Avoid at all costs if you bring children!!!!!!!!! 8/2/2008

I wanted to try this restaurant for some time. We ventured out with another family. Upon our arrival, we were rudely told that they only have one highchair and don't really want children coming to the restaurant. After asking politely if we can borrow another highchair from the restaurant next door, the manager told us that he doesn't have room for us in the main restaurant and we would have to sit in the bar/lobby area. A miserable experience and an obnoxious staff. I will never step foot in that place again!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Great food and ice cold beer 4/17/2008

My husband and I love to go here! I'm from Japan and going to Shabu Shabu 70 always reminds me of going to a neighborhood restaurant back home. Not only is the food tasty, but the friendliness of all the employees is just so welcoming. Admittedly I am an avid beer drinker, and i have to tell you, if you crave an ice-cold beer with your sushi or shabu shabu or sukiyaki or whichever dish you choose to order, you will not be disappointed ... I think they might serve the coldest Asahi in the city. Recently we even stopped by for lunch ... what a great assortment of lunch specials on the menu .. I had the ""Stylish Don"". more

Excellent and authentic 2/16/2008

My wife and I go here every week and take our friends and family often. Everyone we've taken has enjoyed their experience. The food is fantastic with the proper attention paid towards flavor and delicacy, as is appropriate in authentic Japanese cuisine. We usually opt for one of the following, the Sushi Deluxe, Shabu Shabu, or Sukiyaki. I'd recommend all. Additionally, the appetizers are quite unique and flavorful. My favorite is the Uni Tempura, but the appetizer list rotates monthly, and we haven't found one we didn't enjoy. Pros: Authenticity, Sushi, Shabu Shabu, Friendly Staff more

Rude Service, mediocre food 2/14/2008

I was very disappointed with Shabu Shabu 70. Our friends told us they go here every month for the sushi deluxe. We met them and brought our child. It was a slow evening, maybe three other tables occupied. The atmosphere was nice. My boy was having a nice time, and was just laughing with our friends. The waiter was amused, but the manager or owner was not. He came to our table twice and asked us to take our son outside because he was too loud and disrupting the many other customers there. We looked around and found no one annoyed. If I thought my child was being over-active, I would have gladly taken him out to calm him down. But he was not. I couldn't believe someone told us to take him outside in the cold (this late fall last year). Anyway, even after 4 months, I still feel compelled to share our awful experience. We ended up eating a full dinner. Appetizer was pumpkin tempura, which was bland. Sushi deluxe was not remarkable either. The only memorable thing I take away is the rudeness. Pros: nice decor Cons: owner/manager, mediocre food more

Rude staff and bad for kids 7/6/2007

The staff actually said ""this is not a kindergarten"" to us. We were really disappointed with the service because the food was good. Too bad we will never be back. Pros: food Cons: service more

Best Edamame Outside Japan! 1/2/2003

I can't begin to say enough about this place! Tasteful, both in food quality and decor. The shabu shabu is wonderful and the portions are huge! If you go in a group, get 2 portions to share amongst 4 people! The edamame is fabulous - cooked to perfection and almost buttery. The plum wine is surprisingly fruity and light. The servers are knowledgeable, friendly, and fast. Try this place out - you won't regret it. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service Cons: Bathroom more

Sukoi!!!!!! 11/10/2002

The key ingredient to success for Shabu-shabu is freshness. This quaint japanese restaurant safely tucked in the recesses of the upper-east side is excellent. Their sashimi is fresh and vibrant. Definitely try the omakase items since they offer excellent value. The shabu shabu itself is entertaining and rustic. The special menu is focused on what is fresh and delicious. My favorite item is still the omakase chirashi since it is always fresh. more
