Restaurant is closed - unused gift certificates 6/9/2008

Overtures was one of my favorite restaurants and I am truly sorry to see it close. Peter's meals were always excellent and the atmosphere was perfect. My wife and I would take advantage of Peter's yearly promotion of purchasing gift certificates at 50 % off for the coming year. The phone is disconnected and I can't finf any contact information to see how to redeem unused gift certificates. If anyone could provide contact info it would be appreciated. Email is working_4_dollars@yahoo Pros: Excellent food and atmosphere more

Overture's is NOT taking a vacation or closing it's doors! 2/12/2008

On behalf of Peter Lamlein and his staff, I would like to make it quite clear that Overtures Restaurant has no intentions of vacationing or closing any time soon. I dine there frequently, and know Peter very well. \r \r Regarding an earlier review, it seems there may have been a misunderstanding. more

Best BYO! 1/7/2008

Oh no, they'll be off for 6 mos!? I have to go there before they do that!!\r \r Overtures is the best byo - incidentally, La Viola is also very good - but man, from appetizer to entree, dessert, ambiance, price and service, this is one of my two favorite restaurants (the other is Vetri) in Philadelphia (including the likes of Le Bec Fin, Lacroix, and Fountain).\r \r I usually do the fixed menu but sometimes replace them here and there - among appetizers, their sweetbread is highly recommended if you like that stuff (not too impressed by the crab whiskey soup; the mushroom pastry was okay). For entrees, the veal and the lamb chop are EXCELLENT... and dessert - and I'm not usually a huge dessert person - their strawberry rhubarb pie, available in summer and early fall months, is to die for. Their apple tarte is also very, very good. Romantic, roomy, and excellent food and service - I was very happily surprised to find this gem of an establishment.\r \r PLEASE OPEN AGAIN :( Pros: Great food, very friendly service Cons: Really.. honestly.. none. If I really have to nitpick, might be considered a little dark, maybe? more

On Vacation? 12/19/2007

Heads up! The owner said he would be closing for six months, heading off to Germany. I was calling for a gift certificate and he was good enough to let me know. more

Fantastic Night Out! 8/12/2006

If you are like us and due to kids and work you value your ""date"" nights highly, I would suggest you visit Overtures. We dined there on Friday evening and had the most splendid time. Our experience all started when my wife called for reservations after reading reviews on this very site. She spoke to Peter the Chef/Owner who answered the phone. They proceed to have a ten minute conversation on what he was preparing and mapping out his suggestions for our dinner.\r \r So here is a review of the meal: My wife had the chilled cucumber soup. It was a puree of cucumber with dill and small chunks of shrimp. Just perfect for a summer evening. I had the crab cake. All crab with zero filler. I could have ordered several more and made them my meal it was that good!\r \r For the main course I had Australian lamb done perfectly at medium rare. My wife was more adventurous and tried the roast boar special. It was simply delicious. For desert we had white chocolate cheese cake and rum mango sorbet, our waiter brought a surprise sample of a German peach coogan the chief had made that evening. \r \r The restaurant is small in comparison to many in town, I counted roughly 14 tables. It is however a perfect place for a romantic, cozy evening get-a-way. I would suggest reservations to insure you have a table as most people dine and linger keeping turnover to a minimum.\r \r Our evening was capped off by a visit from Peter the chef/owner who brought with him his favorite after dinner cordial and three glasses. We talked food and life for the next hour. He is a remarkable host! \r \r Just a note, parking can be tricky on the weekends as Overtures is just off South St. There is a lot behind the restaurant that is open 24 hours and is suggested as the meters only allow for two hour parking. I promise you will be there longer than two hours. \r \r We recommend Overtures for anyone looking for great food and a romantic intimate atmosphere.\r \r G & N more

The best place that I have been in a long, long time. Food and service not to mention the atmosphere was great. more

A top bang for the buck 12/19/2002

On Tues-Thurs, you can get a very good 3 course dinner for $20. For those posts regarding the hostess, she's from Spain and the spanish are a bit more gregarious that us Americans. The room is very nice, they always have the best flowers in the bar area, makes a wonderful impression upon entering. My wife and I go there at least twice a month and we've never had a bad meal. Highly recommended not only because of food, but due to value. Furthermore, the waiter, Keith, is extremely pleasant, although sometimes a bit slow due to the number of tables he covers (I think it's just him for the entire restaurant plus the hostess). So sit back, bring a great bottle of wine and enjoy the atmosphere, the food is worth the wait. Finally, we usually don't even have to make reservations on the weekdays, a real plus. more

Wonderful food and service 7/23/2002

This is a romantic place where you always feel welcome. The waiters are knowledgable, friendly, and not overbearing. Food is consistently topnotch and the mid-week fixed price menu is an absolute bargain. More classic than nouvelle, but new combos in treatment of standards and wonderful soups round out the offerings every time. Not for kids unless they are taking Mom and Dad out. Pros: food, atmosphere, service more

best value 6/21/2002

A full dinner for $20.02? Believe it. Cucumber soup, duck confit , dessert and coffee for $20.02. My wife was thrilled with her dinner also- snails with a morrocan sauce and shrimp scampi- delicious. The total bill was $46.55. A deal - especially at a fine restaurant with lovely decor and a good waitstaff. You really can splurge on a fine wine to bring here. I can't believe I missed this place all these years. This visit will be the first of many. more
