Went here over the weekend with several friends for my bachelorette party, and we had a fantastic time. Everyone we spoke to was friendly and accomodating, and our waiter, Carlos,...

Went for a birthday party and there was nothing special on the menu. Paella was served with the rice barely cooked and lacking of ingredients. Some of the tapas were over cooked a...

Great place 4/29/2006

I always enjoy going to Sala. It's not too crowded, has great decor, waiters and bartenders are laidback and friendly. Great sangria too. The menu has a wide variety of unique small dishes (which are delicious!). Pros: Great ambiance, Not too crowded, Friendly staff Cons: None! more

Great value if you go at the right time 3/25/2006

I highly recommend checking out Sala during 1/2-price tapas times. The value was incredible, the atmosphere was quiet and laid back and the service was great. I ordered the chorizo and if you would love to eat a big plate of sausage for $5, you won't be disappointed. Everything was delcious and the place was quite empty - we had the lounge to ourselves. Pros: tapas, value, service Cons: usually pricey more

Great time at Sala 3/6/2006

I took my girlfriend to Sala for her Bday, and we had a great time. I heard it gets crowded, so I made reservations and had no problems with seating. Our waitress was great, she made us feel very welcome, made recommendations, made sure not to rush us and let us enjoy the dinner. The food was very goodwe tried a bunch of small plates and 2 entrees, and lots of sangria. Everything was very well made and we left full and happy. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. If youre like us and like to try a little bit of everything and like to get drinks too, you'll get away with about $75p/pthe place looks very cool too. If youre a group of people call ahead for prompter seating. If its two of you call ahead and ask for a further away corner, the place gets noisy Pros: Food, Service, atmosphere Cons: Parking, a little noisy more

best tapas 12/28/2005

The service is just ok but the food will make you keep coming back. Its a bit pricey for the portions but, once you've taste it you'll forget about the price. Try the grilled squid... or the garlic shrimp! It is bangin! Pros: good appetizer, good sangrias Cons: expensive more

Great place for private party!!! 12/18/2005

I had my boyfriend's surprise 40th birthday at Sala and couldn't have asked for a more perfect place. The service was outstanding, the food was great, the Sangria was tasty, and the atmosphere was perfect in the downstairs lounge. We had a private bar and sound system. Can't wait to go back for dinner !! I highly recommend Sala for private parties!!!!!!!! Pros: Service, Food , Atmosphere Cons: NONE more

Muy Divertido (Very Fun!) 11/8/2005

Its all about the Happy Hour here with half priced tapas and half priced drinks. The tapas are wonderful from the dates to the Spanish omelette. The service is awesome and the ambiance is cool with hip Spanish hits playing in the background, with a very darkly lit decor. Sure its a bit out of the way down the Bowery, but its one of the best tapa deals in the area. Pros: Food, Music, Service Cons: Prices, Parking more

Great Birthday dinner 7/23/2005

I organized a birthday dinner here. The staff was very helpful and accomodating to my group. The tapas, entrees, and desserts were very tasty. The servings were actually bigger than we expected. Sala definitely made my birthday dinner and enjoyable and memorable experience. Pros: ambience, tasty tapas, good service more

Sala a must 5/7/2005

Went here a few weeks ago and it was fantastic. Had a homey kind of feel to it. Its kind of loud and the tables are on top of each other but its still a good date spot. The fried goat cheese appetizer with honey is a must and might be the best goat cheese I have ever had. The duck was fantastic also and I was a big fan of the mashed potatoes. The only problem was my girlfriend didnt want her french fries that came with her steak so she kept helping herself to my potatoes. If you get the steak bag the fries and tell them you want the mashed potatoes. Pros: Killer goat cheese, Average prices Cons: Can get very crowded more

horrible time ! 2/28/2005

Cool atmosphere but such a let down. Our waiter was horrible; so rude and disinterested. He seemed like everyone around him was a nuisance to his existence. The sangria's - watered down. menu - uneventful, small. the food - not worth the price. Pros: Cool atmosphere Cons: not worth the price, rude service more

great for groups 2/15/2005

went to sala recently to celebrate a friend's birthday. we were a group of eight and even though not everyone arrived on time, the servers were very accommodating and allowed us to reserve our table until everyone arrived. the food is tasty, although the choices are somewhat limited, and the setting is very warm and cozy, similar to rustic, spanish villa. Pros: tasty food, cozy setting more

great tapas 1/31/2005

wonderful tapas and pinchos. the dates were excellent. and great sangria, although the pitcher was on the small side. went with a group of 10 on a friday, had no problems. wonderful service. can't wait to go back! Pros: good sandria, nice ambiance, good tapas Cons: small pitcher more

