Editorial
  • Otoro has the bad luck of being a couple of blocks away from two sushi restaurants, Sebo and Domo, both which are worth driving across town for. In the inevitable comparisons, Otoro comes up short (as would 95 percent of SF's sushi joints) but if those two heavyweights weren't lurking nearby, this could be the neighborhood's go-to sushi spot. The slate-gray and sea-blue space is small but not cramped, and the friendly staff--if you've been looking for a sushi chef with a solid slapstick routine, look no further--move swiftly. The restaurants namesake, Otoro (fatty tuna) is the specialty and by far the most expensive fish; most two-piece sushis are $5-6, about as low it goes in this city for quality fish, which it is. There's also ramen, a long list of yakitori and a standard sake selection: nothing that's going to put this place in the 95th percentile, but if you're looking for a fun spot to grab some good sushi without spending a fortune, Otoro will do just fine.
