I've also been greatly impressed with the seafood at Sammy?s Fishbox on City Island, which has been excellent every time I've been there. Other seafood restaurants in the area are okay but honestly they just don?t compare. I hold Sammy?s to a very high standard and they have never disappointed me, whenever I recommend them, I only get a big thank you from those I recommended. I was recently invited to meet a friend for dinner at Sammy's on City Island. To tell you the truth I didn't expect much on City Island in the way of good food, to my pleasant surprise the food wasn't good it was spectacular. I will never travel to the City and pay 10 dollars in tolls and 40 to park now that I have found Sammy's in the Bronx.This is truly a beautiful restaurant with the food to match. more

I've never felt compelled to write a restaurant review online until today. Yesterday was me and my boyfriend's 3-year anniversary, and we were looking for a place to go to that neither of us had ever been. Him being born and raised in NY, it wasn't that easy, until we thought we shoud head to city island, where neither of us had ever set foot. We originally had reservations at another restaurant, but last minute, a friend called and recommended Sammy's Shrimp Box. \r \r We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer. It was light and crispy and really good! Then we had the Crab and Lobster feast for two...but it should have been feast for four, because we didn't get through half of the plate...and we are seriously big eaters, too. The crab legs and lobster were seasoned perfectly, the meat was fresh, and there was a lot of it too. Considering that a meal like that would cost over 200 bucks in the city, 82 dollars isn't bad. \r \r Our waiter, Steven (Stephano) was also really great. He offered to change our salad (which we didnt want) to something else, and he even sent us home with free cake because we were too full to eat it in the restaurant. I've never seen someone so friendly! We didnt even have to tell him that it was our annversary, and yet it was a night to remember. We will definintely be back. more

I love baked clams , to me its a mark of a good chef. There either great or terrible with no in between as far as I am concerned. The Baked clams at Sammy's are a 10. for that matter so is the rest of the menu especially the shell fish. I love the huge selection of surf and turf dishes. Had a great meal here the other night. Food is what I would describe as ultra fresh Seafood . We were a party of 10 and everything we had was delicious. In addition, despite being traditional New England seafood food, all the dishes had a little flare to them. Atmosphere is really unique as well. For fantastic New England seafood in a festive atmosphere After four decades in the food business, Sammy?s has earned its reputation for exceptional meals and pampering customers. I always run into his loyal customers when ever I talk great restaurants. He has sensational fried or broiled seafood. Other restaurant favorites include a crabmeat and shrimp-stuffed filet. My favorite is Sammy Special (jumbo shrimp broiled in Worcestershire, butter, lemon and spices) Just writing this review makes me hungry for a return visit to Sammy?s. more

Ate at Sammy?s fishbox on City Island. Excellent. Martinis were made to order, no blenders. Calamari was tender and delicious, not over cooked. Ahi Tuna and Stuffed filet of sole were also very very good. Portions were extremely generous leaving little room for the complimentary desert our waiter offered. Enjoyed the whole evening. I travel extensively for my company and dine the world over. I probably eat out 250 times a year so I think I am a pretty good judge of restaurant?s. I try to get up to Sammy's on City Island whenever I am in the big apple. I have eaten at most of manhattans so called top seafood places, but nothing matches the food served at Sammy's. They also have a wonderful staff to go along with food and decor.. My favorite dish is the crab feast for two, I order it for myself. Its unbelievable. Great bar and deserts to. Sammy has the most amazing food! I recommend this place to everyone - once you go, you will become a regular! I love this place. I feel very much at home. The staff is friendly to a fault. They just wanted to make our visit memorable and they did. The food as usual was delicious and plentiful. I especially enjoy the friend seafood combination. My children always share a paella, , which is enough for two hardy appetites and two meals home the next day. I am so happy to have such a wonderful restaurant right in my home town of the Bronx.. more

Im from new jersey, and have not been to city island since I moved here 10 plus years ago. My wife and I were lifelong customers of Titos. Of course we were more then disapointed when we visited recently and found that titos no longer exist. So instead of driving home hungry we decided to stay and eat at what is now known as the shrimp box. i am not much of a seafood eater but to my suprise their was a latin menu! We were alitle taken back by the prices but were extremely happy by the beautiful dishes and huge portions. The price was then small compared to the dish we both had. my wife had leftovers for days. the staff was great i even recognized a few old timers from titos. it maid us feel right at home. Being a chef I could apreciate a good meal when I see one and this was top quality. I was suprised also by the upkeep of the restaurant. it was MUCH cleaner and redone beautifully compared to titos. our waitor steven was a great guy, my wife had a crush on him and the manager john came to our table to see how our meal was which is always a great of well kept restaurant. Great atmosphere. Great lighting and clean area. FOOD WAS delicious and frozen drinks were much better then titos. Although i loved titos, this is a new favorite of mine. I highly recomend the pina coladas. ALSO, try visiting sometime before the holiday is over, the place is decorated like nothing we have ever seen. they must have really spent a ton on an interior decorater, they even painted the mirrors and put up a tree. I visited my son and he brought me to City Island. This is one of his favorite places and he wanted to share his favorite City Island restaurant with me Sammy's fishbox. The Fish & Chips are by far the very best fried fish I have ever had, and I?m from Dublin. I would really recommend this restaurant. We ate here in December 2008 and it was probably best value meal we ate in a long long time. The homemade paella was perfect, the house wine good and the service was very friendly. What's more the bill came in much less than I thought it would be based upon the huge portions served whilst leaving us exceptionally well fed and enough leftover for two lunches.\r We spoke to the table next to us they were visiting from England and were having a good time. I'm not usually one to write reviews, but after being a loyal City Island customer for decades, this is a must post! Sammys Fish Box has always been me and my husbands favorite restaurant on City Island. After retiring to Florida for 3 years and recently returning to NY, I have found heaven. SAMMYS SHRIMP BOX. As a welcome home dinner, my 3 wonderful children took my husband and I out to Sammys Fish Box. What a disaster! I do realize that it was August, a very busy time on City Island, but the wait was ridiculous, the hostesses were downright rude, the waitstaff were ignornant and not well spoken. I agree with everyone elses reviews that it is also very tight in there. The tables seemed incredibly close together. The oysters were not properly cleaned as well. And after complaining, the manager (a male in his late 30's or early 40's) was incredibly not understanding and a tad bit nasty. With complete dissapointment we decided to never return to Sammys again, that is until I was invited to a shower at the Shrimp Box a few weeks later. I was hesitant at first but, What A PLEASANT suprise! The food was out of this world, the waitstaff was fantastic! The atmosphere was beautiful, not crowded and immaculate! Our waiter David was impeccable! And the managerial staff was beyond delightful. The manager Jon? came into the room and was terrific. He was an absolute doll. I took an order or crabcakes to go, as they were highly recommended, and they were DELICIOUS! TRULY THIS RESTAURANT WAS A GODSEND FOR CITY ISLAND! I hope they stick around for a long time, because I will stay retired right here in NY for the Shrimp Box. more

My wife and I travel on business up and down the east coast and whenever we visit a new city the first thing we do is look for a seafood restaurant. Most times than not we are disappointed because nothing comes close to our favorite neighborhood restaurant, Sammy's on City Island in the Bronx. The Lobster, king crab and shrimp are the best. I hate to recommend it because its busy enough but I don't waqnt to be selfish good new should be shared. more