incredible 1/24/2005

I absolutely love this place... we went here for drinks one night and then came back for dinner on a Tuesday. Service was absolutely incredible, our server was warm and helpful, prompt and appeared at just the right times. We ordered a pitcher of sangria, which was yes, expensive at $24, but well worth it. We then ordered an eggplant appetizer and fried goat cheese (13) which were both delicious but small. For entrees we got the pork, which was superb- sweet, with pears and homemade crispy potatoes- large enough that I couldnt' finish it all. The whole experience was incredible- the atmosphere makes you feel like you are sitting outdoors in a Spanish village... I highly recommend this place for a date. Pros: service, food, ambience more

Tasty Tapas 1/16/2005

I recently visited Sala for the first time for a good friend's birthday shindig. Liking, but not loving tapas that I had had in the past in Spain, I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy every dish at Sala. Unlike some tapas, theirs were all bursting with flavor and were very varied in makeup. To top it off, the service was excellent. I will definitely return. Pros: Great Food, Excellent Service more

Simply Delicious 1/9/2005

Food was amazing and the ambiance and service complemented the experience so well. Highly recommend ordering the dates and/or the fried goat cheese. The place was unpretentious yet the scene was so 'happening'. We left at 11pm and the place was still packed with customers. A truly NY experience! more

I loved it... 10/13/2004

I thought this place was great. The tapas were very tasty-- I recommend the dates wrapped with bacon. It's unbelievably good. I also thought the sangria was the best I have had so far in the city. I thought the service was good-the manager was very accomadating. The atmosphere was great. I will be going back. Pros: great good, super sangria, good environment more

Sala Rocks 6/6/2004

I visited Sala with a group of friends for a going away party and we all had a wonderful time. We reserved the downstair lounge for private parties and the price was fairly reasonable. The food was great and plentiful. The service was excellent. I highly recommend this place to anyone seeking to throw a fun lively private party for a reasonable price.... Pros: Inexpensive, Food, Service more

Limited menu 5/2/2004

I expected there to be more options for tapas & the food was mediocre but the service was pretty good. Went with about 8 friends and we were seated in the corner so we wouldn't be disturbed. more

OK Food, OK experience 2/14/2004

Food was good. If you order cheese, they give you a lb. If you order sausage, they give you a pig. The drift is, they give you huge homogenous portions that make you a little annoyed with your order. A little on the noisy side, but enough to have table conversations. Okay if I'm in the neighborhood and want tapas. Sangria was GREAT! Value was 'eh'. Service was good! Pros: Food , Attentive Service Cons: , Value more

Horrible Service 9/6/2003

I have never had more expensive food with such horrible service. The waiter was very rude when cleaning the table and dropped utensils all over me, staining my clothing! I will never go back because the food is not all that, and the service was horrendous! Not worth my money! Even Peter Luger has better service than this place! Cons: Bad Service, Expensive, Too Dark To See Food more

"Feel like going out but not sure you want a full meal? Consider this suavely rustic tapas bar on the Bowery and take your pick of pinchos (small bites), such as shrimp-and-crab-meat-stuffed pimento or octupus vinaigrette; raciones (medium-size tapas), such as mussels in white wine or tortilla espanola; or entrees, such as halibut sauteed with pancetta and leeks, seared tuna with caper sauce, or adobo-spiced pork chops. The new downstairs lounge adds a touch of modern Spain to the old-world decor of the rest of the restaurant: it feels like current-day Barcelona, especially when the DJ spins until 4am". -TimeOut

"Sala...hot, sexy and very Spanish Bowery Iberian yearling with moody, grotto-like digs and a crowd of beautiful hipsters sharing terrific tapas & quaffing sangria, all for a modest price." -ZAGAT

Editorial
  • The Scene
Go after work and you'll wonder if it's open, but go after dark and you'll wonder if it ever closes. Sala (Spanish for "living room") is designed to look like an Old-World alleyway, with iron lanterns, a rustic brick archway and an open kitchen with tiled roof. Pretty patrons complete the alfresco fantasy, exotic and alluring enough to make it feel more like a movie set than a tapas bar.

    The Food
The Spanish cuisine is far better than it needs to be in a place where most believe it's sexier to snack or sip, than to tear into a Segovian-style leg of lamb. The pinchos platter gives a taste of all six delightful apps, including flaky battered cod and balsamic-dressed sliced duck. Some look to seafood paella or peppercorn-glazed rib eye for the main course; others cut to the chase and look to the downstairs lounge.
