Not impressed 10/24/2006

My husband and I recently dined at Shelly's. It's a great atmosphere and the wait staff was very friendly, but the main event - the food - was subpar. I understand the woodfire concept, but I have eaten at other woodfire restaurants that incorporate a lot more flavor into their meats. My husbands beef ribs lacked flavor, and the "barbecue" sauce that came on the side tasted like sweet ketchup with pepper in in. The brisket was so-so. I had the pork tenderloin, which was probably the best thing off both of our plates. Though the meat was a little overdone, the pineapple sauce that covered it was great. The sides were sad - the twice-baked potato tasted a little like dirt - like when you don't wash a potato before you cook it. It just wasn't good. The vegetables were soggy. Given the prices, this was a highly disappointing trip. We won't be back. Pros: decor Cons: lack of flavor, prices more

Great lunch 1/3/2006

Me and my girlfriend went here for lunch on a Monday. We were seated and served promptly. The food was excellent. I ordered a bowl of chowder and the walleye fish and chips while my girlfriend had a walleye wrap, which included potatoes of your choice. I was impressed with the portion sizes and the quality of the food. Both the seafood chowder and the walleye were cooked perfectly and tasted excellent. I left Shelly's feeling full and satisfied. I would definitely eat here again, even though it was fairly expensive for my taste. But, if you want a great tasting meal and a romantic atmosphere, this place is for you. Pros: Great food, Great Atmosphere, Great service Cons: Fairly expensive more

Wonderful find 10/7/2005

My wife and I have been looking for a great local restaurant. We have finally found Shelly's. We were there on a special occasion and were immediately sat and were impressed with the interior and the ambiance of Shelly's. Our meals were impressive, my wife had a rabbit soup (I believe it was called Hunters Soup) which she pronounced as marvelous. I had a salad and the Pork Tenderloin whick I took home at least a quarter of and it was perfectly done and very tasty, my wife had the trout and it was very moist and tender. We enjoyed the meal and the waiter was one of the best we have had in a long time. We will return again. Pros: Food Quality, Service, Atmosphere more

Attitude is on the Menu 1/7/2005

I recently went to Shelly's for the first time. I was there with a large group of friends for drinks. Appearantly the staff was upset that our group wasn't interested in food. They ran out of the ingrediants for margaritas but instead of telling us they just brought nothing...and then at least an hour later brought it out. We just thought they forgot. One of the people in our party actually heard them complain about us not ordering enough. Their drinks are priced like they are a downtown Minneapolis bar. All I had here was a lemonade and it had an undesolved layer of sugar in the bottom. They were sloppy and had a bad attitude. I will never go back there again. Pros: convenient location Cons: , overpriced more

Too spendy for the food and atmosphere. 8/18/2002

We had a pleasant time at Shelly's, but it just wasn't worth the price. We were seated immediately, our server was top-notch, and the beer choices were good. We liked the wood motif and the big fireplace. The menu selections ranged from $15 for the specials to nearly $30 for a steak. The food was good, but not good enough for those prices. My husband's panfish special was basically fried fish and fries in a basket, and he was disappointed. My steak and our appetizer were good. However, for a total tab of $100, I would expect a tablecloth, REALLY good food, and want it to be less casual than shorts and t-shirts (which is what many people were wearing). If they cut their prices by 30%, I would recommend Shelly's in a minute, and would go back. But for these prices, I'd rather step out at Murray's or Jax. Pros: Great Service!, Quick seating, Relaxed atmosphere Cons: Food not worth price, Too casual for price more

A real taste of Minnesota. 7/6/2002

We visited Shelly's with friends on a Saturday evening and had no trouble being seated in the large northwoods cabin themed restaurant. Our server was attentive and made great suggestions. Our food arrived promptly. The lodge soup was hearty and flavorful. The beef brisket was so tender that it fell apart on my plate. My wife found the salmon to be flavorful as well. I don't care for popovers, though I enjoyed these. Overall, we were impressed. The prices were a little high, though considering the amount of food that you get, I think they're fair. The food is flavorful, but lacks spice which is to be expected in this style of restaurant. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the food is bland (which is an inaccurate and uninformed statement), but instead relys on the natural grill and smoke flavors which, in my opinion, is very Minnesotan. Pros: Great service, Large portions, Wonderful atmosphere Cons: Too much food more
