This is a decent place overall with knowledgeable staff, but sometimes they have some problems... If you're buying an aquarium here, they don't let you make the decisions, such as what kind of filter you'd like, or what kind of light you'd like, they do it all for you. I was a total beginner so I didn't know what to ask for, but now my tank is not very bright and I can't grow plants that I want because they didn't let me choose my light. The staff at this pet food/supply store are so very smart! They stopped what they were doing to answer all of my questions and recommend products for my dog who is allergic to grass, of all things! Their helpfulness is way beyond anything I've ever received at any other pet store including PetSmart and Petco. These people know their stuff and will guide you through the decision making process. They're very patient and kind. I will be a loyal customer from now on. \r Pros: Lower prices than the BIG PetStores Cons: It's a small store but it's packed with everything you need! more

When moving into the neighborhood, I always search for the local pet store (always avoid the chains!). Based on their name, I always thought Rivers and Reefs was for fish lovers only - not true at all. They have a wide selection of cat and dog foods, treats, toys and other accessories. I have been happily going for 3-4 years now. The staff has been nothing but absolutely friendly and helpful. \r I am sorry that the person who left the bad review had such an unpleasant experience, but I assure you it does NOT reflect the atmosphere of this place. (Maybe they were just having a bad day, or were difficult themselves?) \r They also have a great program - for every ten bags of dog food I buy, I get the 11th free! However, I don't think that it applies across the board - and may be through the brand I use (Nutro). Something to look in to though. Pros: Friendly, helpful staff, great selection of healthy dog (and other) foods & treats Cons: Never have liked the selling of animals, and they sell birds and fish here. more

I've found this spot to be friendly and very knowledgable about pet products. Although each time I visit it's very busy, the owner is attentive and eager to answer my questions about dog care. Very helpful! One of my favorite Austin spots! Pros: knowledge to share; up to date on pet issues Cons: parking can be a real problem, but worth the wait more

The people in this place really know their stuff- if you have any questions about aquariums, or any pets in general, the folks here can help you out. Kickass selection of fish and decorations, beautiful birds, and everything else in between. more

My experience at Rivers and Reefs was unpleasant to say the least. One of Austin's charms is the welcoming nature of most of the people who live and work here.
