Editorial review from Citysearch 3/23/2013

If you love you pet do not use Sonora $4000 in a week and nothing my young dog is dyeing because these vets are incompetent and only want to take your money. Dr Gilsson and his staff are horrible. I will be getting an autopsy and suing the group. I am also going to 3-5-10-12-and News 15 filing a fraud report with the Maricopa County Attorney and the Attorney General. I'm not doing this out of revenge I'm doing this to save the Animal you love and that is part of your family.\r \r DO NOT RISK YOUR PET WITH SONORA!!! MALPRACTICE THROUGHOUT.\r I WILL BE BACK TO SIGN MY NAME TO THIS BUT DO NOT WANT MY MEDICAL RECORDS DOCTORED..\r \r DEATH AWAITS AT THE DOOR!\r \r So Sonora sends me to University Hospital in Tempe and I spend another 580 today on test that Sonora should have done.\r \r God help you if you take your poor animal to Sonra you might as well take it out in the back yard and shoot it yourself.\r \r Save an Animals life go anywhere but Sonora....\r \r At 8.15 pm 3-23-2013 after $7000 my 8 year old beautiful German Shepherd Passed away. \r \r I stick with what I said about Sonora if you want your family member to die take it there..\r All they care about is how high they can get the bill. more

I would recommend going elsewhere. The 3/14/2012

I would recommend going elsewhere. The woman I spoke with on the phone was completely rude. I called in to ask if it was possible to speak with a veterinarian prior to making a decision regarding an extremely expensive surgery for my dog. I have never, in my 6 or 7 years of being a pet owner, been denied to speak with the veterinarian beforehand. Her response to me was ""well that's what the consultation is for"" IF I DON'T HAVE TO PAY ALMOST $100 FOR A CONSULTATION WHY WOULD I DO IT! I know my dog needs surgery all I needed was to ask a few questions before deciding how soon. more

Great experience 1/4/2012

My boxer Mylady broke her leg. The bone was shattered. Dr.Rizzo did a very successful operation. Mylady was moving the leg all the time because of her young age plus she had a bad infection. Dr Rizzo was always very helpful. She knew what she was doing. Now Mylady is very healty, her leg is better than ever. Thanks to Dr Rizzo. I highly recommend her after our great experience. more

Fantastic vet and caring staff 8/29/2011

I can?t say enough good about Dr. Lillian Rizzo at Sonora Veterinary Specialists. In June 2010 our Collie mix, Corona, was having trouble getting up and walking. We brought her to our regular vet, who did x-rays and said there was not anything we could do for her, due to age. We brought her to Dr. Rizzo for a second opinion. Upon examination of her x-rays, she provided a correct diagnosis and was able to help our dog. She was very thorough and explained everything so that my husband and I could understand. It was very comforting to know that Corona was in such good hands. A few months later, we ended up adopting a Malti-poo through the clinic. The staff and Dr. Rizzo were again extremely easy to work with. After my first experience, I was confident in obtaining a dog that Dr. Rizzo knew was right for my family. She could not have chosen a better fit for our family. The staff and Dr. Rizzo were so caring and clearly have a genuine love for animals. I am so happy to know and trust a veterinarian like Dr. Rizzo. It is a comfort to me as a pet owner, to know that my special animals will be well taken care of. more

Worst Ever 8/8/2011

If you love your pet....bring it elsewhere. These people have no sense of urgency...so if your pet is in need of emergency attention....do not bring here. My dog needed surgery asap...was there at 9am and they said they would take her in at 4...well that turned to 5. By the time she had her surgery her organs failed and she died. She was 3. They didn't even have the time for a 15 minute ultrasound until noon...due to appointments....so not a good place to bring a pet for an emergency..they don't care at all! Poor staff, in my opinion...uneducated also. Hated the Dr....Rizzo...or whatever...could tell she did not give a crap at all. Giant hack job....and now I am left devastated and lost. more

