when I miss the flavors. I've been eating there (or ordered for delivery) for the last 7 years. I've tried other Indian restaurants in L.A. but so far this beats them all. The staff is very friendly and they get to know you. Pros: Yummy! Cons: You'll over eat! more

best indian food in los angeles county! 6/17/2006

Hands down the tastiest and most authentic indian food in all of Los Angeles. It's a shame to see others write poor reviews, I suspect they have gotten so used to the Hollywood style Indian that's more commonplace, they wouldn't know real Indian food if it was poured over their head. The managers & owners get to know their customers and are always friendly & helpful. I have been going to Taste of India for 7 years and can't recommend it enough. It become's everyone's favorite Indian place when I take them there. I found it when I lived close by, but now I live by downtown LA, and still drive there as often as I can for the wonderful food. Pros: amazing selection, cuisine, and service Cons: unnecessary valet more

Awful-Everything tastes like BBQ sauce 3/17/2006

This is the worst Indian Food I have ever eaten. We ordered a selection of 5 dishes. All of them looked the same and tasted the same -the color and taste of BBQ sauce. Every dish was sweet with a sickening tang. The only differance was the meat or vegtable in the dish. Really bad!! more

Very slow & expensive delivery 1/20/2005

It took them 1 hour and 47 minutes to deliver food less than 1 mile. The guy is coming to the door right now. I don't care how good the food is. It was expensive for Indian and the service was horrible. more
