AVOID! 9/12/2009

A caution to anyone considering a visit to this business - STAY AWAY! \r My sole experience was in late 2008, and it was more than enough to make me resolve to never return. I could write a lengthy story on the happenings of that evening, but I will be brief: (1) service was unbelieveably slow, and it was not even a particularly busy evening. The waitperson (who I believe was the manager) got very testy when I complained about the poor service. It took about an hour and a half to get food served. We should have left before that time, but we did not. (2) Food was not the major problem, although it was not very good after we got it. No better than average, and on the pricey side. (3) Restrooms were like something you would find in a Mexican prison. Absolutely filthy, both mens and womens. My wife wanted to call the county authorities about the deplorable toilet conditions, but did not. (4) The server tried to screw us on the bill. Fortunately I looked at it closely, and noted that there was an unidentified charge of about 20% on it. I called the server over to ask about it, and she said that it was the tip. There was nothing about adding a service charge (especially for a party of two) noted on the bill, posted anywhere, or shown on the menu. Clearly, this was an attempt to get a double tip for those who do not read the bill before paying. My response was to demand removal of the tip applied to the bill, then I tipped NOTHING. I will certainly never return to this place and advise anyone reading this to do the same. Pros: None that I saw Cons: Extremely slow and poor service more

Just drive on by... 10/14/2008

After riding by it several times and hearing that it's a good M/C stop, my daughter and I visited recently and tried to eat there. Well I have to agree this the below reviewer... we too TRIED. As a Harley rider, I've had my share of truckstop meals and convience store hotdogs, but even that was 4 star compaired to the ""food"" at Specht's. The nachos and onion rings were greasy, the sandwiches were dry, the fries were soft snd barely warm. (Remember me, the iron stomach motorcycle rider?) The staff was very slow to acknowledge us, bring us a menu, take an order, AND make eye contact with us, as well. The only reason that I gave it 2 stars, is for the actual environment. The store/bar itself is rustic and quant. The farm like scenery is relaxing and the ride to get there is enjoyable. SO, unless you are stopping for ONLY a cold drink (and have time to wait for that), I just can't recommend Specht's for much more than a rest stop. Pros: Rustic and quaint Cons: Food and service is AWFUL! more

Good Burgers and Outdoor Seating, Simple and Down Home 3/22/2008

I really liked this place. The drive out was pleasant on a sunny Saturday. My party and I ordered onion rings (slightly charred, tasty) and chips and salsa (chips good, generous amount, not greasy; salsa typical). Then we each ate burgers which were deliciously charred (as advertised). One of my companions had the soup of the day, a tomato vegetable soup, which he says was delicious. However, he was disappointed that they didn't have Tobasco brand sauce but instead had a non-descript variety of hot sauce. I was also disappointed (but only very slightly) that they didn't have A-1 sauce which I like to put on my burger. Instead, they offered me an alternative steak sauce I had never heard of (and didn't use). In any event, the burger was so good I didn't care. The fries were also good, golden and crispy and slightly chunky, and not greasy. We each had iced tea. Our bill came to $40 plus tip (three persons). \r \r A side note: When we arrived my party and I were inhibited by 10 or more motorcycles parked outside and when I commented on all the bikes the waitress told us there was a party of bikers in the back we decided to eat inside which turned out to be good because we could study all the neat things hanging from the wall. Later on when the bikers left we ventured outside and wish we had sat there all along because there was plenty of room (plus looking at the bikers, they were a genial group after all). \r \r It's not on Blanco exactly so make sure you don't pass it up like I did because it can be hard to make a U-turn. You turn on Specht Road which will be on the right side on NB Blanco (look for the sign that says ""Restaurant"".) Also, if you are concerned about the distance, it only seems far away. Coming back the drive is much shorter than it first appears (and worth it on a nice day.) Pros: Perfectly Charred Burgers, Friendly and Welcoming Environment Cons: Lacking Name Brand Condiments more

Gem in the Country 2/11/2008

Just your fun small restuarant, like being around your neighbors. Good food, drinks and outdoor music with a small bit of history. It was our first visit and we enjoyed it and will be back. Pros: Fun to sit in the outside area with live music. Cons: Service could have been faster but it was okay! more

Hill Country Favorite 11/17/2002

Great Place. You feel at home in this hill country favorite. It's not flashy but it's what makes Texas home. There's live music in the back covered porch on weekends. Beer and food are cheap and are consistant in serving size and quality. Please don't go, I'll re-iterate, I want a spot out back. Pros: Outdoos eating, Live music, Inexpensive Cons: getting very popular, lots o kids, sometime more
