Space 550

I've been around the block and been to my fair share of clubs. This past weekend (6/9/07) My girlfriend and I went to a Burning Man party there with some friends. We found the space550 staff aggressive and unfriendly. Security told us no outside 'liquids' were allowed inside (sealed or otherwise), this included a sealed bottle of water I brought. They said they would thoroughly search people, purses and bags and, "... anything remotely resembling something illegal would be confiscated; you and your entire party would be 86'd" I asked if they would confiscate the small bottle of ibuprofen and roll of Tums in my g/f's purse, they said, "ABSOF#@KINLUETELY!" I noticed these searches were taking place inside the club after paying the cover ... It wasn't as if it was one or two disgruntled employees, almost every staff person we dealt with projected a negative attitude. One exception was the coat check monitor. She seemed nice and pleasant as she took our coats and asked us for the $3.00 per coat.. Some examples: We pay the cover, walk in and there is a slight bottleneck of patrons inside blocking us from walking further into the club. A staff security guard pushes up to me from behind and yells, "Don't block MY doorway!" As we make our way into the club, I ordered 4 cocktails. The cost was $44.00. I gave the bartender a $50.00 bill. Before I could utter the words 'keep the change', she snapped, "WE don't take any bills over a twenty!" I said, "oh, well after paying the $80.00 cover, $12.00 coat check, this is the smallest bill I have. She said, "Look, that's YOUR problem, I don't care WHAT you say, I'm not taking your FIFTY!" She said there was a gas station down the street, "Go get THEM to make your change." Overall the club could be a great party venue. The various rooms on two levels, the infrastructure, lights, sound etc. were nice. It's just the staff was a major buzzkill. VERY un-Burningman like. I will avoid this club in the future. I just had been in the city for one week, so I hadn't have the chance to know more places. I was in space550 for two hours, take some drinks and have some fun. Nice place. more

This is not a main stream club, usually promoters throw there party here so you have to see who is throwing the party so you know the crowd you are getting into. Dance floor is big down stairs & then there is a upstairs too. Usually it's 21 & up I have never had a problem here ever. There is also lots of parking!!! The promotors who throw parties in this place typically target a really young crowd. They probably have to in order to fill this place because it's huge. But with the young, rowdy crowd you get fights and really strict (read: rude) security. Getting in the door requires a long line, lengthy ID check, pat down/emptying of pockets, metal detector and then a picture of you holding your ID. And on one occasion, after that whole ordeal, they shut down early due to some sort of violent incident. This is my favorite venue, tops as far as size, location, security and feel. There is never a problem parking. They have a large outdoor smoking area and generally no problem letting people into or out of the smoking "lounge." Security isn't unreasonably unpleasant. (Be prepared to be searched at the door.) The layout inside is conducive to long nights of partying. Having several different rooms is like being able to choose from several different clubs without ever leaving Space 500. Some nights the restrooms are kept cleaner than on other nights; I think it depends on the crowd and the mood of the employees that night. I regret the move of some of my favorite parties from Space 550, but the venue itself is still my favorite! Pros: size, look/sound/feel, location Cons: attitudes more

the vibe is intense and the music awesome... Arguably the best sound/lighting system in SF- 1015 might be close, but the crowd can be very sketchy there... the sat parties there are off the hook!!! per a previous post, the parties do range from partly asian to mostly asian, but hey- aren't we in the city anyways? only been to a couple of friday parties there- they kind've range as well, but there's nothing consistently good. one note of caution, though- the lines are long Pros: free parking, awesome club Cons: long lines more
