You must go! 3/25/2004

Raleigh's Original Tavern 7/9/2002

The oldest bar in Raleigh, the PR opened in 1951 and has served many folks since. The PR is where all-comers are welcome and treated like regulars. Nothing has changed since its beginning. Beer steins (from regulars), an extensive collection of beer cans/bottles and decantors adorn the walls. Icy cold beer-the coldest in town. Good bottle/draft selection, but no liquor. Excellent bar food, featuring the Bernie Burger and wonderful appetizers. Also has excellent pasta and other dinner plates. The jukebox selections run the gamut from John Coltrane/Miles Davis, Stones, Beetles, and local artists to Hank Williams, Sr. This place is unpretentious and reminiscent of the NYC/Greenwich Village taverns that other Raleigh locales wish they could be. Think NYC's McSorley's. Tried and true, the PR is a great place to frequent. Pros: Inexpensive, Cozy, Beer selection Cons: Smoky more