Recommend 7/13/2011

Just wanted to share my experience with all of you. I would strongly recommend Sonora Veterinary Specialist to care for your dogs. We recently adopted a boxer puppy, Tyson. He was about 6 months old and was cute as can be, my two young boys absolutely fell in love with him. Within a week, the puppy started acting strange. He seemed very lethargic, dehydrated and he wasn't eating. He for sure wasn't acting like the puppy we brought home. We called the clinic to see if they could help us out. They told us to bring the puppy in right away. Immediately Dr. Rizzo came out and met us. It appeared she was visually checking him out, checking his gums, his stomach, and his behaviors. She decided that she would run some blood tests on Tyson. We later found out that he had parvo. :( \r Dr. Rizzo was very good at explaining what needed to be done for Tyson to survive. The recommendation was that we leave him there so she can treat him. \r Dr. Rizzo was very sympathetic and caring towards us. Anytime we wanted an update on the dog, the office and Dr. Rizzo quickly responded. Turns out our Tyson survived!! She even told us that she hadn't seen a puppy recover so quickly from parvo as Tyson did! \r A huge thank you to Dr. Rizzo and her staff for testing our puppy and diagnosing him so early on. We appreciateall the professionalism that we received. We now have Tyson at home as healthy as can be! I would strongly recommend the clinic as well as Dr. Rizzo to anyone! more

Great Experience 7/13/2011

We had a wonderful experience with Sonora Veterinary Specialists and Dr. Rizzo. Our Maltese Mix was urinating frequently, having accidents in the house, and I even noticed blood in her urine. A friend recommended Dr. Rizzo at Sonora Veterinary Specialists. We made an appointment and we are so happy we found Dr. Rizzo and the clinic! When we walked in the clinic everyone was very friendly. Exceptional Veterinarian 7/12/2011

From the moment Dr. Rizzo began treating our standard poodle, it was clear we were in good hands. Dr. Rizzo and team were professional, compassionate and extremely skilled in working with our poodle. Explaining the situation in terms we could understand to laying out a plan on next steps, all while appreciating the emotion involved from our viewpoint, working with Dr. Rizzo is superb. I would recommend Dr. Rizzo and Sonora Veterinary Specialists to anyone with an animal in need of care. Thank you, Dr. Rizzo! more

They Saved MY BABY!!! 7/11/2011

I wrote a much longer review on yelp if you want all the details\r \r My beloved Standard Poodle Evelyn had a GDV (it is when the stomach twists and it can kill them). thanks to their caring and knowledgable staff i rushed my baby in late at night when her stomach had started to get big. Dr. Rizzo then rushed in at almost 1 in the morning. she calmed me, a paniced mother, and then did surgery on my baby.\r \r That was over three weeks and my Eve is doing GREAT! \r \r I am very sorry to these people who lost there dog. i do not know the details of your experience, but it seems the opposite of mine. The staff, especially the over night techs, Dr. Crooks, and Dr Rizzo were amazing. \r \r i want people to take away a few things...\r 1) If you have a standard Poodle learn about GDV\r 2) Sonora vet and Dr. Rizzo are great! god forbid your pet gets sick, but if he/she does i trust them with my baby Eve's life. more

Saved my corgi 7/21/2009

Our dog had a mystery illness...at the end of the night, she would not even sit up. I called a pet hospital after running all over town to various ones , and they referred us to these guys. We took her in at about 2:30 am. The techs there seemed a little odd that late at night and in fact, I used to work with one at Petsmart and I wasn't sure what to think of her...but since it seemed our dog had a neurological issue, this was our only hope. Well, in just a few days, the vet Mark Soderstrom gave us exactly what we needed to fix our dog's ruptured disk. She's a corgi and they're prone to that, but she's so young, so they were confused as to why it happened. So were we...but one way or another, they told us exactly what she needed when we took her home, and within a short time, she was back to her old self...it's more than a year later and she's fine. They are wonderful vets here. Pros: Awesome veterinary specialists Cons: far from where I lived more
