THE BEST FOOD IN SF Peter Bruce Photo

Worst

I went there yesterday using Dine About Town and I was not that impressed with the food for the most part. My boyfriend got the meatloaf, but the chef seemed to forget the ""loaf...

Fabulous gourmet comfort food............. 4/24/2006

Since my co-workers and I discovered Sauce, we're there at least once a week and our group gets bigger every time! We all agree, we've never tasted anything we didn't absolutely love at Sauce. The only problem is, all the appetizers are so good and the portions so generous, we don't always make it to the main menu! And quality is never sacrificed for quantity; it's obvious how much the chef cares about the food and enjoys feeding everyone. The cocktails are fabulous, with fresh ingredients and creative bartenders. The staff is friendly and never rushes you out so they can pack people inlike so many places do. Sauce is not to be missed, whether you're a local or a tourist. If you want to experience some of the best food and coolest people S.F. has to offer, Sauce is the place to be! Pros: easy parking, friendly staff, ample portions more

Comfort food, but not comforting. 4/16/2006

Horrible value on food and service. Asian Pear Salad - the pear had no taste because pears aren't in season right now. It should not have been on the menu. Fish & chips - for $18.00 go somewhere else. They give you one 4 inch fillet and chips were soggy. Doughnut holes - this was only redeeming part of meal, but too much sugar made it too sweet. Service - rude and unattentive. They kept the door open even though we requested it be shut because it cold outside. Cons: host ignored us, waiter ignored us, overpriced, tasteless more

most disappointing meal in SF 3/11/2006

For $15-20 a plate, a SF restaurant should meet this standard: all the dishes should be tasty, carefully done, and artfully presented. At least one dish in the meal should offer a pleasant surprise that makes you think about what your tasting or how the chef managed to achieve it. Sauce fell short of this standard. By a mile. We tried the dishes most highly recommended by the reviewers on this site. Our entree (which we could barely stomach) and dessert could have come from from a can. Even in the relatively tasty appetizers, none of the flavors were elaborated in a meaningful way. And Sauce has a major problem with texture: everything is mushy. Even the crab wontons (otherwise quite nice) weren't crispy. And all the accompanying namesake sauces were bland or completely predictable. Pros: good service more

Great food, excellent service... 10/13/2005

We were pleasantly surprise to have high-end version of originals such as fried mushrooms and Mac and Cheese.. yummi!!! Great wine (try the Vacqueras which is about $38 a bottle)... I can't wait to go back. more

Hayes Valley Gem 10/12/2005

Sauce is the perfect friendly neighborhood restaurant. Casual enough to stop in after work for a cocktail & chat with the friendly bartenders and .... nice enough to impress a first date without killing your wallet. Chef Ben rocks the kitchen with his maverick spin on reliable favorites. The mushroom fries will knock your knickers off - YUM!!! Pros: mushroom fries, donut desert, friendly staff Cons: parking at times more

Sauce is good food 10/2/2005

Was very impressed by the American Classics such as Mac N Cheese and Meat Loaf. Beautiful decor makes this a great place for dates and the friendly owners and bartenders make this a great place for dinner with friends. The folks are friendly and treat you like an honored guest. Chef Ben is a genius with steaks and seafood. I plan to make this my ""Family Resturant"". Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Wine List Cons: Parking is OK more

Great for events... 8/8/2005

We had our wedding rehearsal at Sauce and could not have been more pleased. The owners were very easy to work with during the planning process and showed a level of flexibility and enthusiasm that I wish I could have seen from all of our vendors. We had about 30 people so we used the ""Supper Club"" back room for our greeting, which was perfect in size and decor. Service was prompt, efficient, friendly, and extremely attentive. The apppetizers were a hit but did not outshine the entrees, which were served all at the same time and just as everyone had ordered. The quality of the food was very, very good. Since the wedding we've gotten many, many compliments on our choice, and have been referring people to Sauce for a great dining experience. Pros: Food!, Service, Decor Cons: Parking more

Amazing! 8/7/2005

We took a friend here for a birthday on a recommendation from a friend and were pleasantly surprised at what a gem this place was!!! The food was unique and interesting. The Beggar's Purse and Sesame Shrimp apetizers were stellar. The Mac and cheese was delicious! And as the waiter put it, ""Everyone orders the dessert sampler!"" For good reason. The service was even more impressive. The owners of the restaurant personally attended to us, as did the chef. And we were served complimentary port for my friend's birthday! What a refreshing restaurant! I will definitely go back to try more of the wonderful meal offerings! Everyone should go! Pros: Service, Fun dishes more

Uninspiring 7/21/2005

Three of us went to Sauce after reading in San Francisco magazine that it was one of the three best new restaraunts of 04-05. We went early and had no problem being seated. Ana , our server was attentive and knowledgeable. The place has a nice feel to it and the room in back would be great for cocktail parties. The food however, was disappointing. The portabello mushroom fries were drab but the crab wontons were good. The Mac and Cheese was more like an alfredo and the chicken was dry. The truffle grilled cheese with the tomato bisque was by far the best thing we tasted. The diver scallop salad looked great coming out but , for me the scallops were far overdone. We ordered the cookie dough dessert and were again less than impressed. Really surprised about the best new restaraunt monniker. Pros: decor, service Cons: food more

