A definite must! 9/6/2009

Where to begin? First off, as a fairly regular NYC diner, I've sadly come to realize that good food usually comes with lousy, unappreciative service. I wisely checked with citysearch before making my reservation and after reading all the reviews wondered, ""can it really be? good food and good service under one roof?"" My mother and I went to Roth's tonight after a broadway play and were completely pleased. I was stunned that the waiter not only came by the table several several times to see if everything was alright but the manager came by to check as well. And we didn't have to wait 20 minutes between finishing a course and waiting for the dishes to be cleared or waiting for the check. The service was kind, attentive and prompt. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and was very clean, even the bathrooms (which can be a nightmare in even the nicest establishments). I found the prices to be reasonable for a steak place and was happy with the meal. (The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that I ordered my steak well done and it was more medium.) Nonetheless, it was a wonderful and leisurely evening and the jazz music was great. Comfortable volume level where one could still conduct a conversation without straining to hear. And the musicians were so appreciative of our applause, it was actually cute. I will definitely return! Pros: service, service, service! jazz music, good food Cons: none at all more

Wonderful service and great food 9/6/2009

The place was great and when we walked in we were made to feel so very welcomed. Nick, our server, was so very sweet, funny and attentive. The food was great. The steak was perfectly cooked and my Mom had lobster that was so very succulent and well done. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It can be a bit pricey, but I always believe that you get what you pay for! Gotta love Roth's and we didn't have to travel all the way downtown! Pros: Servers were wonderfully attentive and sweet Cons: The mashed potatoes could have been warmer more

A great find in NYC 2/17/2009

Nice atmosphere, the wait staff was phenomenal and the food was well worth every penny (and very reasonable). I was there on a second date and even she mentioned how enjoyable the evening was in every aspect. We went on a Wednesday and bottles of wine are 1/2 price! Plus, they had a live piano player which complemented the evening ever so much. I will definitely go back! Pros: Atmosphere, wait staff and food Cons: Nothing really, but the live music could have been a little softer (however, it did not distract form the evening). more

VERY SOLID 2/16/2009

You can not beat the food service and price. Very friendly and informal setting. more

Great Restaurant! Excellent Food! Go Visit! 12/21/2008

I was invited to this restaurant along with two girlfriends for lunch. The ambiance was quite warm and charming. Really nice for couples, small gatherings The staff was friendly, although I will admit our particular waiter had an ""interesting"" personality, not bad but not someone I would want to spend more than than two hours around. I have also been there in the evening and my waiter Pervis was extraordinary. On this particular visit, I was greeted by the owner and he is such a nice guy. The appetizers were so tasty - try the calamari! The salads were awesome! We all decided to try something simple for the entree - burgers. So juicy and great portions. The fries were a little too well done and thin for me as I like thicker fries but they passed my test. You have to try their Chocolate cake! Never tasted anything so delicious. You might have to share, it is so rich. The bathroom was so clean and spacious. Roths is a great restaurant! I recommend you visit soon. Pros: Great Food Cons: Need more table space more

I like it.... 7/25/2008

Roths is kind of a gothic anamoly in the neighborhood. The dark exterior and high prices make it tough for everyday dinning, but on special occasions this place fits the bill. The jazz is really good although if you go at the wrong time the Jazz is too loud and overpowers the experience. The steaks are pretty good, they try to be like the downtown steak houses with the meat display. Overall if you want a nice night out with out going downtown this is about as good as it gets this far north.... Pros: Good Jazz Cons: Expensive for the neighborhood more

Very Nice 6/21/2008

It smelled so good from the outside we had to go in. He enjoyed the steak very much, I found it a little bland but I usually do since I'm hispanic and American steak seems to taste like that to me always. So I don't blame the restaurant. I enjoyed the lobster and the little necks. They have a full bar which I love and they have a nice selection of wines for those that love their steak with wine. I love the service and the decorations. I could go without the piano, it makes everyone speak a little louder. It's very quaint. I defenitly have it on my list of places I enjoy. Well priced. Pros: well worth it more

