Honest and Reliable - Simply the Best 2/25/2010

We have been satisfied customers of PDX automotive for 19 years now. Gerard and John have always treated us fairly and honestly, and stand behind their work 100%. They have expertly solved some very difficult problems with our cars over the years. A recent example: I had my car towed there one evening after it broke down. The next day I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had correctly diagnosed the problem, repaired my car, and had it ready for me that afternoon, all for a very fair and reasonable price. This is just one of many examples of the excellent customer service we have received from them. We would never consider bringing our cars elsewhere. Thank you, Gerard and John! Pros: Honesty and Excellent Customer Service more

The real deal 1/7/2010

I went out of my way to cross town because of the promise of integrity and mechanics with a conscience. As a single young woman who knows nothing about cars I am easy prey to take advantage of by mechanics, and unfortunately this is an industry that has developed a notorious reputation for that. The owner seems to take this reputation of integrity seriously and his customers recognize and appreciate it. While waiting I observed several people come in to pay their bills and all were happy and thankful to hand over their money, clearly pleased and grateful for the work. One woman I overheard saying to the owner ""I hope you know how much the community appreciates you guys."" The price was very reasonable for the amount of time and energy they put into my car. I'll be back and I highly recommend them. Pros: Integrity more

14 years of great service 12/14/2009

I have always appreciated John and Gerard's courteous and respectful natures, even when I would bring in junkie old cars that most people would laugh at. I have a nicer car now and I'm pleased to bring it to these guys. The work performed has always held up and I have always felt comfortable with their recomendations for service. Occasionaly, it hasn't needed anything serious even when I was expecting the worst. I trust them, which is important for me to be able to do. They have always answered my questions to my satisfaction. Pros: Located along my commute more

Overpriced and Dishonest 12/8/2009

I have to agree with the most recent reviews for PDX Automotive. They may have been exceptional at one time but my recent experience has been anything but pleasant. I have taken two cars there for repair and have spent over $2000 for two visits. After the last time, I questioned a $60 oil change and they had the nerve to tell me they have ""special heavy duty oil and filters"". I call BS! The oil used wasn't even synthetic. \r Finding a good, honest, and reasonable mechanic is difficult at best. Thank you for gouging me PDX Automotive, you lost a customer that was ready to be a lifetime customer. \r Pros: In Neighborhood Cons: Price, Communication, Honesty, Trust more

Horribly Overpriced Parts, Expensive Labor, Long Wait for Service 2/13/2009

This repair shop is good for diagnosis ONLY. As far as I know (and I know near nothing about cars) they haven't recommended that things be done when they don't need to be - but DO NOT have them do the work. I have only recently discovered how much they have been overcharging me for parts. For example: ignition module - $36.99 retail. Their price? $90. Alternator - $96 at another shop. PDX Auto? $160.\r \r If you get your car problems diagnosed there and you bring in your own parts their 1-year guarantee goes up in smoke. No guarantee.\r \r Their labor prices are not completely out of line but they are at the high end of the scale - $85 per hour (Feb 2009). However, they will not cut you a break on labor. If the estimate is 1.5 hours of labor and it takes them only 45 minutes, they will charge you for 1.5 hours.\r \r Also - if your car breaks down and you have it towed there for repairs it will usually take them several days before they get to it.\r \r I will never go there again. Pros: close to bus and max Cons: Overpriced. If you get an estimate from them, call around before you have them do work more

20 Years of GREAT Performance/Service 8/29/2007

After I moved to Portland, I got taken by several mechanics until I found PDX. Girard and Todd the owners have the best repair shop I have ever experienced. They are courteous, helpful and fix it right the first time. I have referred them to all my local family members and many friends who use them as well as strangers that ask me for a good shop because they too have been ripped off. If you use them, there is no way you will be disappointed. I have been their customer for so long, 20 years, give or take, and they have always been great. Thanks PDX more

Excellent Service! 2/16/2007

Just bought a used car and was looking for someone I could take the car to that is close to my home. Found PDX Automotive through Citysearch that thought to give them a try. Boy was it a good idea. Jon, the mechanic I dealt with, was extremely helpful and they were able to do a complete inspection of my used car for great price. I will definately be trusting these guys with my car's health from now on. more

Very Professional Customer Service 1/19/2007

I took my honda in for a standard 60,000 mile scheduled maintenance and the service was very quick and professional. It's really close to MAX / bus stops, which is convienient too. I arrived 10 minutes after they are supposed to open in the morning and actually pulled in right before the mechanic, but hey, who hasn't been there before, right? more

