Not Just A Hippy Trippy Bookstore 5/27/2011

I know what you?re thinking. If you have heard of Strands before and snubbed it for a trip to Borders or Barnes & Nobles instead, please give Strands another chance. The next time you are in need of a particular book, look beyond the warehouse d?cor and hipsters laying spread out on the floor sampling the latest out of print reads, and consider all of the money you could be saving. Take a look around this non traditional book emporium complete with new/used titles, and rare books that are hard to find even on Amazon. Only here can you find everything from a large selection of great $1 used books to the newest bestsellers. Pick up one of their popular canvas tote bags (free with purchase) to carry all your finds home. My favorite section is ?Bargain books,? a random selection of hardbacks, for thirty dollars, clients can pick out a selection of their favorite books. There are also some tables in the aisles which are often packed high with new books at slightly cheaper prices. Look down, if the table has a bottom area, for used versions for way cheaper. This is the only place in Manhattan that has this kind of selection at unbeatable prices. I love Borders and Barnes & Noble as much as the next person but its okay to cheat every now and then. So go ahead and cross over to the dark side for a little while. I dare you to leave Strands without buying a new book. more

Don't sell there unless you have to. 5/28/2008

I went there to sell some old books i did not need any more. I was faced with the most despising, indifferent, obnoxious people. They barely talked to me, basically treated me like a convict, it was a horrendous experience. Next time, I'll just put my books to recycle... Pros: Cheap Cons: Horrible, horrible staff. more

Hot as Heck! 6/27/2002

I LOVE books, especially discounted rare books. This store would improve and would have TONS more business if they actually acted like they care about their customers. How about a little customer service? And, how about Air Conditioning. I'm sorry, but the average customer would rather pay 10% more at B&N and have the comfort of shopping for hours. At the Strand, you rush out because you are drenched in sweat. Hardly how you want to come back to work after your lunchbreak! They have the ""we are always right"" attitude and screw the customer mentality. IT stinks, b/c their books are great. If you can stand the grime of the store, shop here. Pros: Rare Books, Inexpensive Cons: No Air Conditioning, Grimey Store, Poor Customer Service more