Very Good Restaurant 5/7/2008

Roth's is a very good, friendly neighborhood steakhouse that hits all the right notes. From the wine to the apps to the entrees, Roth's delivers. It's also nice not to have to go to the touristy midtown steak joints as this is situated on the Upper West Side. Pros: Food, Service, Location more

Solidly mediocre 4/18/2008

That this place is still in business -- and thriving, by the looks of it -- reflects the low standards that most upper west siders accept as the norm: attentive service comes with high prices and solidly mediocre food -- underseasoned, sloppily presented, and above all boring. Even the steak -- and this is a steakhouse -- underperforms when compared to non-steakhouse restaurants elsewhere in the city. Unfortunately this sort of place -- aging, unchanging, and utterly uninteresting -- is par for the course for this neighborhood. Do your self a favor -- spend $15 bucks on a cab and go somewhere downtown. Pros: Attentive service, well-staffed Cons: Bland, boring, expensive food; geriatric clientele more

Friendly waitstaff, pleasing music 4/16/2008

I came here with my parents when they were in town. Never tried the place before but always wanted to so we decided to try it out. The wait staff were friendly and a bit quirky, made us feel like we were going there for years. Food was okay for the most part. Their chicken soup was suprisngly very tasty and HUGE however their filet mignon was a bit too dry for my liking, not exactly the best I've had. Music was very nice and not too overwhelming. Overall very nice atmosphere. Pros: Music, Customer Service Cons: Food was average more

Great steaks, not the best music, service was just ok 12/22/2007

I recently went to Roth's steak house to get my steak on. I had a pretty good time although I was seated with my guest at a very small table that barely had enough room for both our plates and the bread basket to fit on. I ordered the Sirloin which was thick and cooked medium rare as I ordered it. My girlfriend had the T-bone which was even thicker and also cooked to order. Both steaks were great, the service on the other hand was just so so. We weren't even read the specials or asked if we wanted them, for an appetizer I ordered the shrimp and lobster soup (new england style) which was tasty except there was hardly any lobster or shrimp in it save a few pieces. The soup was a bit salty for my taste but good. It turned out we had a new waitress so i'll give her some slack but when our steaks came they didn't give us any steak knives so we had to ask for them after. I ordered a cappucino after dinner, I wanted an anisette, which the waitress had no idea about, turns out they don't have anisette there. Ok fair enough, when the cappucino came she gave me no sugar so that was two strikes, altogether three strikes for not telling us the specials no steak knives, and also they wouldn't let us sit at this other two seat table because apparently it was reserved for someone that spends more money in the place than we did which was a real turn off. The place got crowded later and the live music turned out to be some old man playing nothing but ragtime music which led me to exclaim, can we change decades sometime soon. I overheard other tables also expressing this and wishing the guy would switch to jazz. If you want to be heard try sitting as far away from the piano as possible because its very loud. I would reccomend the steaks they were excellent and priced fairly, the ambience wasn't much to talk about and the service wasn't great although other waiters we saw and heard with more experience seemed better. Overall good food but I doubt i'll go back. Pros: Great Steaks not too overpriced Cons: Loud and not much ambience, music wasn't great. more

please, go there... NOW!!! 9/27/2007

I have heard rave reviews about this place, but hadn't gotten around to getting up there- until last night!!! I must tell you, from a girl that was raised on steak... this was the BEST STEAK EVER!!! By far better then any Luger steak. I loved the atmosphere, which was cozy and unpretentious. And to speak on the service... I have always found the majority of the restaurant service in the city horrible: not at Roth's!!! The service, food and atmosphere is well worth the money... on any buget! Pros: live music every night, the food, service, etc...etc.... Cons: that I can't eat there every night!!! more