Best Shop in Town 12/18/2006

My 2001 Subaru Outback was making a horrible squeaking noise...it started out of the blue. Being short on cash, I put off taking it in for service. Soon after the squeaking, the brake light and battery light started blinking alternately when I would turn on my car. I finally called the shop to have it looked at.\r \r I was scared that it was going to end up being a power steering pump or some other god awful thing that would cost $600 dollars. John called me to say that a belt was loose..in fact, shredded and it would only be about $125 to fix it. The lights and squeaking was due to the fact that the belt for the alternator and the belt for the power steering hook to the same thing...so as the belt shredded up, the charge on the battery went down and the power steering started to give out.\r \r When I got to the shop I had the best suprise EVER! The mechanic had remembered that I had gotten a new alternator from PDX Automotive - IN FEBRUARY!!! I was going to mention it once I got to the shop, but John told me there was NO CHARGE before I could even get it out.\r \r These guys are great. They know cars and they know customer service. I have recommended them to a ton of friends. more

Good First Experience-Professional Service 12/1/2006

First time going to PDX Automotive. I am new to the area and found their info through Portland City Search. I took my Toyota pickup to them to have a new radiator and belts put in. In my dealings, I found them to be professional and competent.\r \r ? They called with an estimate before they began work\r ? More importantly, the estimate was accurate!\r ? They replaced parts that needed it and reused others that did not.\r ? My truck was finished in the time they quoted me.\r ? I found the prices to be fair. (I normally try to work on my vehicles myself and had already taken the time to price out most of the parts that were replaced.)\r ? They called to tell me when the truck was finished.\r \r I think the thing that impressed me most was that they took the time to clean all the connections on my battery and applied some anti corrosive spray. It probably took them an extra five minutes, but it speaks to the fact they might do more than what is required. \r \r I plan on using them again in the future. \r Pros: Conveniently Located to 60th Ave Max Line Cons: Not open on weekends more

Professional, honest and efficient. 10/26/2006

I brought in a used car I'd purchased that needed to have extensive work done. They were very upfront about repair cost before starting the work. They also explained what work needed immediate attention, and what could be put off for a while. Also they were very sensitive to my needs regarding getting my vehicle back as soon as possible. All my interactions with the employees were respectful and professional and everything I had repaired works perfectly. I am grateful to have found an honest mechanic. Pros: honest, competent and timely more

Honest and Reliable 9/8/2006

I have been going to Gerard - PDX Automotive - for over ten years because I know I can count on them to find the problem, fix it and not just add on extra charges for unneeded work. For example, once I thought I needed a new transmission and all he charged me was 25 cents for a cotter pin. Another time, Broadway Toyota told me I needed $2,000 worth of work on my car, but when I brought it to PDX Automotive, they were able to correct the problem for $700. PDX Automotive never gouges me or tells me that work is needed without first providing a complete diagnostic check on whatever system is in question on the car. Gerard always lets me know the potential needs my car may have in the near and distant future, and gives me my options about what I can try...always being clear upfront about costs and potential downsides. I count on PDX for reliable, consistant, professional and cost effective service and highly recommend this automotive garage to everyone. Pros: Reliable, honest, and fixes the problem Cons: Doesn't work weekends more

Expert, dependable auto repairs and excellent customer service 9/7/2006

I have been a satisfied customer of PDX Automotive for over 15 years. They have repaired a variety of cars for me and my family. We have found them to be unfailingly honest, conscientious and expert at troubleshooting difficult problems. A recent example of this is how they expertly and efficiently repaired the air conditioning on my venerable 1986 Buick Skyhawk (which I have owned since new) by tracing it to a bad connector at the firewall. This was not an easy problem to diagnose and repair. In conclusion, my family and I fully entrust the servicing of our vehicles to PDX Automotive, and we highly recommend them without reservation. Pros: honest, dependable, expert mechanics Cons: non whatsoever more

Dishonest and Incompetent 7/18/2006

PDX Automotive took 3 times to ""fix"" my car (I still don't trust that the same problem won't crop up again), charged us full price each time, even though they admitted by the 3rd time that they were idiots for misdiagnosing it the first two times, and refused to give us any sort of satisfactory resolution or refund - since each diagnosis and repair was slightly different, they claimed it wasn't covered under their 1 year warranty. Our car was out of comission for almost 4 weeks. I have come to the conclusion that they are either completetly dishonest, or totally incompetent. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to these guys. Pros: They are close to bus lines and the MAX Cons: Terrible Customer Service, High Prices, Incompetent Techs more
