Excellent! Best In The City! 12/19/2010

I went to Tabla for the first time for a late lunch in June, right after my high school graduation. We sat upstairs and it is one of the most beautiful ineriors at a restaurant I have seen (and I've traveled all over the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as to Japan and Great Britain). The food was sublime! The crab cake was the best I have ever eaten! I will certainly try to go again before it closes! more

Not what we expected 10/12/2009

I went here with my (Indian) parents, and my father has unrealistic expectations for a restaurant that is labelled fusion. Still, my mother and I were totally ready to give it a chance, but for vegetarian people I would not recommend this food. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but a goat cheese / palak panner pizza was just weird and didn't taste good, only one or two parts of all of our dishes lived up to the price and ambiance. I expected it to be more exciting, but all of our food sounded unexpected and interesting on the menu, but then when it came time to eat it nothing was really too good... more

Bad Food 5/14/2009

I was a bit disappointed with the food and also the quality. I heard raving reviews and i took my staff to celebrate. The service was very slow and food a bit disappointing. more

Interesting 5/10/2009

Went there to celebrate my husband's birthday with friends. Getting a reservation was relatively easy and the staff was very accommodating about the time and number of guests. The cuisine was very interesting. Cannot call it Indian but definitely had some Indian accents. I would recommend adding a bit more kick to the flavors... they lay very much in the background. I loved my crabcake, my husband's naan-ini and my friend's asparagus foogath. Service and cocktails were outstanding! Pros: Ambience Cons: mildly pricey more

Service (almost) outshone the food 5/1/2009

As somebody who is easy to please but difficult to blow away, I can say I was definitely blown away. Were it only for the food (I had a delicious soup of morels, fava beans and ramps, spiced with too many indian spices for me to name that paired perfectly the with Montlouis Sur Loire that I was drinking, spring lamb two ways that was perfectly cooked, and a suprising yogurt and cardamom cheesecake), I would have given this restaurant 8s and 9s. But the service really elevated things to another level. Not only was our server incredibly knowledgeable and flawless, so was our bus boy, food runner and hostess. The food runner could cite multiple names for the exotic ingredients, helping us understand what they were. The bus boy, while folding a bathroom bound diner's napkin, engaged us in conversation. They were clearly a cohesive team and the service was delightful while not overbearing. I would definitely return to Tabla again, and again, and again. more

Always a pleasure! 3/5/2009

Whether I do drinks outside in the summer, the Bread Bar at lunch or dinner upstairs, Tabla never disappoints. The staff is friendly and helpful, the drinks are delicious and the menu is always a treat. And I think their naan is some of the best in the city. The last time I went was for a late Valentine's Day dinner: they gave me a box of really yummy chocolates at the end of the meal! more

One of my favorite spots in NYC 1/27/2009

This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC! The decor is beautiful and the atmosphere is great. The tasting menu is very interesting and everything is delicious! Sometimes the service is a little slow but I actually don?t mind it because it gives me time to enjoy my conversation without feeling rushed. more

Disappointing Return 12/29/2008

Four years ago, I had a sublime dining experience whose memory lingered of a remarkably inventive fusion of Indian, French cuisine. I was disappointed when I returned with my family of four for a dinner two days before the New Year. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the service met expectations. Several dishes were excellent- crab cakes, lobster, and kobe steaks. Inexplicably, the sauce on the skate and cod was just too salty-rendering the dishes almost inedible. My daughter's snapper included a portion of skin with the attached remnant of a side fin that should have been trimmed. The chicken samosas were not tasty and seemed out of place in this upscale menu. Finally, the pacing of the dishes was too slow, almost 2 1/2 hours for a three item prix fixe menu. Had the food been sufficiently inspired and enthralling, this would have been time to savor. Instead- it was irritating to try to stay awake to find out what one had ordered for desert. Perhaps this was just an off night, but I will not be returning soon to shell out $100 per dinner without liquor at Tabla despite it's pretty decor. Pros: Decor, Ambiance, Lighting, several excellent fusion Indian/French cuisine Cons: slow service, some overly salty dishes, more

A disgrace to Indian food 12/28/2008

A fusion restaurant should understand and express the beautiful elements of the original cuisine of a culture and fuse it with other, different elements in a surprising, interesting, and pleasant manner. Tabla fails completely in its effort at making Indian food and in its efforts at fusion. Do not order the sausage dish. It tastes like a college kid's failed attempt at cooking. The food is terrible and a disgrace to the Indian culinary culture. more

