So far as Thai restaurants go, Sawatdee is only so-so. It was recommended to me as the only option in town when I first moved here, but since then I have discovered better and mor...

My order was incorrect. I paid an upcharge for sticky rice, which was not included. I also ordered the soup to be spicy and it was very bland. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/12/2012

My first memory of eating at Sawatdee is sometime in late 1980s. I always enjoyed the plum rum cocktail and the great pad thai which has always been served with lemon instead of lime. There were times that the ""medium"" spice level was much more spicy that I or other guests expected, but generally, ""medium"" is not very spicy for Thai food aficionados. Tonight, I ordered spring rolls (which were delicious) as well as the Panang curry with mock duck. It came with a standard bowl of white rice and was served on a square plate with lovely crisp green beans. It was very good, although I think that the serving size could have been a bit larger for the money. Nonetheless, it was excellently prepared and I was completely satisfied. The service was satisfactory on a somewhat busy evening. However, the decor needs to be redone. It hasn't changed much in 20+ years. While good, I still prefer Amazing Thailand with its more contemporary feel and larger servings than this particular restaurant. more

Dismal delivery experience 11/14/2011

Ordered food for delivery. My hotel was less than a mile away, so I thought it would be a good choice for a quick delivery. When I ordered, they estimated 45 minutes. The food finally arrived 1-1/2 hours after I placed my order! No apology from either the delivery person or the person at the restaurant (whom I called to find out where my food was). more

Phuk You Sawatdee 10/23/2010

I can put up with the occasional stomach ache - after all I'm usually in restaurants to socialize with friends. Thats what made this visit so disappointing - They kicked us out at 10.30 on a Friday night! We thought the service was pretty good, but the server automatically tacked on the tip - there were only six of us. We had to put up with the glares of angry kitchen staff before they flashed the lights on and off to give us the hint. My advice - don't even go there. There are so many better Thai places to eat in Minneapolis. Sawatdee is trading on reputation, sadly it bears no resemblance to what this place was a few years ago. more

Sawatdee 4/7/2010

Great food but if it is the first time going, you will want to make sure you understand how hot you want your food. Good thing we went with friends who had been there before. more

good food 3/31/2010

We have passed this restaurant so many times and never went in and finally ate there not too long ago and we were mad we didn't go sooner. Such good food, we both LOVED what we ordered. more

Worst Place in town 1/1/2010

Never had a worse time dining out. If you want horrible service, over-priced food, and a snotty attitude, then I guess this is the place for you. I will never be going back. Cons: everything, terrible service more

If this could have Zero stars, it would! 1/1/2010

We went there tonight, to have a nice family dinner before a movie. We were seated, given menus and water. And that was it. 40 minutes later, I started to get up because we had decided it was time to find a manager. Suddenly our waitress appeared, and asked us if we were ready to order. We asked her for a manger, and she tried to argue with us about how long we had been waiting. We got to there at 6:20, and it was now 7:00, so you do the math. The manager came, and there was no apology, nothing. We left. We were never given drinks, never even checked on for 40 minutes. My family and I will never be going back. Cons: WORST SERVICE IN THE CITY more

I Don't Know What It Is, But It's NOT Thai 9/25/2009

This used to be one of my favorite places for Thai food. I don't know what happened, but last time my wife and I were there, the food was awful. It didn't even taste like Thai. We were trying to guess what the horrible flavor was in the Pad Thai and the best we could come up with was beef broth. It actually reminded me a little of Pho. Could the place have been purchased by Vietnamese people? I don't know, but everything we ordered was horrible. The prices have always been a bit on the high side, but it used to be worth it. No longer. We'll never go back. Pros: Used to be great Cons: Horrible food, horrible service more

Does the customer get to be right here?? 10/12/2008

My first visit to this place for a friend's birthday. She loves (or should I say loved) this place and frequents it about 3 times a month. She loves spicy food and regularly orders her food at the 5 level each time she visits for the last year. When we went for her birthday, she decided to tone it down and ordered the spice at a level 3. When we got her food, hers was so spicy that she could not even eat it! more

Is this Thai? 10/10/2008

Um where do I start with this... Well if I could get past the waiter obviously being high on something and forgetting about my husband and I for 45 minutes the only thing I could complain about was the food. more

Great Neighborhood Place 4/13/2008

I've been to this Sawatdee location several times and have never been disappointed. Service can be a little slow sometimes, but the food is always great. more

Great Thai Food 12/15/2007

We LOVE this Sawatdee! We traveled all around the country and continent and still put this place in our top ten restaurants. We go here anytime we are in the warehouse district of Minneapolis and have never been disappointed. more

Great Pad Thai 3/10/2007

I'm sorry. I have never been to Thailand, or even to a ""Chinatown"" in any city, and I can't even eat spicy food. But I love, love, LOVE Pad Thai from Sawatdee. I, of course, get 0 peppers on the spice scale, but it's so good, and it is never greasy. The chicken is always white meat, and clearly recognizable as such, which is not always the case at some Asian restaurants. Their spring rolls are really good, too. I've eaten at every location in the Twin Cities, and I have never been disappointed. The service is OK, because I usually go at an off-time, like 3 in the afternoon, and there are only one or two servers there. That's not their fault. When I have been there at dinner time, the service was spot-on. I have gone with people who like spicy food, and they order it spicy, and they like it, too. Pros: Good Thai Food!!! more

Bland Thai 9/25/2006

My parents and I each ordered individual dishes and all three of them were horribly bland and cold. Possibly worse Thai food I have ever had, and I have eaten at much shadier hole-in-the-wall places. Cons: bland food/overpriced more

Great Thai food 8/17/2006

I recently visited this restaurant during a night out with friends. The ambience is good and the food is spectacular. Pros: Food, Service, Parking more

Excellent Service 5/1/2006

I enjoyed my dining experience at Sawatdee. I am from Atlanta and we have several great Thai restaurants but what stood out to me about Sawatdee was the spice scale since it made ordering easier. The food was good (I had the Lob Esan & my business partner had Shrimp Pad Thai) but what was most impressive was the service. Our server was a short-haired young girl who had an excellent knowledge of the menu & was very friendly. I would recommend Sawatdee to anyone looking for a quiet, yet spicy, meal! Pros: Service, Price more
