Brunch was a SOB 3/21/2011

Wanted a brunch spot for my bday with a cool vibe, good music and tasty enough food. Unfortunately SOBs was not good. Of all the things we ate I would say half of them were boardering on gross. My girlfriends Salmon came out raw, my food was cold, and things on the menu they force you to buy (Pre Fixe) did not come out as described. The chicken I ordered promised collard greens, when I asked why my dish was served with another vegatable they then told me they ran out. I am pregnant, so I couldnt take advantage of the all you can drink Sangria, instead i ordered juice which they charged me for. Rediculous. Also the live music was good but in between VERY short sets they played the most snoozy dental office jazz that was lamer than lame. Its a Bazza Nova brunch. Play some salsa, latin jazz or anything that doesnt put you to sleep! Service was TERRIBLE. They were understaffed (and our server was NEW) and the manager stood at the front twiddling her thumbs the entire time not stepping in to help. With so many amazing choices for brunch in the city i was so regretting my decision to try SOBs. I wasnt expecting the best meal of my life since its a music venue, but I was expecting cool energetic vibe, edible food and decent service none of which we received. more

World Music & Food at its Best. 8/30/2010

Over the last few years since I have lived in the area I have gone to SOB's maybe 5 or 6 times. Each time was for either a Hip-Hop or Reggae show but they do cater to all sorts of world music. Only on two of my visits was I adventurous enough to grab some food and both times I was surprised at how amazing the food was for a music venue. Me and my girlfriend got the island sliders and they were fricken amazing. And on the other occasion we got one of the best fish tacos I've had since moving to the city from Westchester. I would definitely go back for dinner one night. The service was good as well! If your into new music,a great atmosphere, and discovering up-and-coming hip-hop acts before they blow up, Sob's is worth the visit. more

Bhangra Night!!! 8/9/2010

We chose S.O.Bs for our singer's 40th birthday party. (by the way,,she barely looks 30: > )We had performed at a hindu wedding awhile back, fell in love with the music and decided to search for a place that provided just that..Well, SOBs was perfect!!! Not only did they play great music but they gave lessons too!! We had a great time. The food was good, the service was EXCELLENT! We were treated like stars!! thanks to our wonderful waitress Edine, Cyrus and manager Peter, and most of all Sophie who helped put together the whole thing including a delicious red velvet birthday cake with sparklers,,the night was a success. We had our own little VIP section. It was really great! I only wish the prices were a Teensy bit lower, but thats expected in the city. I highly recommend SOBs for dancing , dining and lots of laughter!!! If you'd like to see the pictures of our night, just look up Paris ny entertainment facebook fan page,,,im not plugging the band,,,im just letting you see the pics!!! more

Bossa Nova Brunch 7/12/2010

Sunday is my time to really relax before the week ahead and going to the Sunday Bossa Nova Brunch was the best way for me to do that. The brunch was more than just going to spend money on food; it was a way to kick it with my friends and feel the tropical island vibe. As soon as I drank my first sangria and ate my starter, the assorted empanadas w/ red pepper dip, I knew I was coming to S.O.Bs every Sunday. The Feijoada, Brazil’s National Stew of Pork, Beef & Black beans dish, the chocolate and banana empanadas, unlimited sangrias and live Brazilian music made me feel like I was right in Sao Paulo. Seriously, it’s not a Sunday if you’re not at the Bossa Nova Brunch! Pros: Food & Live music more

Great Live Music 6/26/2010

This is my favorite spot in all of Manhattan. I especially like the monthly Solvillage Showcase hosted by Eric Roberson. He's a unique performer and always adds a bit of humor to the show. The food is delightful and they pour generous drinks. The only drawback is the venue is rather small and if you don't reserve a table you will have to stand the entire show. Pros: Live Music Cons: Small Venue, Site Lines more

they screwed up my reservation 6/24/2010

I pre-booked a party for my sister's bachelorette night a month in advance for 16 people. They seemed very cool and told me I'd get the VIP area. While our party did sit there, another party was already there when we arrived!! This caused us to squeeze into a couple of tiny tables. They didn't offer any $$ back or anything. We told the hostess and manager we were sorely disappointed and no concessions. I want to recommend this place because the music is fun and all, but I would expect better service for having made the arrangements so far in advance. If you decide to do a big party here, make all the details very clear. Pros: dancing, food Cons: they gave someone our space more