A real nice joint on the Upper West Side. 8/11/2007

After some musical chairs (don't sit at the two tables next to the piano at around 9pm - you'll have to move when they remove those tables to make room for other musicians!) my girlfriend and I had a wonderful meal. The ample portion of steamed clams were plump, fresh, flavorful and perfectly cooked - some of the best I've ever had. The ceasar salad was cold, crisp and tasty. The two delmonico steaks were superb, again cooked as we requested and full of flavor. When we first sat down a number of servers came to the table and it was a bit confusing who exactly was our waiter. Eventually a different waiter appeared and he was charming, attentive and professional. (Suggestion to the owner: dump the beat up upright piano that sounds terrible, invest in a Yamaha C1 baby grand and just have piano, piano/bass music.) more

A+ Restaurant - great steak, relaxing ambience, flawless service 7/30/2007

My husband and I went to Roth's for dinner on Saturday and enjoyed it immensely. We ordered the steamed clams as an appetizer. They clams were a good size, not too small, and were cooked perfectly. I find that seafood tends to be overcooked by most restaurants but the clams at Roth's were still tender and sweet. We had 2 glasses of the only pinot noir on the wine menu, which offered a good variety. My husband ordered the filet mignon, cooked medium. I like my meat red so I went with the Delmonico (ribeye) cooked rare and it was delicious. We didn't have any room for dessert, although I wish we had! The service was flawless, the waiter checked on us frequently and the busboy came by to empty out our dish of shells and refill our water. The live music and candlelit tables really set a romantic mood. Also, I ordered on Restaurants dot com website $25 certificate for $3.75, there's a 70% promotional code you can use that expires tomorrow. even without the certificate, the prices at Roth's are very reasonable for a steakhouse. We will be back again! Pros: food, service, ambience, Wednesday's bottles of wine at 50% off more

Great Dinner. 2/17/2007

My husband and I wanted to go somewhere we had never been before so we picked Roth's West Side. I read all the reviews and to be qute honest; had my doubts. Well, was I mistaken!!! First of all the service was impecable. Krystan was our server and she was just delightful. The food was exellent as well. We both had filet mignons and they were cooked exactly the way we asked them to be. I was surprised by the offering of seafood they had . Quite an extensive selection. The Roth Mojito's were out of this world and complimented the food well. We're already planning our next trip and trying to decide what we'll try then!! We really enjoyed ourselves and the meal. Pros: Service and Food. more

Great Delmonico Steak 1/5/2007

Great steakhouse right in my neighborhood. My boyfriend had the sirloin and I had the delmonico - - both steaks were juicy and tender. I love the fried onions and the wonderful service. Highly recommend. Pros: Great Steak Cons: a little pricey more

Wow - the meal was amazing 1/1/2007

My boyfriend and I went to Roth's for a New Year's eve dinner. The night did not start out well as the place was pretty empty and they still sat us directly in front of the door/host stand. When we asked to be moved, the hostess said there was nothing she could do and we were just about the leave, when the incredible manager did everything he could to work out that we were comfortable and got us a great table right by the unbelievably talented pianist. Our waiter (I wish I could remember his name) was outstanding and while never bothering us was always right there if we ever needed him for anything. Now the food - unbelievable! My boyfriend is a New York steakhouse snob and he said that the Roth's filet was just as good if not better than any Morton's, Lugers, or Keen's steak he has ever had (and he's had a lot!). When you go, you MUST try the crab cakes, as I am from New England and these rival any I have ever tried. Overall it was a wonderful and romantic night and a great way to end 2006 - you will not be disappointed, once you finally get in the door. more

what do you have? 12/2/2006

I recently had friends in from out of town and brought them to one of my favorite spots on the Upper West Side, only to have our very friendly server return to our table twice to inform us that the dish we had ordered was unavailable. This was at 8:00 on a Friday night! I felt embarassed in front of my guests for having raved about the place. more
