Bland food. Unprofessional service. 12/22/2006

I am Indian, and I love good Indian food. The food at this place is the most tasteless food that I had tasted since quite a while. I also got a taste for the most unprofessional service ever in a restaurant, at this place. Advice to non-Indians, this restaurant spoils the good taste of Indian food. Avoid this place!! more

Nice, but not the best... 3/16/2006

Taj is good, but far from the best Tampa has to offer in the way of Northern Indian cuisine. To get the most of your experience at Taj, I recommend the lunch buffet. It’s affordable and offers a good selection of entrees and extras. The buffet includes vegetarian choices, in addition to beef and chicken, and features plenty of nan and pickled delights—I love their pickled carrots with mustard seeds. There’s also a dessert of delightfully spiced rice pudding (kheer) on the buffet. I find most of the meals at Taj are spiced to the western palate—meaning not too hot. If you are ordering entrees, rather than selecting from the buffet, request the spice level of your choice and they’ll meet your need. If you're a fan of sweet mango lassi, Taj makes a great one. The wait staff is adequate but not overly friendly. I find the atmosphere pleasant and noise is never a problem, as it is usually quiet enough for causal conversation to easily be heard even at the busiest time of the day. The main reason I’m not giving Taj more stars, is the taste of the entrees. The food lacks a depth and robust taste that I would expect. Dishes featuring paneer (a homemade whole milk cheese) are especially disappointing as their version is dull and tasteless. more

so-so indian food 11/20/2005

I wasnt impressed with the food at Taj. Most of it was bland and lacked flavor. The food is overpriced as well. We had to spnd extra for a plate of rice! They have a lunch buffet that is also overpriced. Food really isnt high quality. The naan bread is good though-i will give them that much more

surprising Bad experience 9/28/2005

I tried this restaurant for the first time with my roommate several years ago. We waited almost 10 minutes to be seated even though several people walked by us and saw us standing there. Plus the Indian family who came in after us was seated first. We waited another 10 minutes for a waiter to ask us if we wanted a drink (the indian family already had theirs by the time he got there) and another 10 minutes for the drinks to come. We ordered food-chicken curry for me and tandoori chicken for my friend. First thing we noticed was that no rice came with the dinner. It took another 6 or 7 minutes to flag down our waiter and when he got to our table, he informed us that we had to pay 2 dollars extra for a dish of rice. The food was ok, I guess it would have tasted better if we werent so upset at the service. We left and no, we didnt tip and the waiter actually came outside after us! It was kinda scary but my roomie told him that the service sucked and that is why we didnt tip. I went back one time after that...several years later and the service still wasnt the best...plus the food is far more expensive than other indian restaraunts more

Lousy service 9/3/2005

Northern Indian food that is passable. You cannot go wrong with any of their entrees. The problem with this joint is the very poor service. The waiters are arrogant, and slow. But, with any Indian restaurant, the lower your expectations for prompt service, the better... more

The Taj is great. 8/26/2005

The Taj is a great place for Indian, something there's not nearly enough of in the area by a long shot. They have all the standards, good nan bread, chickem korma.... The vindaloo is a personal favorite and not to be missed. Also they have a couple of good indian beers that everyone should try at least once! more

Great spicy food 8/5/2005

If you are a fan of Indian food. You must go to Taj Indian Cuisine. This restaurant features all of the Indian dishes you can think off at a great price. The best value for the place is its daily lunch buffet at fewer than 10 dollars. It serves all the main dishes (meat and veggie) in the buffet. Downfall: Need a lot of mints after the food. more