Great Live Shows 7/6/2009

From the outside, S.O.B.'s doesn't look like much, but once you enter through the doors and the music starts, there is no way a person can't enjoy themselves. From Jamrock Haitian music to Hip-Hop artists, there is music for everyone. Solvillage with Eric Roberson hosting was a great experience because he is upbeat and knows how to keep the crowd entertained between acts. The acts themselves, while very different, worked well together without seeming forced. Going to any performance is a great way to spend the evening, especially considering there is excellent food and drinks as well. Pros: Music, Atmosphere more

Thank You! 5/13/2009

Dear S.O.B.'s, I would just like to take a few moments to thank S.O.Bs for helping me with my party this past Saturday night. My party had a great time. The food and entertainment, as well as the staff was excellent and we do plan to go back in the future. Thank you again for your patience and hard work. Sincerely, Tiffany Y Pros: Great Staff, Entertainment and Food Cons: None more

Thank You! 3/30/2009

Hi Lourdes, I've already mailed a thank-you card, but wanted to follow up with an email as well. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you and your staff for making my birthday party Saturday night soooo special. From the minute I walked in, the SOB staff not only welcomed me and my guests warmly, but remained attentive and accommodating the whole night. Everything was perfect. I had suuuuch a wonderful time, and I'm so glad that I chose sob's for my celebration. I'm definitely recommending you to anyone who needs a great place to have a party. Two days after the party, people are still emailing me to tell me how great it was. It was fantastic and I owe it all to you and everyone at SOB's!! Special thanks to: Lourdes (event manager) Peter (the manager) Jane (our waitress) and all the security staff. Thanks again!!! Mavis Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

There was a MARCHING BAND at our Birthday PARTY!!!!!!!!!!! 3/9/2009

I have to tell you… that was one of the most fun nights that I have ever been a part of in NYC EVER! We had the best time, and I owe it to you... Lourdes. S.O.B's is incredible Everything ran completely smoothly, we had about 40 people there total for our party…but then they started inviting friends as the night went on. We had an amazing dinner, sparklers on our birthday cakes, a full marching band come out and play, beautiful dancers, awesome music, and the best memories made. All in all, we stayed there until you closed, and cannot wait to come back again. I still cannot believe there was a marching band at our birthday party, sparklers on our cake, and those mojitos… oh my god good. Pros: the marching band, the dancers, the drinks, the food, everyt Cons: that we had to go home more

Great place for large parties and dancing 3/7/2009

My friends and I decided to celebrate a birthday at SOBs on Saturday and we were really pleased. The place was pretty crowded but the hostess was friendly and sat us immediately. The service was really great. Our server Monica was really energetic and fun. She made great recommendations and knew a lot about the menu. She also had another large party to take care of and was always pleasant and attentive. The food was pretty good and the drinks were strong. We really enjoyed the music and the energy of the crowd. Definitely the place to be on a Sat night. When our bill came, we didn't notice that gratuity was automatically included and tipped anyway. Monica came back and let us know that the gratuity had already been included. We were so impressed by her honesty, we ended up leaving her extra anyway. The only complaint is we spent a lot on dinner and drinks and a $7 (per person) music charge was added to our bill. Seriously?! Didn't we spend enough on dinner. Overall, service was great, music was amazing and we will definitely be back! Pros: Service, drinks and music Cons: $7 music charge after spending $$$ on food and drinks more

