V. Impressive sake menu, and the sushi is very fresh. The ""kobe"" style beef wasn't really Kobe style - and the Kabuto was so-so. I will echo others who have noted the lame serv...

Great sushi, good atmosphere and service 6/17/2009

We were in Sausalito for two days and found Sushi Ran on Google Maps. As out-of-towners, we really appreciate finding good, healthy food when we/re traveling. We found the food here to be really good. I think this was the best sushi we've had in a very long time. Had the Crunch Roll, Seared Tuna, Unagi and steamed veggies. Great textures and flavor combinations. And they didn't go overboard with the rice in items like the two piece Unagi. It was about the fish, not how much rice they could stuff it with. We ate there two nights in a row if that tells you anything. The service was good. As big water drinkers, we loved that our glasses were NEVER empty. Pros: Food quality, flavor combinations, service Cons: None to speak of more

Mystery hype 8/20/2007

I've been going to Shushi Ran for years... and years... it's the default location of the place, I guess. It's ubiquitousness on ""best of"" lists is one of the strangest things I can think of in the restaurnat scene. The ""restaurant""area is very small and hard to get into, but the two times I've dined at the bar the food was unremarkeable. The overflow ""bar"" area is where I have sat trying out things like the highly-rated black cod and caramelized shrimp (the former very greasy and both so salty I could almost not eat them), the grilled squid (always a bit overcharred and much better witht the sauce that comes witht the nori-wrapped ahi), etc. The wine list has gotten noticibly less interesting in the past year or two, though the service has gotten much better. Pros: Good social scene. Large sake selection Cons: Mediocre food and wine list more

Delicious and high quality 7/24/2007

I heard that this was a great restaurant; then I heard that it had gone downhill; so I went to try it out for myself. The fish was excellent, high quality, fresh. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef told us to 'trust him' when we ordered the omakase. I'm glad we did! I will definitely be going back. Pros: excellent fish, good service even during busy time Cons: very crowded more

Bad Service 1/23/2007

Visiting San fran for a few days and went to Sausalito for the day, this seemed to be the only sushi there. The chefs were not very enthusiastic and the service was average at best. The sushi was good but very expensive. The worst part for me was I sat at the bar and was quite disgusted by the dirty food encrusted brown gap between the horizontal and vertical pieces of the sushi bar, definately could use a cleaning!!!!! Pros: sushi Cons: service more

Great sushi and Japanese restaurant in cozy Sausalito!! 12/17/2006

The first time I went to Sushi Ran, I wasn't overly impressed. However, my recent dining experiences changed that! We escaped SF and went to Sausalito for the weekend. We had reservations at Sushi Ran on Friday night then ended up eating there twice b/c it was SO good. I recommend ordering more than just the sushi. The basic sushi is good, but somewhat overpriced. The salmon (sake) sashimi was delcious. Spicy tuna roll w/ avocado was perfect. Our favorite dishes were two chef specials - miso glazed cod (to die for) and Vietnamese shaking beef w/ dipping sauce (awesome). We also enjoyed the sake and wine list. Pros: Delicious food, good sushi, lively atmosphere Cons: Expensive, long wait w/o reservations more

Most boring sushi place ever. 10/9/2006

I didn't realize until this experience just what I've come to expect at a sushi counter. I realize a lot of it now because the chefs at Sushi Ran don't really do any of it. After ordering a couple of nigiri, we ended up ordering ""omakase"", which they take to mean one exact set menu of 7 pieces of sushi or 5 kindes (2 pieces each) of sashimi. Every single ""omakase"" order was served, nonchalantly, on a single tray, all at once, with exactly the same presentation. But what's the point of sitting at the bar if you can't eat the sushi one piece at a time, right as it's prepared? Sushi chefs that I enjoy tend to prepare a dish or a roll, hand it to me, and listen for any feedback before deciding which piece to prepare next. These guys were completely out of tune with that idea. Pros: Nice area. Comfortable place. Cons: Overpriced, uncreative chefs, not at all Japanese more

degrading service and quality 6/25/2006

the first few times times we dined there it was a fantastic experience all around. food was great (the kobe beef sashimi was spectacular!), the rice is perfect and the drinks were awesome although a bit pricey. the last few times we've been back, our waiter was overly attentive and our order took forever to arrive. when it did the rice used on the sushi was too warm so the fish tasted warm and mushy, like an egg cooking in 100 degree sun. oh, yeah, we had reservations but still had to wait 20 minutes! we would have left if we didn't drive from the city to get there! Pros: parking Cons: price more

Order Off The Fresh List 4/24/2006

Sushi Ran is an excellent sushi restaurant for San Franisco but would only be average if it were located in LA. Be sure and order items off the chef's fresh list to ensure the best of the day. Quality was noticeably higher for items off the fresh list. The list of cooked dishes is diverse and well executed. The sake list is one of the best I have ever seen outside of Japan. Service is overall polite and attentive but not too much so. Overall an excellent sushi experience in the Bay area. Pros: sake list, fresh list , service more

Run from Sushi Ran 4/16/2006

While they did have a large selection of unusual fish, the freshness was just average. The service was horrible. My sushi did not arrive until my husband was 90% done with his dinner entree. I had to flag the waitress down or else I never would have gotten it. Later on, we realized they had never brought the soup he ordered. Really, pretty pathetic for $100+ per couple! Pros: wide variety of fish Cons: terrible service, fish not super fresh, over priced more

Fresh, Great Sushi! 1/15/2006

disappointed 2/15/2004

What happened to Sushi Ran? I am orinally from Japan, and I thought that Sushi Ran was the place to go... They used to serve authentic sushi... Well... not anymore... I like Gunkan roll style when it comes to Toro. But the chef told me that they would not accept such request.., then I asked for Toro Sashimi, they didn't take the request either. Why can't you serve Toro Sashimi when you can serve Toro Sushi? Is it the same part of Tuna? what kind of sushi place is that? How could you have ""Sushi Lovers Club""? I am very dissapointed... more

Great Food, Poor Atmosphere 11/30/2003

The first time I went to Sushi Ran, I was impressed. The food is great (even the Teriyaki Chicken is delicious) and I had an enjoyable time. The second time I went, I was disappointed. The service was horrible. It took forever for them to come to the table each time, and they didn't even ask how everything was. We ate outside, and the heat lamps burnt out. Everyone was freezing (it was a chilly night) and they wouldn't take the time to re-light the lamps! It made for a bad experience. The sushi is good, but really, how can you screw up sushi? I was not, by any means blown away. Pros: good food, excellent saki list Cons: slow, poor service, nothing special more

I loved it... 7/29/2003

I have been twice - both times with reservations. We were seated promptly and had great service both times - in fact the first time was for my Birthday and our waiter was outstanding. He brought us a small selction of apps to try, a free plate of Shaking Beef (FABULOUS...we ordered a second one) and a free dessert. I would highly recommend Sushi Ran for a special occassion or for entertaining out of town guests as it is a bit pricey...for great cheap sushi in the City Sushi Boom on Geary is really good. oh and I love that people bring their dogs out to Sushi Ran with them... Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Fun Atmosphere Cons: Pricey more
