How is this place a secret? 11/17/2010

I found Sumis one night because I was fed up with Kanpai attitude! I have been treated rudely 3 of the 5 times and they just have the we don't care go somewhere else attitude. So me and my $50 to $100 a week habit did. I was surprised to find it so quite! I have a feeling it is a well kept secret....but not for long. The sushi is great, the prices vary from medium to high but they have an all you can eat sushi roll night & $6.95 lunch special. it is truly one of the cleanest sushi places around Bend and a Japanese Sushi Chef to boot! Her name....Sumi what else :) I love her light and crisp tempura I love making my own rolls & I do love the Sumi roll, i would say Sumis Rainbow roll is one of the best I've ever tasted...adding some tabiko is icing on the sushi more

Sumi's: A Hidden Gem 2/27/2009

We've enjoyed our dinners at Sumi's and look forward to many more. The menu is varied and pleasing. My daughter, a vegetarian, found a variety of appealing and satisfying dishes from which to choose. I enjoyed the sushi, which was fresh and nicely prepared by Grant, our favorite sushi chef, whom we've followed from Yoko's to Sun River and were delighted to find at Sumi's. Sumi was very gracious, checking on our table several times during the meal to see if all was well and that we had what we wanted. The wait staff was efficient and friendly. My new favorite roll is the Sumi roll. The eel is excellent, also. The lunch menu looks like a good value. We'll try that next. more

Very poor service and low quality food 8/27/2008

I have tried this restaurant a second time after already one bad experience. I wanted to try it again to see if it improved.\r \r I was promptly greeted and was seated at the Sushi bar. The waiter gave me a tall glass of water and asked if I would like anything else to drink. I asked if they could recommend a Sake. They offered me a taste of a super market variety...which I asked if they knew anything about Sake. They said no. They then set up for glasses and poured different Sake into each and asked which one I would like. I thought, what a waste, if this was expensive Sake.\r \r Next I choose a vegetarian noodle dish for dinner, and asked for medium spicy. The waiter then came back since the restaurant was not very full and started to talk to me. I asked how they liked working at Sumi's. Pandora's box just opened. They started to talk about the lack of business, and that the restaurant down the street had better tips. The waiter then launched into their past employment. \r \r Dinner came and the waiter said, ""if you don't like it, I can take it back."" That was a red flag. I tried it and sure enough, the dish had no spice at all and lacked vegetables. I complained about it and they took it back. Next it came back and had so much spice that it could not be eaten and again had a few pieces of broccoli, but that was it for vegetables.\r \r Sumi's has a very nice decor and with some help could be a really fun place to dine. They really miss the mark on service and the food could be a lot better.\r Pros: Really nice interior, great outside seating in the summer Cons: poor staff, below average food more

Great Service!! Great Food!! 7/15/2008

Highdesertrun, Thanks for the advice my husband and I have tried Kanpai and Yokos with mixed feelings. Then we tried Sumi?s and had a great dining experience we sat on the balcony amongst the pines and the deer that crossed by below us. The pot-stickers were great although we didn?t have the nerve to create our own sushi roll we did select a few off the menu and were very pleased. While we were there a photographer was taking pictures of some food samples. When Sumi came by to ask us how are meal was, we asked about the food they were photographing and she informed us that they would be available to order in August when she introduces several new menu items. I was also impressed to see that Sumi visited several tables while they were dinning asking for feedback regarding the food and service provided truly an owner that cares about the customers dining experience. Again thanks for the tip Sumi?s is one of Bends best. more
