My favourite place to eat in Charleston! 2/7/2009

Relaxed atmosphere. The food is fantastic and prices are inline with other fine Charleston dining. My wife and I have made it our traditional anniversary night out! more

Worth every penny! 6/5/2008

We made reservations for four and when we arrived we were seated right away near the bar. Our server was phenomenal and knew what she was talking about. We didn't know what everything on the menu was so we asked and she didn't act snooty or rude about it. She made recommendations and was spot on every time. The wine list is exceptional and we were very pleased with our selection. I had a peach fizz from the bar. It was one of the best cocktails I've ever been served. Not too sweet, stout or weak. Just perfect. The tuna appetizer was a little small, but the taste was way too good not to try. It was prepared two ways and each was perfect. Pros: Great everything Cons: Nothing more

Wonderful Restaurant with great service 6/3/2008

My wife and I live in Houston and traveled to the Charleston recently for a short vacation. We are accustomed to top quality restaurants and the Peninsula definately rates at the top of the food chain. I had scallops which were cooked perfectly and my wife had the fish special of the day and it was also excellent. We stayed in the adjoining hottel (Planters Inn) and also stopped in one night just for desert. The banana pudding was not what my mom used to make (it was much better) and the giant coconut cake was killer. Pros: Everything that you expect from a great restaurant more

Excellent food, just go. 3/13/2007

My wife and I had dinner at the Peninsula on Saturday 3/10/07 and thought it was excellent. The staff was pleasant, knowledgable and attentive. For a total $150 bill (including tax & tip) we had two cocktails, two appetizers, two entrees (I had the Tile fish special) and a piece of coconut cake to go. It was all excellent and while I don't particularly like cake, it was just fine. The bar is noisy but it was filled with kids (twenty-somethings) who should probably have been at a beer joint. We have no connection with this company (they own the Planter's Inn, and other hotels and other restaurants). We intend to go back, soon, hoping that those who don't care for it won't be there. If you appreciate a team that tries hard and delivers a fairly high standard of service and cuisine, just go. You won't regret it. If you go to restaurants expecting to be disappointed, perhaps you should stay home. Pros: Creative menu; well prepared; good value; NOT a chain franchise restaurant. Cons: Keep the kiddies out of the bar. more

Very uncomfortable service 12/4/2006

We came in for desserts and after dinner drinks after dining at another restaurant in Charleston. Being highly recommended, we expected exemplory service and the wonderful food and desserts that we had heard so much about. Working in the industry, we know what to look for and expect only the best. We arrived at the bar and ordered some dessert and high priced champagne. Upon dining at the bar, we DID NOT expect to hear about the bartenders previous night of drinking and partying. We could tell before we heard her story that she had been on an all night bender...dropping glasses, snipping like she had done illegal substances the night before, with unkept hair and a sloppy apparance. Needless to say, we couldn't relax as she whirled around the tiny bar and made our dining experience uncomforable. A 4-star restaurant should be an atmosphere of relaxation as you should be able to enjoy your $50 dollar desserts without feeling rushed or uneasy. Unfortunately the bartender ruined the whole image of the restaurant for us. After all, that is the first impression you get when you first walk through the door... Pros: Coconut cake Cons: female bartender more

The best 8/2/2006

Good srevice Great Chef. Great hostess Great food A little noisy Locals go for special occassions. Iam not an emplyee or owner. more

Very rude service, food was average and the price didn't match the package! 7/15/2006

This restaurant comes with rave reviews and quite frankly I just don't get it. The service was very rude starting with the Bartender, and my experience continued to go downhill from there. By the time my food arrived (including a long piece of thread in my soup) I wished I would have chosen one of the many other dining options in the historic district. Cons: Service!! more

Best of the Best! 7/5/2006

The Peninsula Grill defines fine dining in Charleston. If you belive these reviews, I would encourage you to join the rest of your friends at the TGI Fridays! Yes, the food is expensive and the atmosphere is lively, but the service is perfect, the menu is creative and food is the best you will find in SC. The chef is very creative and takes you on a culinary journey with his take on southern french fusion. I have dined at the finest restaurants in NY, LA and all accross Europe and I would put Peninsula on par with any of them. Pros: Everything! Cons: Hard to get a table more

Average food for a way above average price 4/3/2006

For their price point this restaurant fails to deliver in many ways. First off, for $200 for 2 people to have a nice dinner (yes, it's about that much for 2 cocktails, a shared appetizer, two entrees, bottle of ""cheap"" wine and dessert) you expect a top notch experience and cuisine. We arrived right on time for our 8:30 reservation, but weren't seated until 9:00. We split a tuna appetizer that was decent, but nothing extraordinary, and the Ribeye and the Duck Breast entrees. Both entrees were, once again, decent, but nothing great. For $30 entrees, you expect more than simply, decent. The coconut cake was very good, but we were pretty disenchanted with the whole experience by that point. With so many great restaurants within half a mile of the Peninsula Grill, don't waste your time with this one. Try McCrady's, High Cotton, SNOB, Blossom, Cypress, or FIG instead. Pros: wine list, dessert Cons: poor service, loud, expensive more

There are finer restaurants in Charleston 2/14/2006

I will have to agree with some of the previous reviews, my dining experience with the peninsula grill was mediocre at best. We were seated promptly, however I was immedietly surprised with the noisy atmosphere of this so-called four star restaurant. The dining room is undersized and overcrowded, not at all what I would consider a romantic atmosphere. I was dissapointed with the discourteous demeanor of some of the staff members. The food is excellent and the wine selection is astonishinly diverse - however I would not reccomend Peninsula Grill, there are many better restaurants within just a few footsteps. Pros: first-rate food, diverse wine selectio Cons: Noise, rude staff more

There are better places to eat in Charleston 10/2/2005

The Peninsula Grill comes highly recommended from a lot of sources. We found the restaurant to be particularly unattractive in decor, the staff was very stiff and not as friendly as one would think. In fact we thought the staff was down right rude. If you are debating between this and another restaurant, pass on the Peninsula Grill. more

A disappointment at a great restaurant 9/11/2005

Formerly our favorite fine restaurant in Charleston. The food is excellent; though not the only excellent food in the city. Service is impeccable and the ambiance, though noisy, is truly an experience. What is disappointing here? The overall noise is one thing, but excessively loud individuals who have more than a little too much libation reminds me more of a second rate bar than a fine restaurant. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Noisy, Crowded seating, Rowdy patrons more

top notch food 9/8/2005

knowing nothing other than the citysearch (amongst others..) reviews, i opted to take my wife here for our 10th annversary dinner. and thankfully so. the food is exquisite - elegantly prepared, delicious sauces and compliments. our server was very knowledgable and attentive. the chef came to check on us. we talked at length with the sommelier. it was pampering at it's best. be prepared to pay for it - the prices are not disproportionate to the food by any means, but this isnt your $9.99 meal. my largest complaint was the decor - while sedate and unobtrusiove, it didnt add anything to the experience. not what one would expect for a fine dining establishment. Pros: food quality, service, location Cons: busy, banal decor more

excellent dessert...famous coconut cake 6/19/2005

After going to a restaurant in town that we thought was average we decide to go to Peninsula Grill for dessert. (We had been there before for dinner and it was very good) It was 11 pm and they were very accommodating and sat us right away. We were able to order the coconut cake which is excellent. Pros: dessert, service, food Cons: crowded more
