Best

Went here over the weekend with several friends for my bachelorette party, and we had a fantastic time. Everyone we spoke to was friendly and accomodating, and our waiter, Carlos,...

Worst

Went for a birthday party and there was nothing special on the menu. Paella was served with the rice barely cooked and lacking of ingredients. Some of the tapas were over cooked a...

...... 8/23/2003

Went there last night. The food was great but the music was loud and hip-hop and the wait was ridiculous and the prices were out of this world. But I will still go back for the pinchos Pros: food Cons: prices, long wait, too loud more

FLAT OUT RUDE 8/10/2003

Unless you like getting forced out the door before your check hits the table, I would stay far away from this place. Went with friends for dinner, and spent quite a bit-multiple courses, rounds of drinks, and desserts. Still not enough to be respected by the staff or managers. Other reviews are here from people with similar experiences. The people running this place need to learn to respect their customers, because there are plenty of other fine restaurants in the city that do. Cons: Rude, Disrespectful, Overrated more

Skip mains.. 8/6/2003

Slow service, the waiter didn't seem to care at all.. took us 20 min b4 he came over to ask us what we wanted. Ham coquette, duck over toast, pork loin over toast were good. Main courses-pork chop with potato chips and lamb shank weren't so good. i suggest ordering only tapas and sagria and skip on main dishes. Cons: service more

BEST TAPAS IN NYC 4/28/2003

Been to many tapas restaurants, but this one has the best variety and flavor of any tapas restaurant I have been to in the States. Even rivals some of my favorites in Spain. The Sangria is a must have. Don't miss this one. Pros: Shrimp in garlic, Sangria more

Viva Sangria! 4/16/2003

I recently went to Sala for my birthday dinner with a party of six. We all agreed that the sangria was very good (increase the size of the pitchers!). The rustic feel of the restaurant coupled with the hint of latin music were the perfect combination for a relaxed setting. The menu was limited but the selections were very good. Desert was a treat. Try the flan! Service was very informative and prompt. Overall, Sala provides a the essential ingredients for a lovely evening replete with good food and good times! more

Great all around 3/26/2003

What a find! I went with two of my friends and we had the best time there. The ambience is very nice. The service was awesome. The food was delicious. If you like tapas. this is the place to go. more

so so 3/6/2003

I didn't eat, so I can't comment on the food. But they do have the BEST sangria I've ever had. Downstairs dance floor was a joke... way too small, way too crowded, music was so-so - mostly hip-hop but a lot of what you can hear on the radio. more

Is Sala a restaurant? 3/1/2003

The owner of Sala needs to decide: do I run a bar that serves tapas or a tapas restaurant with a bar area? On a recent visit, the so-called restaurant was overrun with smokers (Mayor Bloomberg should have this place on his list as soon as the smoking ban takes effect at the end of the month). There is no delineation between the restaurant and the bar. I was seated at the table closest to the bar, so I spent the entire evening surrounded by overflow from the bar (who for some inexplicable reason refused to sit or stand in the part of the bar farthest from the restaurant, which was uncrowded and had seating available). It's really too bad. Great space, good food, accommodating service should add up to a good time, but I felt as if in the middle of a fraternity party during my last visit. more

yum 1/27/2003

Went to Sala for a birthday dinner - it was perfect for a group dinner. The atmosphere was nice and cozy... The sangria was delicious and the food was great, there was something for everyone. Try the dates wrapped in bacon... yum. more

Best Sangria and GREAT soup! 1/11/2003

This has officially beat out La Paella (a neighboring Tapas restaurant) for the best sangria although it didn't do as well on the food. But although Paella is a better value (cheaper, better food), Sala's tapas were still very good. There's a little cute lounge downstairs and a long bar on entrance so its a good place to go to eat and to chill. And oh yeh, order the soup..its delicious Pros: Good Food, Best Sangria, Romantic Cons: Expensive, Small Portions, Slow Service more

DJ Dan is AWESOME 12/15/2002

SALA has great food, a great vibe, and the DJ in the lounge (Daniel) has great taste in music. He sets the right mood everytime. more

