worst service I've ever had! 6/13/2005

The food was sub-par. The service was horrible! The background noice/music was loud so we couldn't communicate with our waitress. When we tried to order dessert, our waitress misunderstood us/we misunderstood her...whatever..the main point is she brought the dessert we DIDN'T want and then refused to exchange it with us when we requested a different one! COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR. I understand miscommunications can happen but when your customer/client asks you for something-you get it for them, esp when it's something as easy as exchanging a dessert that's already pre-made and has been sitting in the refrigerator for over a week anyway. Never going there again and also spreading the word along. more

So much fun! 5/31/2005

When I haerd that Rachael Ray from FoodNetwork came to film a new series at Steps of Rome in North Beach, I thought I had to see what it was all about. I had an awesome time. My boyfriend and I sat outside along Columbus Ave and watched all the ""interesting"" people stroll by. Our waiter was completely charming. The whole staff was so cute. It is rare in the city that Italian places actaully have Italian staff. It makes the experience more authentic for me. Two thumbs up on the food too! I will be back soon. Pros: food, staff, music Cons: too crowded more

love this place! 3/16/2005

Steps of Rome Caffe remains one of my favorite places to go out in the city. I hear rumors that it is a tourist trap, but every single time I've been I've enjoyed myslef and the food. I love the cioppino and pizzas, not to mention the cute Roman manager. He is so friendly and adorable. Pros: staff, food Cons: music too loud more

My favorite spot in North Beach! 3/12/2005

I went to Steps of Rome CAffe on Friday with my two gorlfriends and we had such a blast. I used to go there when I was younger and wasn't quite sure if I would still like it. I was pleasantly surprised by the good service and good food. Our waiter was adorable and very charming. I ate the crab ravioli and haven't stopped thinking about it since. So in short, the rumors about Steps of Rome just being a tourist trap are not true, at least in my experience.. I will gladly go back! Pros: cute waiters, fun ambience, good food Cons: music very loud more

No Italians Here! 3/6/2005

In sum, this place is a Tourist Trap! Too salty, too overcooked and too over priced! The service was horrible. The food was bad!. I ordered the gnocchi, it was overcooked, tasted more like mashed potatoes with tomato sauce. My husband ordered the crab ravioli and the crab tasted old and the sauce was all salt, no flavor. There are PLENTY of good places in North Beach, this is NOT one of them. Italians are not cooking your food that's for sure. It's a great spot on a beautiful day for a glass of wine or coffee. Just don't eat the food! Pros: great location Cons: Exspensive!, Bad Food!, Bad Service! more

you know what you come for 2/21/2005

I have been going to Step sof Rome Caffe sinc e I was 16 years old. I just went back the other day after a year living abroad, and was happy to see that not much had changed. I saw that people complain about the service, but the service is good. I mean people come to Steps of Rome to be flirted with adn listen to loud music, so if it takes one more minute for me to get my check becuase the waiter is flirting, so be it. I was also happy to see that the staff has remained Euro. My pasta/seafood dish wa excellent. I give a 9 overall. Pros: staff more

FUN! 2/20/2005

Went with my girlfriend last thursday. The atmosphere and the energy was great. thanks for a wonderful time. more

fun place, a true Euro caffe 12/14/2004

I was pleasantly surpirsed. I had always heard of Steps of Rome but I was afraid to go because I thought it might be a tourist trap. But i really enjoyed myself. The Euro staff was so nice and interactive, and the food was decently priced and very tasty. Plus, I love that you can sit outside and eat your food. I will go back! People say it;s too loud, but I like the music. It's a good time! Pros: staff, pricing, food more

know your mood 10/14/2004

This can be a wonderful restaurant if you know what you're getting into. It is a great place to take a big group of people who are outgoing and fun loving. Do NOT take a reserved or introverted group of people here. They will hate it. The service can be the worst you've ever had, but if you are with a big group of fun people, no one cares. The mood at the restaurant is all about the party. I have had the best times with a group of people getting ready for a big party night, or with those who have alredy been drinking. It is rowdy, but fun. And yes, I like the food. The filet, Cara rigatoni, and tiramisu are delicous. I took an Italian woman here and she loved it. Don't bother with reservations, they take them, but I don't think they use them. Pros: inexpensive, fun atmosphere, good food Cons: , long waits more

