Exquisite but financially nonfeasible 4/26/2011

Restaurant Alma was exquisite when it comes to taste, atmosphere, and presentation. The building is excellently shown and presented. The table was simple clean and elegant with a unique flare creating a really nice atmosphere. The food was delicious and well presented. The only reason Alma's doesn't get a fifth star is due to the portion size and price. Very expensive especially for the 4 bites that comprised the portion. Albeit this was one course in a three course meal but the one course was all I could afford. When I get a better job I would like to go back and try more. more

Sub par service for $250 meal. 1/19/2011

My bf and I went to Alma on a weeknight. We ordered a lovely bottle of wine and 3 course tasting. Server never came back to check on any of our food, not one course, until we were finished. I really didn't care for the chicken foie gras entree. I found it bland, a bit rubbery and unimaginative. All of the other courses were quite good to amazing. My complaint really is that for that $ it would have been nice for the server to check in with us. It also might not hurt to smile once in a while. The phrase that comes to mind is ""Mailed it in""... more

Cozy and Delicious 3/20/2010

Sublime union of cool and comfortable. Ordering from the tasting menu is a ratifying experience for even the most fickle patron. Likewise, is selecting from the impressive wine list. I savored each course, but the crowning glory was the 12 hour beef roast, graced with parsnips, balsamic onions and carrot butter; paired with a French Cab, it was simply divine. The service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. I will return to Restaurant Alma again and again. more

Absolutely Spectacular! 11/16/2009

My husband surprised me with a date nite at Alma. It was our first time there. Everything about it from the ambiance, service, and food was outstanding! We both did the 3 course tasting menu. I asked the server to have the chef/bar manager choose a wine pairing for each dish. They put together a lovely smaller portion wine flight that went with each dish beautifully. The lovely Cava sparkling wine upon arrival is classy and festive. Each dish was more interesting and amazing than the last and left us both eager to plan our next date night at Alma. My husband and I both thought the celery root souffle was out of this world. Can't say that I've had a lot of celery root in my day, but the flavors of this dish just reminded us of the comforts of home. We didn't have time for dessert, so they brought me out a glass of tawny port for dessert instead. How cool, is that? Our server was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations. Thank you! Can't wait to go back! Pros: Fantastic staff and unbeatable amazing food! Cons: Not sure there are any? Parking is slim pickins. more

Consistently excellent 9/9/2009

This place is stupendous! My Boyfriend and I recently went in for the tasting menu. Brian the sous chef recognized us and sent complimentary champagne. In addition to the tasting menu, he sent out several other morsels gratis. In all we paid 80.00 for two glasses of wine and 7 courses! We love alma and if we could give it a 10 star rating we could. They really know what they are doing there. Pros: Everything Cons: nothing they take great care of their guests more

Really Good, and 7/10/2009

My friend and I were really looking to try someplace outside of downtown that we hadn't been to before that was upscale but not stuffy and Alma was just the right choice. The food was good. The service was thorough and it was just a great meal. Pros: Creative, Modern food, Quiet and Lovely decor Cons: No parking, A bit pricey more

A Amazing Experience 3/31/2009

A girlfriend and went to dinner at Alma Recently and had just a great experience. the server had great timing and great suggestions, we each did the tasting menu and had her pick out each course. She did a great job, and the food was wonderful, and we had a beautiful bottle of wine and after you buy a bottle from them they waive the corking fee, which was cool. So we enjoyed another great wine from home. A great night all around! Pros: Great Service, Food and Wine Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Amazing food! 4/28/2008

Service was uneven but the food made up for it - outstanding! We all tried the tasting menu and everything\r was superb. There was a snafu w/ my entree (server forgot to place the order?) so the chef sent a salad\r so I had something to eat while my companions had their entrees. After my wonderful entree arrived (Atlantic char), we were treated to a cheese course, gratis. Classy move. Highly recommend - some of the best food in Minneapolis! more