Not the place to go. 2/24/2009

Went here on a Friday around 7. Charged us $15 per person just to enter the place, which isn't even nice. The venue itself resembles more of a dive bar than a restaurant. The ventilation in the place is also pretty bad, and the drink prices were overpriced. The only reason I'm not giving this place a 1 rating is because my friend's dad played in the band the night I went. You can definately find a better salsa joint if you're into that stuff. more

Delicious Brazilian food! 2/23/2009

I came down to S.O.B.'s for my 25th birthday, I know over the hill! Haha! I had such a great time. My friends have never been before so it was a treat! they loved it. It's like a secret oasis in the city for wild dancing to Brazilian and live world music. And the food was delicious. My tongue was dancing too! We ordered appetizers of Empanadas, Ceviche, Coconut Shrimp and a pitcher of Mojitos. Fabulous, all of it. Cannot wait to come back for Salsa night. more

So fun! 9/23/2008

I've been to S.O.B.'s a few times (for Salsa and Bhangra) and on both occasions (obviously very different nights) I had a great time. And I don't know what the last post was about but they're food is killer! Try the snapper in the banana leaf- it is seriously to die for! more

Best birthday party ever! 5/11/2008

I had my 40th birthday party at SOB's last weekend and it was amazing. The food and service was excellent. The featured band "Alo Brazil" was exceptional. It was the first time my guests attended SOB's and they loved it. If you're going to have a group of 10 or more definitely contact the Special Events Manager, Lourdes Perez. She was very helpful and gave me a good price. Overall, it was a very memorable event. I highly recommend it. Pros: music Cons: small space more

Can fly or flop depending on your mood 5/3/2008

We went to S.O.B.'s for a birthday dinner where a large group attempted to enjoy a meal before making our way to the dance floor. The mojitos were welcome and a highlight, as the music drowned out any chance for substantive conversation. The music itself is great -- high energy, engaging, and appealing to everyone from regulars to a fair amount of bridge-and-tunnel to some guy with a cowboy hat. Most entrees seemed decent, but my feijoada (traditional stew) was truly inedible with meat that was little more than bone and fat. S.O.B.'s would probably have rated an 8' had we been there solely to dance. more

Best spot for Live Music 2/18/2008

I've been to SOBs three times now and I must say that this is the best spot in NY for live music. The club has a nice look to it and I like that the artists onstage feel accessible to the crowd. Overall the place is popping and always rocking. They had a night where Kanye, Common, Mos Def and Swizz Beatz all shared the stage...it was INSANE!!! And the food is also tight, they have a good menu with dishes from a lot of different places. Overall a good place to check out if you're into tight music and good food. -Kevin Marley Pros: Tight live music for a good price... more

Cool Brazilian Spot 2/17/2008

SOB's is the name that usually comes up whenever people start talking about experiencing Brazilian dance/culture around the city. Great place to do just that, dance your legs off. Food is okay, but there are much better Brazilian restaurants in the city if you want that. Unfortunatelly the place has been diverging from the pure Brazilian rithms so make sure to call or visit the website before going there. Keywords to watch out for 100% Brazilian fun: Carnaval, forro, samba. more

Still going strong! 1/19/2008

SOBs has been around for a while and it's still going strong. Peter, the general manager, is really friendly and helpful. I had to organize a birthday party for my wife a few months back and he made sure we were well taken care of. I didn't have to worry about a thing. We had a great time dancing and drinking and the staff was awesome! more

  • The Background
The name stands for "Sounds of Brazil," but this nicely sized room, decorated in full bamboo tropical regalia, showcases everything from Trinidadian calypso and Jamaican reggae to Cuban salsa, samba and the latest in Afro-pop. It also pulls in big-name performers, old-school and new, like bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto, R&B smasher Angie Stone, street poet Gil Scott Heron and the hip-hopping Beatnuts.

    The Experience
The kitchen offers decent fare and the drinks are appropriately fruity and exotic, encompassing mojitos and margaritas, as well as tiki-like selections. S.O.B.'s attracts an interesting mix: Prepare to sway and swing among hip locals, international jet-setters, and of course, tourists.
