Where are the pancakes 11/16/2005

We've ordered takeout from Shanghai twice. I was excited to have a Chinese restaurant open in my area, but this place could be better. The Lemon Chicken was good. Crispy pieces of deep-fried chicken, with about a pint of lemon sauce on the side. We used less than half of the sauce. The Hot & Sour soup was just OK - a little too oily, and their recipe doesn't include shrimp. The Mu-Shu Pork is also good, but instead of the usual thin crepe-like pancakes, they serve small, thin tortillas. Sorry, not an acceptable substitution. If you do get the Mu-Shu, ask for extra plum sauce. The rice is white, plain, blah, boring, and doesn't clump together well. I might go back sometime, but only because it's conveniently located on my way home from work. The prices are reasonable, just don't expect the food to knock your socks off. more

Vegetarian's Dream! 9/9/2005

After swearing off meat, one of the things I missed the most was Chinese food, especially the chicken dishes. Then ShangHai opened in a new shopping development close to my house and my dream of eating delicious Chinese and Vietnamese food again came true! They offer two menus, one vegetarian and the other featuring standard meat dishes. I have not dined in yet, but I have had take-out twice and both times my experience was wonderful. The restaurant is beautifully and tastefully decorated, impeccably clean, and the employees/owners are extremely polite and friendly. The food, ahh, the food. On my most recent visit I had the Vegetarian Szechwan Chicken. A most tasty combination of veggie chicken pieces sautéed with green peppers, onions, bamboo, etc., in a spicy sweet and sour brown sauce. It is truly delicious, and my only complaint is that it isn't nearly spicy enough. It of course comes with steamed white rice, but sadly, no fortune cookie. Overall a great place to eat, and I will return often! more
