Good BBQ, good prices, simple theory 12/19/2008

I've been eating at smokey J's for over 20 years. I probably pick up lunch for myself and my employees there at least twice a month. This place has been feeding working Austin at lunch and serving family packs at night for local families with consistent high quality and very reasonable prices for as long as I can remember. They are and always have been family run. Smokey J's is an Austin icon. Great breakfast tacos too !! This place keeps it simple and GOOD !! Pros: great bbq, very reasonable prices Cons: none more

Very rude service -- Go to Rudy's instead! 2/4/2007

The food at this ""mom and pop' neighborhood joint -- really a stand with a walk-up window and outdoor picnic tables -- is okay but the service can be so rude that I suggest you go up the street instead to Rudy's which is great/better BBQ and all the classic sides as well as breakfast tacos in the morning. And the service there is always flawless. The last time I went to Smokey J's and was treated rudely, I pointed it out to the guy serving me at the walk -up window and he said he didn't care! When I then said I would not return, he said, ""Well, that's your choice."" I asked whether he cared about losing a loyal customer and he said ""Not really ."" Pros: Okay food but not the best Cons: VERY rude service more

Visit Just once--you'll be back! 12/20/2005

Great prices, great BBQ. They also have tasty jerky. You can usually take orders to go or sit on the picnic tables they have set up outside, but other than that, the food is awesome and the staff is friendly and helpful. GREAT BBQ!
