Fried Food Fix 2/14/2008

Smitty's is not for the heart-conscious eater. We're talking fried fish and fried chicken as the main courses and some fairly unhealthy sides like mac n cheese, french fries, etc. That being said, when you're in the mood for fried food Smitty's is a good choice. They have five fish choices including catfish and red snapper. There are several combo meal opitons to satisfy large and small appetites. We tried the catfish and chicken and were happy with both. The french fries were not the best, substitute another side dish instead. The red beans & rice side was good. Not much for dining atmosphere, they do mostly take out business. It's best to call ahead as they prepare it when ordered so you will have to wait a little while if you order at the counter. Pros: Decent fried fish, chicken. Easy parking. Reasonable prices. Cons: A bit slow with counter ordering, especially if they're busy. more

Whatever it is, it ain't Cajun! 11/21/2006

I spent the summers of my childhood in New Orleans and grew up eating Cajun food. There are a few places in LA that feature passable and even some very good Cajun, but Smitty's doesn't even come close. I waited until a Friday to try their ""gumbo"" but was shocked when I got a bowl of the strangest soup I'd ever seen. There was white rice and some broth, ok fine. But there were little cocktail sausages in it. It had a very odd taste and didn't remind me of any sort of Cajun food I'd ever had. The ingredients just weren't very good at all. Their fried chicken was greasy and not very flavorful. I won't come back. more
