Not worth the money 7/4/2011

I went to Perilla with my girlfriend. We made a reservation because we wanted to go try something special. I'll give you the quick sum up first, then you can read the rest if you feel like it........ Big disappointment. If you have 100 bucks to spend on a date, i highly recommend you go to Budakan, or David Burke Townhouse. Both those places are pricey but at least you come away feeling like you paid for something special. Now on to the experience...... The duck meat ball appetizer was nice. I ordered the duck breast and she ordered the salmon. Both our dishes came to us practically raw. The fish was luke-warm to the touch. My duck was red in the middle, even though i asked for ""medium"". Neither of us were even moderately impressed with our dishes and we both left the plates 60% uneaten. It was actually unappetizing. Aside from the main part of the dish, there wasn't really anything that came with it. The duck just had some spinach and some peanuts. Not flavorful. Not really impressive. I could have easily made this myself. The fish came with just some sauce that wasn't amazing by any standards. We ordered the risotto as a side. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. Kind of inconsistent texture. Once again, not impressive. So , one appetizer, 2 entrees, a one alcoholic drink..... $100. Um...... Yeah, no way that was worth it. We both left that place hungry and i personally wanted to stop at a deli for a sandwich afterwards. I think the other people giving this place high reviews are just part of the pretentious foody crowd or they just don't want to feel stupid for saying ""i don't get it, this food isn't that good""....... well i'm not worried about being that guy. I don't get it, and the food wasn't good and i would never think to myself, ""wow, i'm really craving _____ from Perilla"" more

Perilla on Behind the Burner 6/2/2010

I absolutely love the sorbet cake at Perilla, and it's affordable too. I read about them on Behind the Burner. com they have a great segment on Perilla, just search the name in the searchbar on the site more

Great recommendation, great food! 11/19/2009

My old boss was in town and wanted to catch up for dinner, after flying in the day previous, somewhere more relaxed was preferred. A colleague recommend Perilla. I read some of the reviews on this site and was a little worried about the noise comments - my colleague disagreed so I thought what the hell and booked a table for 2! Pros: Calamari Salad, Steak for 2 to share! more

What's this? I forgot what we ordered. Who cares-It's amazin 10/29/2009

The food is fantastic!!! My only regret about this place is that it will become too popular and harder to get a table, or that the chef will take off soon. But they already have a very good pace for seating/reservation staggering, so as long as the chef sticks around, this will be my new favorite place in the W Village for a while. Love the decor. My cocktail was also wonderful. Again, not into sweets, and the Perilla 75 has JUST the right mix of sweet, sour and zing. Wasn't crazy about the dessert we shared (peanut butter something or other), but I'm not a big dessert person. It could be bigger, but then it might lose some of its uniqueness. Pros: food, service, design Cons: a bit small, a bit noisy more

Fantastic New American 6/28/2009

I don't usually take time to review but Perilla was so good that I will. 9:45 res for two. Seated right away. Space bet tables was tight, but not more so than many Manhattan places. Noise loud, but place was packed, and noise probably a function of place size (small, but not tiny as described in some reviews). Shared app: roasted maine sardines w/ black hummus, piquillo peppers & oregano vinaigrette. Entrees: dorado (special) w/ chickpeas & water chestnuts; roasted local game hen w/ orzo, summer vegetables, pea greens & poultry jus. Desserts: rhubarb sorbet cake w/ creme fraiche parfait & peanut butter chantilly; vanilla scented doughnuts w/ key lime custard & coconut refresher. Donuts highly recommended. Service impeccable, food delicious. Pros: All food and service Cons: Noise level more

Really nice dining experience 6/18/2009

Wife and I went to Perilla for our anniversary. Warmly lit dining room that wasn't too bright provided a really romantic atmosphere. The food was really something special. Duck meatballs, crispy pork belly, branzino and lamb, and vanilla scented doughnuts were all wonderful. A very indulgent meal that left us feeling very satisfied. Friendly and knowledgeable staff made it all the more enjoyable. Great place for a special occasion. Well worth the price. Can't wait to go back and try brunch. Pros: food, atmosphere, staff Cons: none really more

Fantastic Food & Great Service 9/18/2008

The perfect combination of great food and good service in a nice intimate restaurant atmosphere. Came here with a large group of New Yorkers, and visiting Australians & New Zealanders and every single person was satisfied. Impressive! Go Harold! Pros: Delicious Food & Great Service more

Exquisite food 9/7/2008

We had Summer Truffle & Sheep's Milk Ricotta Ravioli, Scallops, Pork Belly and doughnuts. Everything was delicious. The ravioli was extremely yummy and light, scallops were beautifully seasoned with a perfect crispiness on the outside, the same delicious crispiness in the pork belly dish. We have eaten in the most fabulous restaurants and this one is up there with the best. The service is excellent our waiter was attentive but not intrusive. Highly recommend this restaurant; we plan on coming back for more. Pros: Fabolous Food Cons: Small Portions more

Great brunch 8/25/2008

I've been here twice for brunch and the place has been great both times. The omelets are a perfect texture. Make sure to order sides--the main course comes unaccompanied. The fruit is especially fresh and diverse and the toast is fancier than you'll find for most brunches. Nice, attentive service too. more

High-quality food and service without the high drama 7/28/2008

My friend and I went to Perilla on a Friday night--early--as reservations can be hard to get. We were greated warmly and seated immediately upon arrival. We ordered glasses of rose wine to start, after our server offered us a sample. The wine was perfect for a warm summer evening. The menu isn't extensive, but since this is a relatively new restaurant, perhaps it shouldn't be. I had the pork belly appetizer, which was outstanding--crispy on the outside and juicy and tasty on the inside--and the special pappardelle carbonara, which our server offered to bring as either an appetizer or entree. My friend had the duck, which was perfectly cooked. We moved on to dessert--individual carrot cake and ginger ice cream for me and a trio of sorbet for my friend. The desserts weren't extremely inventive but they were tasty. Both dishes were light enough to send us out into the evening without the food coma that can come with super-sweet desserts. Both of us were very happy with what we ordered. Pros: food, service, wine, location more

awesome meal 6/23/2008

this place was great! went here for an anniversary with my boyfriend because i am a huge top chef fan. we had the duck meatballs (great) the bison loin tataki (great) for apps. next we had the duckling, ravioli, and faro risotto all three were great (esp. the risotto). for dessert we had the doughnuts (they were good, somewhat forgettable, but good). the wine and service was excellent. i would highly recommend this place to anyone. the noise may be an issue but it's expected for such a popular place. please go here! Pros: wine, food, service Cons: maybe the noise more

delicious food, excellent service 5/28/2008

cheek appetizer - delicious; duck meatballs - great; duck, ravioli - also great; pancetta wrapped pork tenderloin - good; doughnut, red velvet cake - average; chocolate sampling - quite good. service - impeccable more

Fun space, terrific Food, drinks, and atmosphere 5/24/2008

I typically don't write reviews of restaurants, but I had to do put a few words about this place. It was surprising to be welcomed on a Saturday night - late in the evening, with no reservation. Me and my fiancee sat down and we had the duck meatballs and the octopus. Both were literally amazing - nicely seasoned, nothing to be changed at all. Our server wasn't pushy or interrupting at all - just timely in his words to us and his service. Pros: Duck Meatballs, Hanger Steak, Pork Loin, Chocolate Tasting Cons: not one more