AMBIANCE 6/13/2004

THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS. THE ENVIROMENT IS FUN AND ENTERTAINING. WONDERFUL DESSERTS. AND IN WALKING DISTANCE OF BARS AND CLUBS Pros: ATMOSPHERE, SERVICE, FOOD Cons: , LIMITED SEATING more

Have a good time!! 5/8/2004

My favorite place to hang out in north beach. The food is like I had in Rome (try the seafood spaghetti...outstanding). You can tell the waiters are not professional, but their italian way of having a conversation gives you the chance to forgive them. If you're looking for something quite and formal don't even step inside. Pros: friendly, good food, fun more

Terrible Service 10/17/2003

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flagged down the waiter and tried to give him my credit card, but they only take cash. I was digging out my cash the waiter dissappeared. We waited 10 minutes and I went up to the cash register and tried to pay but the lady working it said I needed to wait and she would tell me when I could pay. 10 minutes of trying to flag the waiter later I went up to the bar and told the person who appeared to be in charge I had been waiting for 20 minutes to pay, he looked annoyed, did not apologize, and told the woman to take my money. Absolutely terrible service. Cons: Service, Service, Extremely loud more

really fun, if you're young 10/15/2003

this is a really fun place to go if you're up for a loud, bright, fun, night. definately dont go here if you are expecting to sit at a table and talk about anything of importance. the carpaccio is great, the salad fresca is not. the pasta dishes are good for the price, and the drinks are amazing. Its kind of like a mini-bar/club, and if you come past 8pm I believe they do card to get in the door. Overall I thought it was just a really fun place that I definately will go to again. Pros: lively, good drinks, good ambiance Cons: too crowded more

given: no comparison to italy 8/5/2003

The food and overall service wasn't very good. But then again, it's a given that the place of origin of food styles are always better, but I guess there's no need for anyone to boast about experiencing the food and the country's origin. more

Depends what you're looking for 6/2/2003

LOUD LOUD LOUD. If you want a frenzied pace filled with fun folks, this isn't a bad idea. Great place to watch the world cup. Good drinks, boisterous staff. Terrible food. Just terrible. Very oily and prego-quality sauces. more

Food and fun 5/15/2003

Had a total blast. Very loud, very crazy, very good for the ego if you're a female! Great place for a girls night out. Pros: ambiance, service, inexpensive Cons: parking, loud more

Taste of Italy 4/8/2003

Everyone running the show here is direct from Italy. With their designer jeans, Vespa scooters outside, and slick Italian hairstyles, this place makes you think you were hanging out at some cafe outside of the U.S. The food is great. No matter how stuff I am, there's always room for a little something here. Trendy, yes, but there's a good reason this place became so popular. more

Fun place for people watching... 3/12/2003

The food isn't bad. It's better in Italy but, the tiramisu is good. It's a fun place to hang out & people watch. The waiters are big flirts so, watch out! Don't feel special though since they flirt w/every woman that walks in the door. In other words, eat dinner somewhere in North Beach and then go to Steps of Rome for dessert & people watching. Pros: desserts, locaton, fun atmosphere Cons: parking, crowded more

TURN BACK WHILE YOU STILL CAN 2/20/2003

This is by far the ABSOLUTE WORST ""Italian"" restaurant in San Francisco. Believe me! Having lived here for 8 years Ive been to many North Beach restaurants. I really hit the jackpot this time. The combination of food and service was, at best insulting, and quite honestly abusive. As my out of town guests and I suffered through the meal we were entertained by an oversexed, adolescent wait staff who's idea of good service is to hit on every female who enters the building. Everything was bad; three of the entrees were inedible, and when I requested that they be removed from the bill the manager became confrontational and refused, arguing that I was trying to cheat him. On the way out of the restaurant he called one of my guests stupid and said we werent welcomed back. Not welcomed back? Thank God for small miracles. more

Steps of Rome - don't go 2/19/2003

It's embarrassing to think that Steps of Rome is what Italians think Americans want from a dining experience. And it can't be what Italians want from a dining experience - because I've been to Italy. In any case, don't go - unless you like waiting an hour for your ""reservation"", being stuffed into an over-crowded room, having bad pop music blasted at you at ear popping decimals while you shout your order to a waiter at the other end of the table just to have him bring you a plate of bland-tasting pasta. Pros: other restaurts near Cons: LOUD, crowded, bad food more
