Great place for a night out!!! 3/22/2009

My girlfriend and I recently dined at the Old Oyster Factory on Hilton Head and had a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived we had a good feeling about the place. Despite being early in the spring season on a Tuesday night the place was still quite busy. We were sat at a table in the bar area by a friendly hostess and had prompt and helpful service from our server Bob. We snacked on their delicious hushpuppies while we enjoyed a cocktail. My girlfriend, who rarely eats seafood, really enjoyed their ""signature"" tilapia dish and I loved their special tuna. Our table on the window overlooked the water as the sun went down. You couldn't ask for a better view. For dessert we finished up with marscapone in a candied almond dish recommended by Bob and it was great. The whole experience was perfect from the food, the staff and escpecially the views. We are certain to return. Pros: Service, sunset views, hushpuppies more

Great setting, food very good vs. average. 10/7/2008

We tried to visit the Old Oyster Factory while on vacation in August, and couldn't even get into the parking lot, so on this October timeshare week, we made reservations through our concierge desk. We were happy to be given a lovely seat next to the windows. Had it not been cloudy, the sunset would have been phenomenal! Service was prompt and swift. No time to linger! Three of us had the special caprese salad with lovely ripe tomatoes interspersed with mozarella and onion slices, and drizzled with a basil dressing. It was excellent. My husband had the oysters Moscovite and said they were very tasty. I took pictures because everything looked lovely. A tilapia special was great, according to hubby. The garnish of the food on the plate was pretty to look at and excellent. Our friends liked the pasta with scallops and shrimp. The basket of hush puppies were great. They have some standard wines, which we ordered, as well as cellar selections which offered something more special. Now, I am NOT a seafood lover and have been trying to get away from my usual filet. So, I ordered ""lump"" crabcakes. Being from Maryland, I do love crabcakes. These were good, but certainly NOT lump as advertised. And I would bet my sinking 403B the mashed potatoes were instant. So, all those good things, I am sorry to say, were offset by a very mediocre plate sitting in front of me. What a shame. Go for the sunset. Pros: caprese salad, oysters moscovite, the view Cons: instand mashed potatoes, no lump in the lump crabcakes more

Old Oyster Factory 9/26/2008

What a great place! We were recommended by our hotel to come check out the Oyster Factory. After traveling for 15 hours we were tired and cranky, when we arrived at the restaurant we were blown away. What a view, this place is so relaxing overlooking the marsh. The wine list was so extensive, it was a treat to have so many choices. Our dinners were fabulous and our server was more than accomidating with our two small children. This was the perfect end to our long day. The server also suggested that we try both of there sister retaurants Red Fish and Alexanders. Red Fish was another WOW! When you walk in the door, you are immediately surrounded by wine, they have over 1200 bottles to choose from. Our server was so knowledgeable, and more than willing to help us make the right decisions. The Seabass and Scallops were amazing. We couldn't have asked for a better experience from either place. We are going to Alexanders later in the week and are very excited. We highly recommend all of these restaurants. more

Great food and service! 9/23/2008

Great restaurant! It was recomended to us through the hotel we were staying at and we're so glad we went! We had an excellent dinner and their wine list was extensive. So many times you go into a restaurant and the wine list is pretty limited as to what they serve by the glass. Here there was a great selection so my husband and I had no trouble finding something we liked, as we have different tastes. Our server was very knowledgeable and helped me select a wine that I hadn't tried before and it was great. The seafood was was excellent, oysters were freshly shucked, and we loved those little hushpuppies! I will also add that another of this same companie's restaurants was recommended to us. It is called Red Fish. We thought we would try it as Red Fish also has a wine shop where you can pick your wine out and bring it to the table. We went the next night and weren't disappointed. Red Fish has more of a carribean flair to the menu. I had a local fish, mahi mahi with a mango advocado salsa which was delicious .Great fresh seafood, contemporary decore, very friendly knowledgeable staff. We had two great dining experiences on Hilton Head. Pros: food, view, service more

Great seafood and view 6/26/2008

I was in from out of town and the restaurent was suggested by hotel. This is a big place and it gets very busy, but I sat at the bar and the service was very good. Tried the oysters and escargot suggested by bar tender and they were both very good. Then I had the Broiled Sea Scallops that were tasty with good texture. The view is good if you like rivers at low tide. A little pricey but good food and service. Pros: Food and service. Cons: A little pricey and I am not a fan of rvier view at low tide. more

Great food and atmosphere 10/31/2007

First, the atmosphere is wonderful with beautiful views over Broad Creek. The menu has something for everyone, and the wine selection is spectacular. We sampled several appetizers, including oysters and shrimp. For our meals, we had scallops, and a large cut filet. For desert, we shared a marscapone suffle. Everything was cooked absolutely perfect with lots of flavor. The service was great, and even though it was busy, our server took great care of us. This fine-dining restaurant is a great place for families to check out while in Hlton Head. more

Best Restaurant in Hilton Head 6/6/2007

We were on our honeymoon in June 2007. We wanted some great seafood, nothing formal, for our last night. The food was outstanding. We had oysters, crab cake, grilled shrimp, and shared a 1.5 lb lobster. It was SO good. We visited Savannah, Charleston and Hilton Head and this was by far the best restaurant experience we had in those three cities. And...the service was perfect. Not stuffy or pushy, but very friendly , yet attentive. In 10 days, this was the only the 2nd restaurant to aknowledge our honeymoon, and they made the best of it. It is a ""must eat"" for anyone travelling to Hilton Head. Just a bit harder to find than some places, but it makes it seem like you're part of the city, not at some tourist trap or mall. Fantastic! Pros: Food, service, view. Great experience. No complaints at all. Cons: The map we had was backwards. From Matthew's road, you make a right, not a left. more

Good food, long wait, OK Service. 6/29/2006

We went on a Tuesday night in June around 6:45. We waited for 1 1/2 hours to be seated. The wait was not bad because there was a back deck overlooking the river with live entertainment and a place for kids to play and throw rocks into the water. Once we were seated we ordered drinks (1st bad thing no sweet tea and for a southern girl that was bad), an appetizer, soup and our main course. The food was really good (all of it) but the appetizer and soup came out together and then 3 minutes later our main course came. Needless to say we were rushed to eat it all, so that it did not get cold so that was annoying. So all in all we enjoyed it. Definite tourist restaurant but good food. We might try it again off season. more

Great view and decent seafood 5/21/2005

Factory it certainly still is. Very large operation but decent seafood is available, especially the oysters. You might consider the cold seafood combination of oysters, mussels, clams, ½ lobster and more, but you better be hungry to finish it as it is quite large. Daily specials offer the local seafood, regular menu is kind of ordinary. Good view from many tables, nice bar area while you wait. Lots of parking with attendent to help you find a space. Pros: view, bar, oysters more

Good...not great 6/27/2003

This isn't the best food on the island, but the ambience is great and it's a casual atmosphere which is always good for groups or families. Pros: View, Ambience, Oysters of course Cons: All food not great, long wait more