Poor service and okay food 4/23/2008

My wife and I had the tasting tonight. Nothing wowed us at all. Everything seemd to be a touch on the bland side. They use interesting ingredients, but nothing seemed to be seasoned or flavorful. Our server was the worst part of it. She completely was ignoring us. It took 15 minutes for beverages and she was slow.... No suggestions from her either. She did the classic ""are you ready to order"" as our greeting. more

Avoid Avoid Avoid! 4/7/2008

I tried Alma last Saturaday evening. I was expecting great things but was left with a very bad taste. The waitress or server was perhaps overworked or did want to be at work. Her lack of a intial greeting down to the filling of the water glasses left much to be desired. We had four entrees with a salad. Salad and bread were fine. The entrees ranged from sea food to pork. We should have sent all four entrees back. It is not that they were cold or overdone. It was because the food was excessively salty. All four entrees tasted as if the salt shaker had been dropped on each of the plates. Perhaps this is just a style of preparation or perhaps the staff just made a mistake this night. We made mention of the situation to the waitress and she indicated it would be brought to the kitchen staff attention. On her return to our table she dropped off the check and did not sat a word to our party. I recommend not to visit. There are way too many restaurants that appreciate your business in the twin cities. Pros: Good location Cons: No off street parking, overly salty food, very poor service more

Excellent food! 10/21/2007

Great ingredients, you can really taste it in the dishes....just went in the other night, spectacular. If you are a foodie this is a must, otherwise you may be intimidated. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Have had a dish I didn't care for before more

Variable quality great presentation 6/26/2006

Second visit to this restaurant was disappointing. Spent close to $100 w/o dessert or drinks and had a very mediocre entree. At this price point I expect consistent quality. more

Fantastic and new favorite! 3/22/2006

My boyfriend and I were given a gift certificate to try Alma! What a treat! This was THE BEST meal we have had! We had a Valentine's celebration at Alma and it was perfect! The mood is perfect. The wait starff is attentive, but not in your face. The bruschetta was some of the best I've had. Just can't say enough about the taste, quality, portion size and wine list! Thanks ""Alma"" for a great night and can't wait to dine with you again! J&J Pros: FOOD, PRICE, WINE LIST Cons: parking more

Excellent food and service 1/4/2006

The food and service are fabulous. We had 5 for dinner on a Saturday night, and most had the 3 course tasting menu, which is a good value (basically middle course for free). There was nary a spec of food left on anyone's plate after any of the courses (one of the main dishes-fish-I would have called just average but not objectionable). Be sure to save room for dessert as they are heavenly (molten chocolate cake!). The portion sizes are designed for several courses without making you ill--everyone was content but not stuffed to the gills after the meal. The service was great--we probably had 12 different people touch our table over the course of the evening, taking plates and refilling water glasses. Pros: Awesome food, Great Service Cons: Parking more

One of the BEST restaurants in town! 5/13/2005

I have been going to Alma since it first opened and I have NEVER had a bad experience there. I have only received gracious service, never attitude. The food is heavenly, with lots of local seasonal organic love thrown in. TOP CHEFS IN TOWN! The menu is quite workable. Its great that the menu always has something for everyone and changes constantly. Plus, you dont have to spend a lot of $ to eat well here. Im now an Alma regular, but even when I had only been there a few times they were always incredible with service. Ive been given free appetizers, wines, and deserts to try (guinea pig for the future menus!) on numerous occasions. They know I love them & they love me back. It is rare to find a place like this, like a home away from home. Alas-I wont give up my parking secret though. Pros: perfect food, ambiance, service Cons: as if... more

One of my faves 9/27/2004

Alma has done nothing but gotten better since they opened. Food has always been outstanding, but the service has improved considerably since their much-decried ""snooty service"" days. Always a great experience. (Parking could use a little help, though.) Pros: Outstanding food, Great service more

Somthing classy and delicious 6/30/2004