Go for the Bar 7/12/2005

The food was alright. Except for the Guiness Milk Shake... Yummy! It seemed like they were going too far with the fancy ""comfort food"". The bar scene was much more interesting. It was kind of nice in that the dining area was pretty chill. Not real noisy or bustling. You could enjoy a conversation without yelling. Pros: Chill Ambience, Bar, Open Late more

A true treasure and pleasure 4/11/2005

I live in Chicago and came into town for the weekend not knowing where to go and found Sauce after the symphony. I have to say that what makes this place so special is not only is the food fantastic but the people that run this place rock. I felt like I was home in Chitown. I will be back! more

Comfort Food that makes you smile 3/11/2005

I accidentally found this gem while walking the other night -- how lucky I was!! The staff was as warm as the decor and I felt right at home. Try the tomato bisque and the meatloaf! YUMMMMMY! I also love the that the great guys who run this eatery are family -- you can tell this is a labor of love. I will be back!! Pros: Atmosphere, Kitchen open late, Food Rocks! more

Friendly service and good food 3/6/2005

A few friends and I tried Sauce the other night because we live in/near the neighborhood and were curious about the new kid on the block. What a great call! Sauce has warm and inviting atmosphere, great cocktails, really good food, and some of the friendliest service I have experienced in a long time -the chef and the manager/owner both stopped by our table to chat and thank us for stopping by. I love the fact that Sauce serves food late night too - we need more restaurants doing that in SF! I highly recommend the meatloaf and the decadent mac and cheese. Pros: Tasty comfort food, Warm atmosphere, Full bar! Cons: Decor could be hipper more

Great Sauce 2/26/2005

A friend of mine in Tahoe recommended I try this new restaurant and it lived up to the hype. The bacon wrapped scallops and bacon wrapped meatloaf were amazing. Delicious cocktails, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Its a great place to bring a date and I will definatly be going back the next time I'm in the city. Pros: Delicious, Excelent Cocktails, Great Service more

Exquisite comfort food on a date night 2/22/2005

Was looking for a place close to Davies symphony hall, and sauce was highly recommended by friends. Enjoyed all the food that I tried, including the savory tomato soup/grilled cheese, mushroom fries, clam chowder, and crab wontons! I wanted to make it to the main course, but we absolutely stuffed ourselves with appetizers. But we kept room for desert, and thoroughly enjoyed the cinnamon doughnuts (awesome) and the PBJ! The wait staff was warm and comforting, the wine was superb, and the food rocked. Pros: Great food, Close to Van Ness, Ambience Cons: Seemed empty on a Fri more

Weak sauce 2/19/2005

I guess you have to be apart of a select group to get any real service at this place. Our table was pretty much a distraction to the obvious pals of the restaurant staff who accounted for the audience majority. Sorry we crashed your party... Food was a little bland and on the chilly side; it was nearly impossible to get a drink. We regret not walking out. more

Cool night out 1/27/2005

Went to Sauce to meet a couple of friends for drinks and dinner. We had heard about it from friends who went to a holiday party there and had to check it out -- you never know if the holiday party reviews were just booze induced. Not so at all. The bartender was awesome, serving up margaritas from scratch. The chef came to our table twice during the night - and his PBJ dessert is a MUST HAVE. We were blown away and left feeling like we knew a lot of people there. Excellent. more

Fantastic 1/24/2005

Sauce is a fantastic find - whether it be a pre-opera or post-work dining. The menu presents old-favorites reincarnated into modern delicacies. The staff is friendly, unpretentious and knowledgeable. Just a short walk from the Van Ness muni/BART station - quite convenient. Dip into sauce! more

Yes Please 1/23/2005

Sauce is a great new restaurant/bar/destination spot in Hayes Valley. The decor is warm and inviting, the food is exceptional and reasonably-priced. But the atmosphere is what makes Sauce stand out. If you don't know them already, you are almost guaranteed to make three new friends with the owner-operators by the time you leave after your first meal, which may not be too early in the evening since the kitchen is open nice and late. This place is only going to get more popular as the word gets out, which is fine by me. Because on nights when the back lounge is open, the music is playing, and the cocktails are flowing -- you may just wind up cancelling your other plans and staying right where you are! Pros: Centrally located, Food, Atmosphere Cons: , Parking may be tough more

Great night out 1/23/2005

Its not just the 'sauce' that makes this place a Hayes Valley gem... aside from the liquid concoctions the friendly bar staff whip up, the quality cuisine is a treat for the taste buds, especially the unique desserts... must save room for at least one. Stick around after dinner, the swanky back room makes for a one stop evening to either chill out, or cut a little rug. I found it a great space for a private party too. Pros: great crowd, nice staff, reasonable prices more
