I am very pleased with the hair cut the student gave me. My hair was already pretty short, and I wanted to keep the length. The stylist listened to me and kept the length. And the best part is she gave me a more sophisticated look. The student who did my brows listened to her instructor, which was good because I really like the instructor's approach to doing my brows. I've had my brows done millions of times (nearly), but no one has ever done them like this. Very natural looking. Overall, my entire experience is five stars, including the reception and the instructors and the students. more

Fantabulous Once Again! 12/14/2011

This is my third visit to this awesome place of greatness...and I was more than pleased with how Ms Bailey listened to what my concerns and complaints were...as far as my hair goes. I wanted the length...but I was overheating due to massive amounts of hair. I do not know how she was able to cut so much of my hair off, yet still have the length I desire... and... I still have quite a bit of hair....however no more overheating! Thank you Ms Bailey for your many gifts and talents...and thank you for sharing them with me. I love my new hair style. Happy Holidays to you all at the SF Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology. I will see you next year! Peace..... more

I'm a regular 12/5/2011

I come here often to get a haircut, makeup for a photo shoot or big event, and a facial. It's very affordable and welcoming and has a good vibe and great customer service. Sometimes hair takes a bit longer than I would have wanted, but the stylists are students, so it is understandable that they will take longer than a professional that has been cutting hair for a few years. All in all, I love this place and will keep coming here. more

Color and cut. 12/5/2011

I love my new hair color and cut! The women who worked on my hair was very professional! She took the time to discuss my color choices and hair cut with me. She told me what colors would look best with my skin tone and a hair cut that would look best for my face shape. I am not familiar with the part of the city where the school is located and I got lost. My hairstylist stood outside the building and guided me to the school! I thought that was a very caring thing to do! I will definitely go back! more

Mens's haircuts 12/1/2011

My sister is a licenced beautician in Wisconsin and I was her "guinea pig" when she took her licence exam. It's always nice to be of service while also being served. I have had several students doing my hair and have always been given very satisfactory haircuts. The last two ladies were especially helpful in trying to get my hair just the way I like it. more

Eyebrow Was 12/1/2011

Sadly the last visit a few months back will be my final visit at the school. I am convinced after the 1 hour 15 minute appointment to get my eyebrows waxed, I had a first time student, doing eyebrow waxing for (what seemed to me like) the very first time. And while I understand students handle the appointments (knowing this, because this was my 5th + appointment) this past time was the final final..... I will spend the extra dollars to get better brows. Sadly. But thank you for all the past GOOD waxes :) more

Always Happy When I Leave! 11/29/2011

I no longer live in SF and I sorely miss going to the SF Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology! Every time I had my hair done, my stylist took a genuine interest in me and gave me a new look to be thrilled about. It takes some time for cuts, but to me, that was time to relax, and I enjoyed it. I had my color done once (only once because I was a student on a budget!) and my stylist mixed a special color that he felt matched my personality and style. How awesome is that? No question about it, this is the only place I will go in San Francisco to get my hair done. more

BEWARE NEW STUDENTS 8/10/2011

NEW STUDENTS BEWARE!! Do NOT go to this establishment. My daughter was a student there and she got nothing but the run around from the staff and the school director/owner Dee Dee was never available to help her. In my opinion? They are only looking for money and they do not care about their students. My daughter has since transferred to another and REAL Paul Mitchell school (this one isn't..they are just ""affiliated"") It is sad that grown women do not know how to handle their business and care enough about the students trying to make a career for themselves that they treat people with such disdain. BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE!!! more

Love this place! 10/26/2008

First off, you would not realize you were in a beauty school unless someone told you. The girls I have visited so far have been really professional and sweet. Definitely add at least double the time you would spend at a normal salon, but well worth it! So far, I have gone for 2 haircuts, 2 brow waxes and a facial and will definitely go back! I recommend this to all my friends who waste sometimes $300 on a cut and dye, on something that fades or grows out after a couple months at most anyway! I am saving my money by coming here, plus I tip well so feel like I am doing something good for the aspiring stylists! Pros: service Cons: timeliness more

you get what you pay for ... sometimes you get even more! like said in the last review ... if you're picky about your hair then quit being a CHEAPASS and go to a PROFESSIONAL salon with people that are already licensed and have been doing hair professionally. at this school they call they're students ""FUTURE professionals"" DUHHH! this is a GREAT place to get hair services when you have the right amount of patience, time and openness. YOU'RE GOING TO A SCHOOL not a SALON!! its a learning facility for them and a great deal for us! i've been getting my hair cut AND colored there for the past 4 years and so far so good! i think thats because i'm not asking for too much from a student expecting a makeover!! so if you're the type of person to get a simple cut or color done and you're not someone with jet black hair trying to be platinum blonde or are trying to get over all highlights with hair down to the bottom of your back then maybe you'll apprecitate this place even more. then again i've also seen many a creative cut and color walk out those doors that rival many high end salons! also take the opportunity to get your makeup touch up complimentary after your great cut and/or color ... oh and especially after a facial! the school carries a great mineral makeup line too. let's just get something straight... 2/6/2007

SFIEC IS A SCHOOL!!!!!!!! so of course the stylists may run late, or mess up once...that is how they learn!! that is why you sign a waiver!!!! and 9 out of 10 times the clients are extremely happy...9 out of 10 ain't bad. i graduated from there in july and i recieved the best training that money can buy. I have been working at a salon for 3 months and i am already fully booked and have a wait list so that has to say something about the training i received! so for those of you that want quality for less and aren't in any kind of rush, this is for you. If you are very picky and crazy about your hair, skin, whatever...stop being cheap and go to a salon that will charge you an arm and leg, and try to be more understanding. And one more thing, while i attended SFIEC, i had the cutest hair that i have ever had, and *gasp!* students did it!!! that says a lot!! so please don't let these angry reviews persuade you to go elsewhere!! afterall, most people will write a review only when they are angry!! not when they are happy! Horrible, horrible, horrible! 11/14/2006

this has to be by far the worst cosmetology school and salon. The employees are terribly rude, the teachers don't supervise enough, and they are NEVER on time! If you need a day of beauty dont just walk, but run somewhere else! Pros: the students are polite Cons: the front desk staff, the location, the atmosphere, the music, the wait time more

A great value 5/9/2005

After seeing an ad in SFWeekly I decided to check out a facial service. I had the Treatment Facial which was amazing. The students are so attentive and really do a great job. The instructors who supervise everything are very professional and everything is so clean. There are few spas in the city as clean as this place, believe me, I have been to most of them. I have been back several times now and each time have had a very relaxing time. My pedicure was an incredible experience and my haircut turned out great. I'll be back for more. Pros: Clean Environment, Very Friendly, Very informative Cons: Services take longer, They graduate more

Good for a lot of services 10/5/2004

I've had a lot of great experiences here. They are students, so they try very hard to do a good job and please the customer. Their supervisors are friends and ever-present (with one exception I will mention later). I've had great facials, awesome pedicures and manicures, and good waxes (brows, underarm, bikini, leg). The atmosphere resembles a nice urban spa, the people are customer-service oriented, and the prices are low. One drawback...because they are students, they are slow. And I will never get my haircut there because the supervision was not enough to prevent a pretty lopsided haircut. Pros: Inexpensive, Attentive, Friendly, Great skin & nail svc Cons: , Not great haircuts more
