Watch out for the very expensive espresso 2/7/2011

Four stars for the amazing, buttery, flaky, not overly sweet almond croissant that I picked up as a treat for myself one chilly afternoon. I think I almost swooned when I took my first bite. One word of warning: if you want a double espresso to go with that, as I did, go across the street (or on any corner) to Starbucks as Petrossian will charge you by the shot. That's right, my double espresso cost $16. I was in such shock for being such an idiot for not asking the price that I simply paid, dumbfounded, and left. Good lesson for me - suck it up and ASK how much they charge for an espresso. Even $8 for a single shot is too rich for me. I was thinking perhaps that I'd find tiny gold flecks at the bottom of my to-go cup for that price but alas, that was not the case. more

So disappointing 1/11/2011

My husband and I went to celebrate our eight year anniversary. The waitstaff is completely uninterested in the patrons. One guy tried to be conversational in all the wrong ways, and the other didn't let me finish my question before answering. The appetizers were excellent (I can honestly say I had the best foie gras there outside of Paris), but the entrees were so subpar, I couldn't even finish mine. There's a fine line between decor that makes you feel like you've travelled back in time and decor that's old; this place needs an OVERHAUL, especially at the price point it's at. I'd go back for that foie gras, but nothing else. more

menu change is a disaster 1/17/2010

Petrossian has lately revamped its menu to include bacon and eggs with all entrees, they've eliminated their old takeout meny (although it's still posted online eveywhere) and, in general, the charm and French flair of the menu is totally gone. What a shame! Pros: croissants are still the best in town Cons: who wants an iHop menu at Petrossian? more

Overpriced Food 11/13/2008

The food is good there, but the prices are high, and it is so crowded and noisy that having a conversation is almost impossible. For that much money, I want a relaxing meal, elegantly served, in a lovely restaurant. Petrossian doesn't fit the bill. Pros: food Cons: pricey more

One of the best restaurants in the city 10/24/2008

I have been to Petrossian several times over the years and never have been disappointed at all. I went again last night and was pleasantly surprised to get a reservation on 30 minutes in advance and as usual the service was great and the food amazing. I am still surprised by how well priced this place is, many people will say it is expensive but all restaurants aside that are not known for their caviar, it is well priced. And if you want a nice lunch with amazing food but do not want to dress business casual, go to the boutique and cafe for an amazing lunch. Overall I love this place, it is always a good idea to do the prix-fixe as you will get a 3 course dinner for only $49 and only $12 if you would like the american sturgeon caviar appetizer. Pros: Food and Service Cons: Is there any? more

Just fair 7/29/2008

I really loved the atmosphere and was excited upon entering. However the staff was less than friendly and couldn't have cared less about my table. The menu said ""soup"" however I received gazpacho, my meat was rare when I ordered it medium and my dessert was medicore. The general menu descriptions were far from the food that was received and there was nothing special about anything I ate. For that price there are much better places in the city to eat. Pros: atmosphere Cons: food, service more

A bit overrated 12/1/2007

My wife set up a dinner party for 30 or so foreign gov't officials. They were able to seat us all comfortably, and the service was great. I wish the food was as good as the service. Pros: Great location, ambience Cons: Food not up to par more

Excellent restaurant and great service!! 8/30/2007

I love great food and I constantly go to high-end restaurant to dine. This restaurant is by far one of the best restaurants I have been to. The food is cooked and served nicely and creatively! We love our Champagne Creme Brulee, juicy and crusted salmon! The service is iimpeccable and the decor is also glamorous. Pros: Great service and fantastic food Cons: A bit pricy! more

worst customer service I've ever encountered 7/22/2007

The maitre'd and wait staff lost my reservation and accused me of never making the reservation in the first place. After making accusations, they never even attempted to alleviate the situation. They were unbelievably rude and completely incompetent. I definitely do not recommend this restaurant. If I could give negative stars, I would. Cons: horribly rude staff more

Lousy Restaurant Week Food 2/7/2006

The prix fixe meal they served for Restaurant Week (Jan 27) was the worst we ever had. For an additional $12 they served the bottom-of-the-line caviar, which was ordinary at best. My husband's shrimp was burned, and my salmon was overcooked. The desserts were unremarkable as well. The reviews suggest that they may ordinarily have good food - just be sure to stay away during restaurant week! Cons: lousy, burned food more

unforgettable experience 7/12/2005

I am european, due to business and pleasure I travel around the world and eat at the best restaurants. Petrossian is always on my list. Superb food and service, unique ambience, not snobby. I highly recommend it and will return when in NY! Pros: food, service, ambience more

Petrossian: The Paradigm of Luxe 7/22/2004

If you have the means to splurge for a peerless celebration of luxury, Petrossian is the place. My worry that it might be something of a clip joint was entirely displaced by my experience there last night, one of unmatched indulgence and delight. To wit, we ate large quantities of ideal caviar presented with grace and refinement, not silly ceremony. If our toast points ever cooled, waitstaff replaced them unbidden. We also sampled some of the world's best wines in this comfortable, beautiful, and surprisingly inviting jewel box of a restaurant. Even more, the kitchen follows up with entrees and desserts which are uniformly marvelous specimens of classic French haute cuisine. As long as I live, I will remember the evening joyfully. Pros: The Finest Caviars, The Finest Wines, Service, Atmosphere more

Nice and quiet 11/17/2003

Went there on Saturday night on Nov 8. Some people in our party got stuck in traffic and made it 30 minutes later but kept table for us all that time while we were waiting for them and having drinks at the bar. Place was pretty much packed, but it wasn't very noisy. We enojoyed our dinner, food was superb and service is very attentive. Drinks at the bar, 3 appetizers, 4 entrees and two bottles of Saint Emillion Grand Cru Bordeaux totalled $440 including tax and tips. Overall very good, a bit expensive. more

Great place! 2/4/2003

Great caviar and champagne. Very elegant, suprisingly not stuffy. Very cool place for a date. more

Serenely elegant 1/29/2003

Friends and I visited Petrossian for dinner on a recent trip to NYC. We found the food to be inspired, the wait staff attentive but unobtrusive, and the surroundings quietly elegent. I'll go back the next time I'm in New York. The caviar can't be beat! Pros: Serene, Elegant, Delicious more

The Caviar Experts 11/18/2002

We stopped in the other night to have some drinks and ended up having tons of caviar, salmon, fois gras, and fun. Truly, the caviars and assorted fish roe are the best ever. It's very quiet and strangely welcoming. Pros: great food, great bartender, peace and quiet more

A+++ 9/10/2002

Great place a bit pricy, but well worth it. Order Apps first and dont even bother with Main Course. You have to try double Choc cake more
