Old Town Trolley a complete bummer. 10/3/2006

My wife and I are travel agents in Atlanta and because of the closeness of these 2 cities, we make the trip often and because of our work, make a point to truly try different things for a first hand perspective. We've traveled to Savannah for years and we've watched the place grow and change and not always for the better & especially when it comes to tourism. There's a saying, ""don't believe the hype""? Well, Old Town Trolley fits the cliche. When your marketing feels ""too good to be true"", well it probably is. As travel authorities, we tend to see such ""kiddie"" looking tours as the cheapie experience for the masses. But in the name of getting some true opinion, we took a leap of faith and in the end it felt more like a plunge and the place was a dive. Cheap wasn't it either. I wouldn't mind spending the money for these tours if they were worth the price but they simply weren't. We bought tickets for both their history tour and their ghost tour. Both ended up feeling like scripted, canned experiences and when asking around, we were told that in a way, they're supposed to be. The guides were a combination of bad actors and amateur drivers at best. They felt untrained and pushed to just get us back to the trolley stop on time so they could load on the next hoard of ""suckers."" My wife and I have been all over the world and often what we find in consumerism is a business concept & rule that ""if they don't know the difference, they'll never know what they're missing."" In my opinion this is unacceptable. There are some of us who know there is a better way or a higher standard of doing things. Dare we say that this is based on 'history'. My opinion after trying out Old Town Trolley's tour is that they do their best to flood the market with information as to ensure that you never know the difference between great and average. Its an unfortunate trend in beloved Savannah. Cons: Just about everyone you could come up with. more

As good as the rest 6/28/2006

I took the trolley tour and it was so convenient. They give you a place to park and tell you where to go and what to see. The on/ off idea is a good concept, if you're in a rush for time take the 90 minute circle, it is sufficient information. I would tell you though that all the rates for all the trolleys are different and there are those that are cheaper, so if you want to save the money take a different one, they all have the same concept. Also, we did the ghost tour, it was fun, however if you are able, take a walking tour, they will also save you some money. Savannah is very expensive. It is easy to spent alot of money very quickly. Also, have reservations for your lodging. When we left for Savannah everyone had availability, we waited till we got there and then had a hard time finding somewhere to stay, when we did, it was a good distance away from downtown and cost a fortune for a regular hotel. Do... eat at the Pirates House... it is inexpensive, the food is great.. and it really is haunted! Pros: its convenient and informative Cons: crowded, hot, and one of the bathroom facilities at a stopping point (not in connection with the trolley system) was extremely awful..it didn't have sinks!!! that is just nasty! more

So So Tour 3/6/2006

The tour guide tried to make everything a joke on the tour, which was really corny. I guess they also think whites aren't interested in black history. No mention on the tour that slaves made all the bricks the old buildings are made of, including the old forts in the city. more