Rather go to Bread Bar 1/30/2008

One of my favorite Tastings in the city is Gramercy Tavern, and one of my favorite cuisines is Indian, so I was very excited to try Meyer's Tabla. I'm sorry to say that the experience was very disappointing. It may seem like a strange complaint, but I really think the problem with Tabla's Tasting Menu is that it is just too much food--and not very exciting food--at that. Perhaps if I had been served a smaller portion of the Red Snapper, I wouldn't have realized how boring it was-- I left half of it on my plate. Must say though, the yuzu cone dessert was very good, and the roti is some of the best I've had. If I ever went back, it would be to Bread Bar, to get some more of the roti, and to see what Meyer can do with more traditional Indian cuisine. more

Service was deathly slow, food lacked taste, portions were small 1/7/2008

We went to the bread bar at Tabla for my friends birthday on a Monday night. There was a decent crowd. People were mostly around 35 years old. We all ordered one dish and some of us ordered bread. The waiter barely came over at all! We had to hound her down and ask for items many times. My chicken Tikka was dry and lacked any flavor. My friends who ordered it also said it was bland. My friend's ceviche looked super tiny! We ordered the pumpkin chocolate cake and some vanilla lemon dessert. The chocolate one was pretty good but the other one was just plain weird and the flavor didn't go. Stay away from this trap. They treated us like we barely existed and it was a Monday! Imagine a Friday night. Pros: Ambiance, decor, price Cons: slow service, lacking in taste more

All Kinds Of Interesting 12/30/2007

The Bread Bar at Tabla is all kinds of interesting to me. A modern take on Indian food. It's not quite traditional and not quite fusion. The space is nice and lofty, it features an open kitchen which is fun to watch. My standout favorites were the Pork Shank, chicken masala (which does not come in a soupy base), lemon pilaf and the naan. The Pork shank falls right off the bone. The chicken is definitely some of the most perfectly done chicken I have had the naan is really good. Those items were fantastic but everything else I would say was interesting. A must try but, I'm not sure if it's made my favorities list just yet. more

Elegant Indian 10/8/2007

Tabla provides an elegant and serene envirnonment to enjoy an international meal with Indian spices used to perfection. While not a true Indian restaurant, Tabla presents a meal flavored with the best of Indian preparation and spices. The room is elegant and serene. The service is outstanding. The lunch prix fixed menus are a great value. more

Fell short 9/30/2007

I expected more for the price and for the reputation of Tabla's proprietor. While the food is generally innovative and well executed with several amazing courses on the tasting menu, others simply seemed like placeholders. Wine pairings were average, culminating at dessert. The restaurant tended toward the loud side and we were seated under an overly bright light, but most disappointing was service that was at times uninformed (only the primary server seemed to know the menu) and occasionally neglectful (confusion over who was waiting on us, drink orders missed, and eventually needed to flag down someone for our check). The experience was far from horrific, but there are many more options in NYC with equally interesting food and less complacent more

  • The Scene
Occupying a cavernous space in the Met Life Tower, the restaurant's soaring staircase, deeply stained woods and lush, curvilinear details make a striking impression. The second-floor dining room, itself gently bi-level, has a serious but relaxed air; smart, impeccably professional and engaging service creates a very comfortable dining experience.

    The Food
This isn't Indian cuisine, but seasonings and techniques from the area lavishly spice up what would otherwise be competent and creative American food. Take roast chicken, to which a cumin jus and anise notes lend uncommon panache; or surreally succulent lamb enlivened by acutely tuned fruity curry flavor. A whole apple filled with roasted egetables and scented with Roquefort makes a striking starter, as does a handsomely composed crab and avocado salad with tamarind chutney in a papadum shell. The menu holds no letdowns: Desserts, like a cone of stiff kulfi with licorice, ot cinnamon souffle, extend dinner's spice into the sweet realm.

    High Marks
"Tabla is an extraordinary eating experience. Each plate was bursting with flavor - try the tabla crab cake followed by the tapioca crusted shrimp and scallops." (evi, Citysearch user)\

"The gleaming wooden staircase is lined with candles that seem to cast a magical glow on the whole place." (mariejulienne, Citysearch user)

"I'm no expert on "Indian fusion" food, but everything I ate, from the naan to the kulfi, really impressed me." (cobraman332, Citysearch user)

    Low Marks
"My only beef is the excessive use of salt. It wasn't necessary and only took away from the other spices that were working their magic." (mango_mama, Citysearch user)

"One slight criticism would be timing...it seemed to take a little too long to get the entrees." (georgiboy, Citysearch user)
