will not return to this establishment 1/11/2009

I recently ate at this establishment in a party of nine for a retirement dinner celebration. the service was poor; we were overcharged by $96 on our bill and the management, even tho admitting we were overcharged and it would be resoved, it has not been and it has been almost a week now. I have never seen worse customer service ever and we won't be back! more

Sat club night 11/16/2008

I've been going to the refec for Sat night dancing frequently for the past 5 years. Last night we went and they got 2 new female djs. We waited an hour for some good music. They were playing RAVE 80s TECHNO BS. My friend went to get a drink and asked the bartender what was up with music. He said that they got 2 new djs and they are getting away from hip-hop to 'change the crowd'...REALLY?!?!?! I told my girl to chug her drink so we could leave. Too bad 'cuz I really like Jason, our usual bartender. Got to the front counter and asked for our money back. 3 other girls followed and asked the same. Staff asked the manager and he said that we could have our money back but that we couldn't come back tonight. UH YA WE'RE ASKING FOR OUR MONEY BACK SO WE COULD COME BACK L8R?!?! Needless to say, went to the 2nd choice, Copper Penny, and amazingly, it was packed. HUH IMAGINE THAT. Had a great time GREAT MUSIC! All the hits. Won't be going back to the refec until they bring the hip-hop back. more

Sometimes familiar is good. 8/24/2008

We have been going to the Refectory since the 1970s. The food is good, plentiful, cooked correctly and served promptly. They don't serve ""upscale Northwest cuisine"" or ""Asian fusion."" The restaurant is kinda kitchy and fun. It doesn't have tile floors and granite counter tops- in fact it hasn't changed in 30 years and sometimes that is a good thing. If you want a very good steak or prime rib this is a great restaurant! The shrimp is also very good. The prices are extremely reasonable and it's comforting to go to an old familiar place. Pros: Familiar surroundings and excellent steak and prime rib Cons: You get what you see- not modern and updated more

Chippendales 7/25/08 6/17/2008

I love seeing the Chippendales when they come since it always makes me feel good. My favorite skits are Cowboy and Hero! The guys are so sweet and so easy on the eyes. Ladies you can't miss them when they come to the Refectory! \r more

A steakhouse GEM! 6/2/2008

""The Refectory"" A ""quiet"" steakhouse GEM. We have eaten here twice. Both times our Prime Rib was a perfect ""medium rare."" Both times! (20 hour slow roasted with housemade au jus & horseradish.) Wow-I thought I was in Iowa. Our salad was ""all green lettuce."" Just as I requested. Our potato was too big again! The low prices were embarassing. Finally our server Parker was great! Check it out! more

Gone way downhill over past 10 yrs 5/1/2008

I had my wedding reception there 10 years ago and it was absolutely perfect. The service was great and the atmosphere of both the restaurant and banquet area was elegant. My husband and I recently went back and I so wish we hadn't. I was so disappointed. The crowd has changed to low-class gheto. I felt really uncomfortable there and I love to dance... but not at that place - just really trashy. The bartender was nice, but the front (bouncers, check-in) were rude. We are not trashy or scary looking - my husband is a soccer coach and had on some sports pants (he wears nothing but sporty stuff) and we were nearly kicked out AFTER we had already had a table and had been served. Unbelievable! Yet, punks with pants hanging off their butts, with chains are allowed to wander freely. One dude was so wasted, he was passing out in his chair, but the staff chose to pick on the two most normal people in the whole place. Whatever... I'll never go back. I'm glad my sister won't be having her reception there this summer. Pros: Right next to a mongolian grill Cons: rude staff, ambiance, location. Coaches: don't wear sports pants - they'll try to kick you out after being seated and served more

Excellent service and food 2/23/2008

I've just recently moved to Portland and someone recommended The Refectory. Me and my wife visited Refectory on Friday night for dinner and I must say, we'll definately will be back. The service was great and so was the food. All workers had a polite attitude and looked like they wanted to be there. I had the 20 hour prime rib and my wife had the pacific red snapper. It is one of the best prime ribs I've ever had. I was also suprised the we received 20% off our check, the server told us that it is one of the promotions that they are doing at the moment. Great food, great price and great service, highly recommended. Pros: Service more

Exceptional food value with a nostalgic steakhouse feel 12/16/2007

Been here several times and the restaurant side reminds me of the old steakhouse our folks took us to in the 70's. Relaxing atmosphere complete with Sinatra music, fireplace and comfortable booths. As for the bar, went there once to watch a fight and I would rank it as one of the better sport bars in Portland without the crowd. Not into the dance scene, and I don't care for the ""ugly"" people comment seeing as this isn't a pick up joint - go to the Pearl if you want ""pretty"" people. What Refectory has is good people that believe in service and good food at reasonable prices. This is NOT a pretentious place, and I like it that way. WIsh it had a pool table in the back - I would stop spending my money at Rock Bottom and Henrys. Pros: Food and Prices Cons: dinner could be served a faster more

TRASHY PEOPLE! Bad Dance Club 11/18/2007

This is the worst place I have ever, EVER been to. The people were ALL Gross and stinky! I call this the UGLY club... I am not EVEN trying to be rude! Just Honest! YUK... YUK. YUK!!!!\r There was a couple that was just married and they came in their wedding attire and all.... does this tell you anything? No classy people there, AT ALL! I left as soon as I could! Pros: The bartender was polite Cons: The whole place more

Older but still good prime rib 11/15/2006

The food here is good. The resturant is not in the best place as far as location and the building is old so I never would have picked this place to go to for prime rib by looking at it but it really is good. I would highly reccomend the food. Pros: Prime Rib Cons: Older place more

Texas Hold Em Tourneys Add Fun 10/19/2005

The Refectory has always been a great place for food, friends, drinks and dancing, but now it is even better since it is hosting charity Texas Hold Em Tournaments on Sundays at 4pm for the Police Activities League. Legal games with a $65 buy in are fun to watch and you can even win prepaid VISA cards. Wow! Pros: Parking, poker, service more

Great place! 10/15/2004

I used to live in Portland and whenever I want to go out and get a great steak, this is the place to go. The service is great, the atmosphere is perfect for a nice, relaxing dinner, and I just love this restaurant. It makes a great place to celebrate special occasions too, I have brought my parents here many times. Pros: Great food, Great drinks, Great service more

Put this 1st, East of 205 12/28/2002

It is hard to find a place that will mix it up as well as the Refectory, East of the 205. The only negative complaint I have is it's size. It looks like it will only hold a peak of around 200-220 people. Music, good variety. Scenery, lots of pretty and not so pretty people, again well blended mix (Hey, you can't have everything). Drinks, name brands pricey but strong. Will spend New Years '03 there with Z100 and the crew. Good times will happen. more

Real people, real fun! 11/21/2002

This is actually way out of my compared to going downtown, and I went here with some friends for the first time on a Friday. Get there early if you want to have a table close to the dance floor, and enjoy the food. When it goes on special, its cheap and good. Drinks are good, prices fair, and music was good. They play a good variety so be prepared to dance to everything. Great Place!! Will be a mainstay in my rotation. Pros: Good Drinks, Good Music, Good Prices more
