Good Place that Needs More Customers 4/22/2008

Living near the place, I've visited it twice in the last couple of weeks for breakfast. All in all, it's not a bad place. The food is pretty good but pricey -- but then again the price of food has gone up quite a bit (April 2008). Service was great but, for the most part, I was the only customer in the place. There's great ambiance in the place. They have a lot of conversational items in glass cases. \r \r My main ""beef"" with the place isn't really their fault. It's the lack of customers that they have. This is a downtown Galveston problem however. When compared to other towns and cities, the Galveston downtown area is ""dead"" -- especially on the weekdays. Most eating establishments in the area don't seem to have much of a clientele and I wonder how they can afford to stay in business. Places like Star are open in the morning and in the early afternoon. But as soon as the lunch ""crowd"" has left they ""close up shop"". \r \r So tourists, if you visit the area and are staying downtown, stop by this place. You won't be disappointed. Pros: Service, Ambiance Cons: Prices, Lack of fellow customers more

Fun Family Experience 3/31/2008

We had the opposite experience and would highly recommend this restaurant. They couldn't have been friendlier to our group of 8 during spring break. The kids loved the soda fountain sodas and the burgers were huge (my 15-year-old couldn't finish it). And the tomoto-basil soup was delicious. In fact, when I asked if they gave out the recipe, our server very kindly declined, but said she'd pass along our compliment to the person whose recipe it is. It has chunks of tomotoes, a little bacon and croutons. Very tasty. Our only downside was they couldn't split the check. Don't go expecting a fast burger (there's plenty of fast food joints in Galveston if all you want to do is eat and run), but it was a fun, casual place to sip sodas and have conversation with friends. Pros: Fun atmosphere Cons: Line at the ladies' room more

Horrible! 11/27/2007

As a little girl, my mother used to take me to Star on a regular basis, so I was very excited to see that they were re-opening. We went in on a Saturday around 11 a.m. and were told that we would have to wait as they were transitioning from breakfast to lunch. Odd, because there were only about 4 other tables but, nonetheless, we waited...........About 10 minutes later, our server came back to get a drink order. Two iced teas, simple enough. After waiting 25 minutes for our iced teas, I went to the counter to try and get them. The cook ended up getting our iced teas for us. Our server finally came over to get our order, two chicken salad and tomato-basil soup combos. It then took another 30 minutes to get just the chicken salad sandwiches and the side of potato salad accompanying them while we watched them sit on the line the whole time. We were then told that they were still preparing the soup. A short while later, the waitress brought our soup. Looking at the cups of greasy clear broth, I politely informed the waitress that we had ordered tomato-basil to which she snapped,""that IS tomato-basil soup"" and stormed off. Digging through my cup of broth, I found raw tomatoes, chunks of wheat bread, and uncooked bacon. I decided not to brave the soup but my friend told me it was, in fact, horrible. The chicken salad sandwich was mediocre, at best, and the potato salad was inedible (hard to do, but they managed). The woman whom I think is the owner, walked around glaring at people. And the woman behind the register, could not be bothered to get off the phone to ring me up. All in all, AWFUL experience. Will never darken their door again. You'd be better off to go to S*peculoos on the next block. Cons: everything more