Cool setting and good sangria 11/19/2002

Sala has a great feel to it.--Rustic yet warm. The sangria tasted very good even after I had had one two many. However,I was disappointed with the tapas selection--everything was very traditional which meant there was not much variety or creativity in the menu. The dishes were also a little heavy. Service was unremarkable. Prices are reasonable. more

tough one to call 11/18/2002

Food was very good, although were expecting a little more. Service has a lot to be desired. Music was good, btu a touch loud but I didn't notice it after awhile. Downstairs looked OK, but small. more

Savrosa! 10/29/2002

I went to Sala with a few friends for my birthday. It was perfect. I work in the restaurant industry and I am always looking for places to eat that are fun and still appetizing. The food was wonderful. I even went with a friend who lived in Spain for a few years. He agreed the food was authentic. Our server was nice and prompt with our food. We had a great time. I definitely recommend going to Sala especially with a group of friends! Pros: Affordable, Tasty, Fun more

Just like Valencia 9/17/2002

I recently went to Sala with friends for dinner and had the best time. The owner was sooooo accomidating there was a private party downstairs and let us know when it was over so we could dance downstairs. The Pallella was the best I had outside of Valencia, Spain. The make it the traditional way--dry with seafood--lots of saffron. Pros: Reasonably Priced Cons: Hard to find more

Did the staff write the last 3 reviews? 7/24/2002

Don't share the same excitement about the place as Monica, Robert, etc. do. Okay, but not as special as they claim. more

FLAN TO DIE FOR 7/2/2002

We thought we were back in Spain. The food was fantastic, and the flan was the best we'd ever tried. Our wait person, Monica was great not to mention beautiful. What a find!!! Pros: flan/food, atmosphere, excellent $$ for NY more

SHRIMP AND SANGRIA 6/29/2002

VERY VERY reasonablly priced. Robert, the maitre'd was wonderful. Sangria was completely kick-ass and the shrimp in garlic was wonderful as was the white asparagus. THe atmosphere was cool, but the bartender could have smiled more. I would give it a whirl if you don't mind weird dishes. You definately get your money's worth, but it wasn't the best dinner i have ever had. more

good sangria and fun! 6/18/2002

We went for a friend's birthday, it was fun with a group of people. The sangria and the tapas were delicious, but the paella was a little bland- stick to the tapas!!! more

Nice Place, Good Food 6/17/2002

Went on a weeknight for drinks and appetizers. The sangria was really good (and did its job; the selection of tapas was somewhat limited but I tried them all --and they were great! Not only was the food tasty but the portions were large for tapas. Also, the ambience is quaint and aptly reminiscent of a restaurant in Spain. more

"Feel like going out but not sure you want a full meal? Consider this suavely rustic tapas bar on the Bowery and take your pick of pinchos (small bites), such as shrimp-and-crab-meat-stuffed pimento or octupus vinaigrette; raciones (medium-size tapas), such as mussels in white wine or tortilla espanola; or entrees, such as halibut sauteed with pancetta and leeks, seared tuna with caper sauce, or adobo-spiced pork chops. The new downstairs lounge adds a touch of modern Spain to the old-world decor of the rest of the restaurant: it feels like current-day Barcelona, especially when the DJ spins until 4am". -TimeOut

"Sala...hot, sexy and very Spanish Bowery Iberian yearling with moody, grotto-like digs and a crowd of beautiful hipsters sharing terrific tapas & quaffing sangria, all for a modest price." -ZAGAT

  • The Scene
Go after work and you'll wonder if it's open, but go after dark and you'll wonder if it ever closes. Sala (Spanish for "living room") is designed to look like an Old-World alleyway, with iron lanterns, a rustic brick archway and an open kitchen with tiled roof. Pretty patrons complete the alfresco fantasy, exotic and alluring enough to make it feel more like a movie set than a tapas bar.

    The Food
The Spanish cuisine is far better than it needs to be in a place where most believe it's sexier to snack or sip, than to tear into a Segovian-style leg of lamb. The pinchos platter gives a taste of all six delightful apps, including flaky battered cod and balsamic-dressed sliced duck. Some look to seafood paella or peppercorn-glazed rib eye for the main course; others cut to the chase and look to the downstairs lounge.
